Tropical Depression 27 forms in Caribbean

In what has been a record hurricane season, Tropical Depression 27 formed in the southeastern Caribbean Sea late Sunday and was expected to become Tropical Storm Gamma sometime Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

At 10 p.m. ET Sunday, the system was about 115 miles west of St. Lucia and about 100 miles west of St. Vincent with sustained maximum winds near 35 mph, just 4 mph short of the threshold for a tropical storm.

The depression was moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph and that general motion was expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

Rain accumulations of 5 to 8 inches were expected in the Windward Islands and 3 to 5 inches in the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, with isolated amounts of up to 12 inches possible in higher terrain areas.
