Yoga

The classes are definitely a lot harder than they look. I take yoga and pilates. I find the yoga harder to do because it requires a lot of concentration and focus. You have to maintain balance, the correct breathing cadence but at the same time your heart rate goes up from exertion. A quick test is breathing in through your nose for a count of ten then out through your mouth for another count of ten. I really have a lo of respect for any man that takes these classes. And even more for the ones that come back. Pilates is more intense but if you like to physically push yoursef, its not as difficult. I come from a ballet background so a lot of it is second nature to me.

Ive just recently started studying Capoeira and let me tell you, ive never pushed myself so hard. To the point that I pulled my hamstring learning jenga, the basic stance.

In other words, dannyboy, you absolutely nothing to lose and a lot to gain by adding yoga or even pilates to your routine. The stretching will elongate your muscles giving you a leaner look. Personally I like that look better than stacked and cut up. OMG, like Ryan Reynolds in Blade Trinity....now THAT is a perfect body!

nice, have you ever taken a class before?

My friend takes it at least twice a week... plays lacrosse, but does this for the chicks. Anyway - he's been it for two months and has gone from 215 to 200lbs already. Problem with that however is that he is not properly preparing for such routines... for example loading up on carbs... so some of that weight has been muscle loss too.

Someone explain to me the benefits of yoga.

Don't say for stretching muscles, b/c that is something that can be done in 10 minutes before a workout.

If you say it is for relaxation, that is fine. Everyone has their own way of relaxaing.

But, lets strickly talk about the health and fitness beneifits of it. Lets assume a person has a typical schedule. Has very limited time and at the most has 1 hour 3 to 5 times per week to do some type of workout.

Would you suggest Yoga, if so, explain why.

Now, if you have plenty time to train with weights, for cardio, and for life in general, I am not concerned with your response. Let's speak of reality, for those people who have very little time to concentrate on their health. Should Yoga play a part in this and why?

Also, any studies relating yoga to health would be nice as well.

find me a dude who puts in the time and energy in the gym looking for that look..... if you do, i will buy you a tricked out red ferrari for new years......

chances are, if you saw a dude looking like that, trust me, it wasn't intentional...... and if there's any guy in here who has ended up with that 'leaner look'..watch them ditch those yoga and pilates classes....

And as far as stretching the muscles for the "leaner" look. While, it may stretch the muscles to allow for more growth, it will not make them longer. Muscles have a set distance between which they can grow. They are not made longer.

I will point out one example for you. Flex wheeler. He could strecth and bend as far as any yoga "specialist" and if you have ever seen him you would know the "lean look" he was not.

And before all of you Yoga lovers jump my ass. I am not degrading Yoga the least bit, just like I do not degrade people who like going shopping, or people who relax by riding their motorbikes. I am just trying to figure out how Yoga fits into a health and fitness lifestyle anymore than what I have just mentioned.

With Yoga, the main objective is a mind/body/spirit connection. I guess you can kind of compare it to Tai Chi. It deals with infusing concentration, awareness and mental control with physical exercise. For someone that is hard pressed for time and just wants to "get big" then I wouldn't reccomend it. Yoga has a philosophy that extends to everyday life, not just the gym.

On the physical side, have you seen Madonna lately? She no longer does weight training last I heard, she only does Ashtanga Yoga. Core strength is key - it affects the way you walk, the way you sit, etc.

If you go to the gym to get big, get cut, get freakishly strong or to get chicks then yoga isn't for you. I'm too lazy to look for any articles on how yoga is directly related to health but I know from personal experience that ending my workout with a yoga class leaves me feeling much more fulfilled. It brings my heart rate down, increases my concentration and helps me sleep tremendously. I've not only exhausted my body, but my mind as well.

Everyone has different things that they expect from their workout. You have to make your own decision about what would benefit your health based on your goals.

No I dont go to the gym to get freaky and big. And what you mentioned about Yoga is correct (except for the fact that Madona looks so good b/c of it) but at times it appears that some think it can be substituted for weight training or cardio.

I knew the answer before I asked, I just wanted to see what the reply would be.
