The Mid, Swing Shift & React Presents Mayhem The Mid Friday, June 3, 2011 9PM - 4AM Featuring: Cajmere Paul Johnson Terry Mullan John BID Simmons Cajmere : Green Velvet, initially created by house don Cajmere (AKA Curtis Alan Jones) as an outlet for his non-vocal productions and frequent DJing gigs, grew to become even more popular than the man himself, thanks to club singles like "Preacher Man," "Answering Machine" and "The Stalker." Each were infectious, undeniably fun records with simple vocal taglines and a wonderful sense of humor. Jones, who had nurtured the Chicago house renaissance of the 1990's with his Cajual Records, gained immense success in 1993 with the Cajmere single "Brighter Days" (with vocals performed by Dajaé). Later that year, he formed the sub-label Relief Records mostly for instrumental tracks by himself and others. Besides releases from DJ Sneak, Gemini and Paul Johnson, Green Velvet figured on many of the early Relief singles, including its first, "Preacher Man" as well as "Flash" (also released on the British label Open), "The Stalker" and 1997's hilarious "Answering Machine." Jones began to do supplement his Green Velvet DJing schedule with quasi-live gigs as well, and released his first LP in 1999. His self-titled release on F-111 one year later compiled a dozen of his earlier club hits, and the proper sophomore production album "Whatever" appeared in 2001 on his own Relief label. Change has been a constant theme throughout the successful career of Green Velvet, but as he has crossed genres, explored themes from the comedic to the serious and changed monikers, the common thread running through the music he has made for nearly two decades is its roots in and dedication to the Chicago House sound. Paul Johnson Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, the birthplace of house music, Paul Johnson, started making waves in the music community at the early age of thirteen. In the summer of 1984, Paul Johnson taught himself how to spin after watching his cousin Marc spin and scratch in his bedroom. As a self taught artist, Paul's pulsating energy and passion are apparent in all his work. In high school while his peers were holding down after school jobs, Paul was a popular radio DJ. Raw talent, dedication and a deep love for house music have made Paul Johnson one of the most sought after DJ's in the world. Paul Johnson's musical resume is both extensive and impressive; he released his first record in 1990 titled, "Overload" on Dance Mania Records. During this time, Paul quickly made a name for himself as a producer, responsible for many of the now famous DJ/Producers that we all know and love. Paul's innovative and inspiring production work gained industry recognition as the go to guy. Paul has released over 200 E.P's himself as well as a vast amount of music for some of the most consistently underground dance labels, all prior to signing with Peacefrog Records. Paul also boasts 12" releases on the likes of Cajual / Relief and Dance Mania which led to his debut album release, "Bump Talkin", in 1994. "Bump Talkin" and the follow up release, "Feel The Music", became two of the most talked about releases of their time. Music: Electro
