There’s a host of reasons why François K demands respect. He runs a great record label, Wave Music; he’s a fabulous DJ, unconstrained by genre; and he’s a brilliant producer, with 1995’s FK-EP sitting high in the canon of tech-house classics. But there’s something else about the veteran that sets him apart, and that’s simple longevity. He began his nightlife career as a drummer at Galaxy 21 in the mid-’70s, and soon after started spinning and producing (his very first mixing job was for Musique’s 1978 hit“In the Bush”); the following three-and -a-half decades haven’t slowed him down a bit. For instance, we’ll bet the disco the that there aren’t many 56-year-olds who could handle the stress of running and spinning at a weekly party—but Mr. K has had the energy to do his Monday-night Cielo soiree, Deep Space, for a full seven years now.

François & Co. are marking the shindig’s birthday this Monday, and they’re not slacking in the special-guest department; in fact, the party is bringing in another of the world’s most respected clubland kings, Theo Parrish. The influential Detroit producer and DJ, considered a deity among certain beard-stroking circles, is a lot like his host in one respect: His sets tend to be go-for-broke affairs, veering from vintage soul to acid house to funky disco, imbued with a risk-taking joy that befits the night’s celebratory status.—Bruce Tantum
