Tainted heroin claims six lives (NYC)

I watch a show on sunday nights called Strong Medicine that had an episode about heroin abuse. The victim was the daughter of the mayor who had bought tainted heroin and almost died several times. Its pretty shocking and disturbing to learn that a lot of times drug users and abusers are from the most unlikely places and economic situations. I know a lot of people up here in Palm Beach that do TONS of coke yet manage to lead normal lives - anyone from doctors and lawyers to trust fund babies. Its pretty sad really....

Not to mention all the people taking percs, oxycontin and all kinds of other stuff like that.

I realize I will get bitched at for saying this' date=' but my first reaction to the story was: damn, if drugs were regulated by the government (legal) this never would have happened.

A startling statistic: only 900 drug related deaths a year? I would have thought it to be a lot more.

[/quote']

Ephedra used to be legal, but the misuse of it caused people to die, so the goverment regulating something means jack shit in my book.

The government has not proven to me the ability to regulate anything reliably. Social Security, school systems, employment standards, banking and finance....to think the goverment regulating Heroin would somehow make it better is wishful thinking. I think the heroin dealers have more of an incentive to make sure people don't die buying their product because dead customers aren't repeat customers. I can't even get the post office to deliver a letter on time let alone stop me from dying on some heroin.

I don’t expect the government to hold my hand and make sure I’m not abusing a legal drug, however, if the government was involve at least people would have an idea of how much crap they were injecting into their bodies. Anyone who intentionally takes more than the recommended amount that will be their choice to live. Just saying that the government can do a better job of keeping the people safe other than waiting till the last minute.

Is it the government's job to be a nanny to all of us? The only protection I ask of them is to keep foreign invaders out and police my streets. Other then that, keep out of my life. I think I know better then some pencil-pushing geek in Washington what's good for me.

Check this article out. I mean, when are we going to put our foot down and say to the government, "look, enough is enough...I don't need you to wipe my ass for me".

Actually no Mursa, his views are classical liberal, which is what would be called a Libertarian today.

Kind of like how any country with the word 'Democratic' in it's name, really isn't.

Today's libs would want it legalized, sure, but taxed out the wazoo. Sin taxes and all. Nanny states blow. Shades of socialism.

haha Pod

laying down the smack.

Shaun is a hypocrite liberal and yet worships the ground GW Bush walks on.

Wrong wrong wrong Norah...I thought you knew my views by now.

Liberals believe goverment is the solution; conservatives feel its the problem that gets in the way of the solution. Liberals believe government has the answers, conservatives believe the answers lay within one's self. Make no mistake, I am conservative. My statements above are consistent with what a TRUE conservative believes in. Liberals are the ones who want the government to wipe their asses for them....

Pod is correct, however, because I am absolutely more Libertarian then Republican philosophically, although I would disagree that my Libertarian philosophical views are rooted in classical liberalism.

thats sounds nice and dandy ...but in reality Republicans are def more hardcore and hardheaded when it comes to drug reform ...

..

..since much of their policies are religion oriented , drugs are essencially Diabolical to them , even more so than democrats who are somewhat a lil more progressive.

DEA...... created by Nixon , The War on Drugs really began to hit its stride with the Reagan administration ...many of the Drug Czars have been republican . etc ......

..

..see my point .

Mursa is right 100%

you guys need to see the History Channel's documentary about drugs, it tells you exactly "why" the DEA was created. it was Nixon and Republican lawmakers.

..

..interesting huh , how they didn't want people to expand their minds(question authority) in order to obey and be hearded like cattle.

History Channel rocks ! 8)

this would be one of the times the term libertarian comes in to play.

when i was in school i knew a guy who had an older brother in the DEA. this guy literally thought weed was the gateway to hell, meanwhile getting piss drunk every night and not remembering what happened the night before or how you got home was perfectly acceptable, simply bc it wasnt "illegal". ignorant to say the least.

i will say i dont mind someone battling meth. id prefer a society that doesnt have meth heads wandering the countryside.

more marijuna smokers were arrested during the clinton administration than any other

i'll be curious as to what Bush's drug arrest record will be when his second term is up in 08 . .

.

.

...i can bet you it'll be higher than Clintons .............arrests are going up as the years go by ..

.

..it's a very lucrative buisiness (the war on drugs) ,hence why i don't see reforms for the foreseable future .

it comes down to $$$$$ and Control ...thats what one should never forget . ;)
