Child murderer jailed for life

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 Posted: 12:01 PM EDT (1601 GMT)

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- A Belgium court has sentenced convicted murderer and child rapist Marc Dutroux to life imprisonment.

Tuesday's sentencing ends a 3 1/2-month trial and a case that has haunted Belgium for nearly a decade.

Dutroux, 47, was convicted on Thursday along with his former wife and another co-defendant of kidnapping and repeatedly raping six girls during the mid-1990s.

He was also found guilty of murdering two of four girls who died after being sexually assaulted and tortured as captives in his house.

His ex-wife, Michele Martin, was sentenced to 30 years in jail.

On Thursday, she was convicted of allowing two 8-year-old girls to starve to death in a basement cell at her home, as well as involvement in the abductions. (Full story)

Another accomplice, Michel Lelievre, was sentenced to 25 years for helping in the kidnapping and imprisonment of the girls, and for drug trafficking.

The fourth defendant, businessman Michel Nihoul, was convicted for trafficking drugs and people into Belgium but was acquitted of involvement in the abductions.

Dutroux's arrest in 1996 provoked widespread national soul-searching amid fears that the country could be harboring one or more major pedophile networks with links to the upper echelons of Belgian life.

Hundreds of thousands of people marched to protest slow and inept handling of the case, and millions signed a petition opposing the early release of convicted sex offenders.

The case was directly responsible for improvements in child protection laws in Belgium and reforms of the judiciary and police -- Dutroux's brief escape from jail in 1998 prompted the resignation of the Belgian justice and interior ministers as well as the chief of the state police force.

A parliamentary inquiry conducted in the late 1990s found that Belgian police ineptly investigated the small gang of offenders and that the deaths might have been prevented had the police done a better job.

Police searched Dutroux's home at one point but failed to find the basement prison. In another instance, upon investigating sounds from the house, police failed to search it because Dutroux -- already a convicted child offender -- told them the sounds were children on the street.

Dutroux was out on parole at the time of the crimes after serving a prison sentence for raping young girls in the 1980s

Saleen seems to have an unusual interest in pedophiles, eh?

As creepy as this guy is (and he *is* creepy - those Belgian people are a little off...) there's much more rampant pedophilia in the United States, especially in the southern states.

Heck, Americans are running out to other countries to get their fix:

And they're re-released into the population all the time, hence all the controversy regarding having a pedophile as your neighbor and forcing them to be 'registered'. I mean, what would you do, Saleen, if your neighbor turned out to be some child-molesting murderer? You'd probably kill the guy. Yet they let 'em out all the time.

That Belgian freak won't last in a european prison for very long, don't worry; there's not a lot of tolerance for that sort of crime.

even funnier is how he has repeatedly stated he's roman catholic and defends right wing religious views, although the bible clearly says "thou shall not kill" (it doesn's state thou shall not kill, except in extreme circumstances). If he were such a christian, he would believe that after allowing this guy to die in prison he would be appropiately judged and punished.

Foul!! Five yard penalty.

Opposing our guido element is encouraged, but not by stooping to their level.
