The worst stampede happened in 1990, when 1,426 pilgrims were trampled to death.More recently, 251 pilgrims died two years ago in a stampede during the stone-throwing ritual. A stampede in 2003 killed 36 pilgrims, most of them en route to the devil-stoning ritual, conducted outside Mecca. In 2001, a stampede at the same ritual killed 35.

I have to say something is wrong with those Muslims... getting trampled to death at a stoning ritual is kind of ironic. These people get trampled every year and they are still cool with it. I think its kind of funny actually. ;D You can't have a good hajj without a good amount of trampling.

MINA, Saudi Arabia -- Saudi Arabia is blaming unruly pilgrims for the crush that killed at least 345 people in the Hajj, but many Muslims say better security could have averted the worst disaster to mar the ritual in 16 years.

Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz, as well as the kingdom's interior minister, said the tragedy was caused by pilgrims defying rules by taking their belongings with them and ignoring advice to perform the ritual throughout the day.

"It pains us that so many people died, but we must point out that the security forces averted many more disasters from happening and saved many lives," the state news agency SPA quoted Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz as saying.

The crush, like others in the past, occurred Thursday during the stone-throwing ritual in which the pilgrims stone a symbolic devil. It took place at a wide bridge over the desert plain of Mina, near Mecca.

Health Minister Hamad al-Maneh told Saudi TV that 289 others were injured and taken to hospital. Most of these were not seriously hurt and were released from the hospital.

Video of the scene showed dozens of bodies lying on the ground, covered with sheets and blankets. (Watch the stream of ambulances and medics among the dead -- 3:32)

Many pilgrims insisted on following Prophet Mohammad's example of stoning after noon prayers instead of staggering the ritual throughout the day as some clerics recommended.

But some pilgrims said the authorities had failed to impose their own rules on the ritual, which has seen similar deadly incidents in the past.

The worst crush happened in 1990, when 1,426 pilgrims were trampled to death.

More recently, 251 pilgrims died two years ago in a stampede during the stone-throwing ritual. A crush in 2003 killed 36 pilgrims, most of them en route to the devil-stoning ritual, conducted outside Mecca. In 2001, a stampede at the same ritual killed 35.

"There seemed to be more security forces this year but they were not very organized or had any plan," 28-year-old Jihad, from Egypt, told Reuters.

"Security forces should have concentrated their efforts on removing squatters. This year, they seemed to let them slide by," said Yasser Bakir, 39, also from Egypt.

Witnesses also said the tragedy was caused as the flow of pilgrims entering and leaving the Jamarat bridge clashed, ignoring instructions on huge noticeboards, loudspeakers and pamphlets on how to perform the rites.

"What's the reason for what happened, that's the question that must be answered," wrote columnist Raqiya Shabib in the Saudi-owned al-Hayat newspaper.

"For this not to happen again the organization has got to be rethought at the Jamarat area in particular."

More tragedies

Saudi officials say little could have been done to prevent a crush during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in which 345 people died.

Interior ministry spokesman Maj Gen Mansour al-Turki told the BBC that the dangers would only increase if crowd controls were tightened further.

"People insist that they want to finish their Hajj in the way they think is right and you have a limited effect in using policemen to control people in this regard," he said.

"You cannot really control them by force because if you do probably you will increase the problem because you will have people pushing you. We had so many police officers today who were injured in this situation."

One Islamic academic warned the crush would not be the last tragedy to strike the Hajj pilgrimage.

The director of the Institute for the Study of the Arab World and Islam, based in Edinburgh, said it only took one or two people to spark a stampede at the event.

Professor Yasir Suleiman told the Press Association: "Will this be prevented in the future? I don't think so.

"More Muslims than ever before are fulfilling the fifth pillar of Islam and making the pilgrimage to Mecca because they are wealthier and transport is easier.

"So the authorities would never be able to restrict the numbers going to the Hajj. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

"And if they put more police there to organize things better, they would be accused of taking up space that could have been for pilgrims."

Professor Suleiman said what all pilgrims must do is act sensibly and think of safety to avoid further tragedies.

"Unfortunately, as in this instance, people still ignore official warnings not to bring luggage to the Jamarat Bridge, which caused pilgrims to trip and led to the crush," he continued.

"You get other people who wear flimsy flip-flops and when one comes off they bend down to try and pick it up and start shoving and that's it.

"It only takes one or two stupid people out of a couple of million to cause a tragedy like this."

They should have had 2 separate lines, one to get beaten to death with a rock, and the other to have ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves trample your ass to death.
