Florida passes Stand Your Ground bill

Lawmakers in the US state of Florida have passed a bill that would allow a gun owner to shoot an attacker on the street in self-defence.

Under what its Republican sponsor calls the Stand Your Ground bill, gun licence holders over 21 years of age who feel threatened in public can shoot to protect themselves, without trying to escape first.

Florida Governor Jeb Bush says the bill is a good anti-crime measure.

Critics say it will boost gun sales and turn the state into something resembling the wild west.

The hype surrounding this bill has been amazing. The last time the media predicted that Florida would become the "Wild West" was back when the state adopted its current concealed carry law. Guess what? Violent crime rates went down.

i think this is so funny how people are getting upset about this. nothing is going to change. it wasnt legal to strike someone without provacation then, and it still isnt. you cant just go hit someone you dont like and it will be acceptable. all this means is you dont have to attempt to flee first. think about what happens if there is an attack, its one party's word against another afterward, and any witnesses corroborate either side in court. thats still the case with the law change. its no different. if there are no witnesses to an attack than its one word against another, but thats also exactly the situation before the law change.

The first thing the Germans and Italians did was disarm the general population.

You'd think you'd have our boy from Holland on our side too, all things considered. The last time the US was invaded (aside from the Attu Island incursion in 1942) was almost 200 years ago, and people here still try to keep that in mind when it comes to arms.

The last time Ar's land was invaded was a little over 50 years ago, with hundreds of thousands of his people injured or killed. Odd how quickly they forget the past.

Invasions aside, it is a dangerous world out there. I have no real desire to shoot anyone (well, if I saw Bin Laden, you bet your ass he'd go down...), but there's people out there with the desire to shoot me. Not me in particular, but people out there who might take a shot at me because they like my watch a little too much, or the car I was driving if I had one. I'd like to know I have the ability to respond in kind.

That being said, statisically, violent crime is way down these years. Compared to the society of a hundred years ago, we're cuddly little bunnies. The reason outbreaks of violence shock us so much is that they are reported instantaneously. There's always been violence in society, it is just that now every little incident is reported, so it seems a lot worse than it is.

i actually took offense to that last picture pod... my relatives lived through the war.. many were killed, starved and were sent to the camps.. and yeh deep down inside every dutch person there is hate towards the germans... we still refer to them as "muphs"...

but having said that. holland is a very liberal country and the people are not violent (the queen rides her bike through the hague without security)... i dont know a single person in holland who has a gun, nor have i ever seen one (apart from the ones the cops carry)
