Chirac lashes out against US "cultural domination"

French President Jacques Chirac warned Thursday of a "catastrophe" for global diversity if the United States' cultural hegemony goes unchallenged.

Speaking at a French cultural center in Hanoi ahead of Friday's opening of a summit of European and Asian leaders, Chirac said France was right to stand up for cultural and linguistic diversity.

The outspoken French president warned that the world's different cultures could be "choked" by US values.

This, he said, would lead to a "general world sub-culture" based around the English language, which would be "a real ecological catastrophe".

Citing Hollywood's stranglehold over the film industry as an example, Chirac stressed that only with government assistance could countries maintain their cultural heritage.

Vietnam is a former French colony, but only around 375,000 of its 81 million people speak French. English is considered by most people a far more valuable and practical second language, particularly among businessmen.

Not for nothing, but it all comes from a deep-rooted jealousy stretching back to the 19th Century when France was in the same position as the US is now, as a dominant world power. Now that they are second fiddle, all they can do is bitch and moan.

Most French people I know could give two shits about the spread of French culture and ideas. Same for most American people.

What it comes down to in culture marketing is who has the most money.

last year, the french were banning english terms such a email so people would only use the french words...

btw, france was never a world power. they are the most conquered contry on the planet. Their socialist views is what spurred Powell to call them "old europe"

btw, france was never a world power

once again uneducated jibberish. France was above England in econmic strength and in the late 19th century French was the international language of Diplomacy. France's Belle epoque gave way to technological and scientific progress (remember Pierre and Marie Curie or Pasteur ?). France was very powerful in one point in time. They still cling on to that old diluted distant past, it's really sad much like Falteen.

My Dad was a child during WWii. He would always kick the football (soccer) when he was a child with his next door neighbor. Each afternoon they'd have tea and kick the ball around religiously. One day, his neighbor's mother called them into their house but for some weird reason, my Father politely declined her invitation and kicked the ball up against a wall. He looked up and remembers thinking, "Those are our boys going to fight the Germans." When he saw the little black dots falling underneath the planes, he realized it wasn't his "boys" and stood there shocked. He started running and all of a sudden, BOOM!, a bomb went through the neighbor's house and killed his friend and the family. My Dad had to be rescued out of the rubble and was in the hospital for six months. So yeah, I despise the French for the consistent, ungrateful behavior toward the rest of the Allies.
