VOLUNTEER NEEDS

Volunteers are being actively recruited and trained to assist with shelter operations and local phone banks. Call (954) 797-3847 for more information.

THERE IS STILL TIME TO PREPARE

· Prepare a Personal Evacuation Plan

Identify ahead of time where you could go if you are told to evacuate. Choose several places--a friend's home in another town, a motel or a shelter. Get a good map and be familiar with your community's evacuation routes. Listen to local media broadcasts or NOAA Weather Radio for the latest storm conditions. If advised to evacuate, do so immediately. In case you have to evacuate to a Red Cross shelter, be sure to bring medications, extra clothing, pillows and blankets and other hygiene and comfort supplies for all members of your family. Be sure to also make advance preparations for your pets, which aren't allowed in Red Cross shelters.

· Assemble a Family Disaster Supplies Kit

Have emergency supplies set aside for all members of your household, including emergency medications, non-perishable food and a non-electric can opener, bottled water (at least three gallons per person), a battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries, extra clothes, important documents, cash and credit cards, a first aid kit and other special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members and pets.

· Prepare for High Winds

Make trees more wind resistant by removing diseased and damaged limbs, then strategically removing branches so that wind can blow through. Install permanent shutters on your windows and add protection to the outside areas of sliding glass doors. Strengthen garage doors and unreinforced masonry. Move or secure lawn furniture, outdoor decorations or ornaments, trash cans, hanging plants and anything else that can be picked up by wind and become a projectile.

Evacuation Zones

Zone A (Red Zone) – Miami Beach, Virginia Key, Key Biscayne and all islands lying within Biscayne Bay including the municipalities of Golden Beach, Sunny Isles Beach, Bal Harbor, Bay Harbor Islands, Indian Creek Village, Surfside, North Bay Village, City of Miami Beach and the island portions of the City of Miami. (Note: That area west of the L-31N levee known as the 8 ½ Square Mile Area is ordered to evacuate because of its inaccessibility to rescue vehicles following a major storm.)

Zone B (Yellow Zone) – All areas of mainland Miami-Dade County lying (north to south) east of Biscayne Boulevard, Brickell Avenue, S. Miami Avenue, South Bayshore Drive, Main Highway, Ingraham Highway, Old Cutler Road, the Florida Turnpike south to U.S. 1 to State Road 9336 [sW 344 Street (Palm Drive), SW 192 Avenue (Tower Road) and Ingram Highway] south to Everglades National Park. The only exception to this pattern is a small area east of Old Cutler Road, west of SW 67 Avenue and north of SW 152 Street that is not in the evacuation zone.

Zone C (Green Zone) – The area of Miami-Dade County west of Zone B and a line defined by SW 152 Street (Coral Reef Drive) at Old Cutler Road going west to U.S. 1, then south to SW 184 Street (Eureka Drive), then west to SW 127 Avenue (Burr Road), then south to U.S. 1 to SW 312 Street (Campbell Drive or Homestead’s NW 8 Street), then west to Everglades National Park.

Beginning at 4 p.m. today, the American Red Cross will open six shelters throughout Miami-Dade County for people evacuated from areas at highest risk from Hurricane Frances.

''Six shelters were determined that that's what was needed right now,'' said Annette Barket, senior spokeswoman for the agency's local chapter.

Miami-Dade County officials stress that the shelters should be a last resort. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay with friends and family outside of the evacuation zones.

The following Hurricane Evacuation Centers are opening today:

• Charles Drew Middle School, 1801 NW 60th St., Miami.

• North Miami Beach Senior, 1247 NE 167th St., North Miami Beach.

• Barbara Goleman Senior, 14100 NW 89th Ave.. Miami Lakes.

• Booker T. Washington Senior, 1200 NW Sixth Ave., Miami.

• Robert C. Morgan Senior, 18180 SW 122nd Ave., Miami

• South Miami Senior, 6856 SW 53rd St., Miami.

Families and individuals should bring basic emergency and personal items such as pillows and bedding, essential medications and other health-related items, extra clothing, and a toy or activity for children.

Pets, alcohol and firearms are not allowed.

For further information, contact the American Red Cross hotline number at 1-866-GET-INFO, or the Miami-Dade Information Center at 305-468-5900.
