Basic Operations [sirus/ericOperational/focus]

Basic Operations began in 2001 when Nathan Hayes(sirus) & Eric Knight met at a local drum and bass night Nathan was Djing in around southeast North Carolina. They chatted a bit after Nathan's set and found out they shared similar tastes in music. Nathan had been working on production for a few months prior and invited Eric to a studio session to see if their tastes would work well in music production. After several sessions, the guys had finished four or five solid tunes and immediately sent them off for dubplate to see how the dancefloors would receive them. The reactions were nothing short of excellent and they decided to continue working on tunes to see where it went. After a month or so of solid studio work, Nathan suggested they come up with an alias for their work and Basic Operations was born.

They began the process of networking with labels and getting as many tunes as they could to major DJ's. After receiving much positive feedback from several labels, they signed "Micasa sucasa" to North Carolina based, Nemcron Records. The song was well taken and got play by some major hitters including Bailey, C4C and Klute. They continued for months sending out demos, talking to producers about music making tips, listening to old records and building a solid collection of samples. Nathan collaborated with djknick from Evol Intent Records in Atlanta, Ga. at this time that resulted in "Fiction"; a hard fast-paced stormer that was also quickly picked up by Nemcron Records to be released on their third release with a Loxy&Ink tune on the flipside. After about a solid year of work the boys mailed off promo packages to several large labels on their way to Miami in March of 2003. While on vacation they received word that Total Science was interested in signing several tunes for their various labels. Nathan and Eric were quick to respond and 3 songs were signed. A track on the Advanced Recordings series: Sektor 6, and also a 12" on the Fix sublabel. This immediately caused a buzz and within the next 3 months songs and remixes were signed to the Mathematics forthcoming Social Studies imprint, Midnight Sun Recordings, Blindside Recordings and during the summer of 2003 signed the massive "White" track to Dylan's Freak Recordings label. This launched the boys into the forefront and their tunes were in rotation by many of the top producers & Dj's in the industry including, Fabio,Flight,Marcus Intalex,Pendulum,Bkey,Dieselboy,Dara,Insiders,Kemal,

Mathematics,Black Sun Empire,Total Science,Juju,Karl K/Jaeson Kennedy/Kaos and many others...

With a slew of people requesting tracks, more time was focused back into the studio and more tunes were signed to labels including, Circle Recordings headed by Kevin Gimble, Phuturo Recordings from San Francisco and a special request was made by the man himself, Dieselboy for a remix of Karl K,Jae K & Kaos' "Studio 54" track for his Human Records imprint; and most recently, a collaborative song with good friend Wes Dixon, "Can't take it" was signed to Renegade Recordings for the Renegade Rollers EP 4. The ball was rolling and with all the business, bookings, and the rest of their lives eating away at the schedule Kevin Jekel(DJ focus) a long time friend, accomplished DJ and business promoter, offered his help with the business side of things so the guys could keep their heads attached and in the studio. Now freeing up their time, Nathan & Eric are working on forming a label to showcase not only their own talent but the talent of fresh producers around the world. Their is also an Indie Album in the works through kevin's forthcoming label project, which will be an exclusive CD mix of Basic Operations tracks with 4 bonus tracks not limiting to drum and bass but showcasing their abilities in hip hop, downbeat and deep house, all including guest appearances by MC's and vocalists. 2004 see's a summer tour and later the release of their album. Who knows what the future will bring for these guys, but for now it's looking very bright.
