Love Parade or Not

July 13, 2004 - Berlin -There’s little love to be had in Berlin this summer. The Love Parade, a giant fiesta of techno music that has streamed its way through Berlin’s streets, drawing partiers from around the world every summer for over 13 years, will not be held here this year. Started in 1989 shortly before the fall of the wall by Berlin DJ Dr. Motte, the parade was originally conceived as a “house music demonstrationâ€, but was made political advocating respect, tolerance and understanding between nations. His theory being “music… speaks in thousands of languages and is understood by all.†With their stamped certificate of political demonstration status the Love Parade had received financial and logistical support from the German Government until 2001, when the plug was finally pulled on the political status and resulting subsidized support of the event. From its early days on West Berlin’s shopping boulevard the Ku’Damm with one truck and 150 participants, the parade had eventually grown into an unwieldy street party, hosting over a million ravers dancing to the beats radiating from 50 trucks.

This event, once geared at a small, underground music scene, had evolved into a swarming mass of mainstream techno-pop, its blatant commercialism no longer quite fitting the requirements of the ever-popular Berlin pastime – waging political demonstrations. So, despite the generous corporate support from Samsung, the organizers just couldn’t swing the clean up costs sans-subsidy this year and called a halt to Berlin’s traditional party event of the summer. But never fear! For like in a video game when one soldier is struck down a new one pops up to take its place, the lean, mean F*ck Parade has come to take over where the Love Parade has stumbled in its own ungainly tracks.
