"On the other side of the trendy tapas restaurant, Bakus, on Durham's Ninth Street, resides a club with a hip New York feel. Simply called 9, this space is complete with a bar, an overhead DJ booth and a colorful avant-garde, almost mod look. Adrian Taylor, who owns both Bakus and 9, wanted this to be a place that hosts an ever-changing kaleidoscope of live performances including jazz, blues, Latin, ska, rock, Indian and European beats ... After midnight on the weekends ...

Because 9 is one of the few places around that stays open afterhours, it draws the late-night crowd, which means sometimes this place doesn't even get busy until around 1AM or so. On a warm night, take the action out on the back deck shared with Bakus. Another perk 9's affiliation with Bakus? You can order Bakus' wonderfully tasty sangria, but watch out: Its strength is deceiving and you may want to have the number of a cab company handy." -- Erica Hinton
