PARAMARIBO, Suriname: Police officers stationed in Groningen in Suriname on Monday afternoon seized 440 kilos of cocaine after a failed air-drop. This was the biggest drugs seizure this year. The drug were discovered minutes after a small Cessna airplane made a successful emergency landing in the oilfields of the State Oil Company in the Saramacca district.

It is believed that for some reason the crew was forced to make the emergency landing. On arrival of the police, assisted by the SWAT-team and Anti-Drug Squad, one suspect fled the scene. According to eyewitnesses, guards from the State Oil Company who noticed the landing, there were at least three persons in the aircraft, which sustained serious damage to its nose.

On the scene, police discovered 11 bags of cocaine and about 750 meters from the airplane another two bags, totaling some 440 kilos of the drugs. Subsequently the aircraft and the cocaine were seized.

In an interview with Caribbean Net News police spokesman, Inspector John Jones, said so far no arrests had been made, but detectives were following some leads. He noted that the aircraft had no registration number which could complicate the tracking of the plane. Jones stressed that experts had been called in to assist in the investigations. Almost all the drug drops in Suriname originate in Columbia.

In April, police seized 300 kilos of cocaine in a drug bust and arrested two suspects. In a well planned and executed operation by the SWAT-team the drugs were seized in a house in the capital Paramaribo. Also a couple of hand grenades and a quantity of ammunition for shotguns and pistols were confiscated, along with a motorcar. Last week police of the Nickerie district seized 50 kilos of cocaine and arrested three suspects, two Guyanese nationals and a Surinamese national.
