What does it take...

have 3+ years experience

apply somewhere that is actually hiring

be above average looking, tall is a plus

The thing that trumps all else is having a connection (a GM or bar manager is the best hookup to have, owner too of course)

many places that are restaurants as well prefer to hire from within. This also happens at clubs.... you should prepare to work as a bar back or busboy until there is room for you to move up.

i'd say experience or skills, looks, connection and lots of persistence, if you're an average looking person male or female.

Thank you, that was a much more discreet way of saying what I was thinking. And no, I don't believe they are for kissing ass.

But, really, I think the main thing is who you know. There are sooooooo many people vying for the bartending positions down here, that you really have to have connections. And, as far as I can tell, skills are not really a requirement. There are a lot of really good bartenders here, but there are also a lot of not so good ones. So, get out and network.
