Download speeds are one thing, but they need to work on upload speeds across the board for broadband users.

I hate my comcast. Once a day, I have to unplugg my modem, unplug my router, re plug in my modem, wait for it to come online, then re plug in my router, then wait for it to come back online, then have to reconnect my vpn for work, then restart my online radio station, then reload some pages...

I HATE COMCAST!!!!!!!!!!

8mbps/768kbps up is the best deal in the market right now.

when they jump to 12(6mbps customers)/16 (8mbps customers) is when bellsouth is really going to feel it.

comcast has their infrastructure tight as fuck .. they are ready for the next wave of content and customers.

bellsouth is just barely pushin 6 now .. and everyone wants to do video .. i have to say the war is over and dsl lost.

Ramon the war isn't over at all. In fact DSK is gaining on cable due to price.. No one needs that much bandwith... It will be a price war and DSL will win...

Have you been reading the same numbers I have? The incumbents (telcos) are loosing customers due to VoIP left and right and due to that they are loosing the DSL battle because they cannot do naked DSL for some odd reason.

Cable can beat them on price too .. Comcast has 6mbps Cable for 29.99 for 6 months with no contract right now or 8mbps for 29.99 for 3 months.

no one needs that bandwidth till you start doing things like IPTV and VoD .. just wait.

AT&T just launched their IPTV product in San Antonio and its the larget deployment of its kind.

i don't download music or video's (okay maybe 1 porn once) so i don't need all that super fast crap.. i just like to post on the boards, check my e-mails and look up shit on e-bay... hence why i chose the basic DSL over cable...

it does its job and i'm a happy camper ;)

I remember hearing the same spiel from people when dialup was prevalent and broadband via cable or DSL was a "luxury" or something that "only geeks needed..."

I worked for Covad back in the dot com boom, and that was the biggest battle, getting people to get out of that mentality...they didn't think they needed the speed.

It's like hard drive space. Seven years ago, my 40 gig IBM Deskstar drive was the shit, now you need 40 gigs just to install the OS...well not quite, but almost.

I wouldn't count out DSL at the moment. Cable is winning the speed wars right now, due to massive infrastructure investments, since they are more in a position to deliver true video on demand, IPTV, etc...but the DSL providers are lining up their next-gen offerings as well. Nevermind you've got people like Verizon working on getting FTTH deployed.

Back in '01 Comcast up in New Jersey was offering VOD services, VOD was a fairly new technology so as with any new technology there’s always a few glitches in the system. Customers would purchase VOD movies and if there was as much as a slight glitch or pause in the movie they would call Customer service and bitch until they get the movie for free.

Obviously Comcast was loosing money so they decided to hire this guy whose sole function was to watch each new movie from beginning to end, rewind the movie from end to beginning and fast forward from beginning to end.

Now if you know anything about the Cable systems you will know that one of the biggest revenue generator is the adult movies. Comcast VOD was about 80% porn so this guy had to sit and watch hardcore porn 8 hours a day.

Probably like that scene in the Ali G Movie where Ali and his friends go into the contraband locker in the Customs House.

Oddly enough, DSL was initially conceived as a technology for video on demand. When I was with Covad, one of the techs I worked with had been with Bell Atlantic back in the early 1990s, and he paid a visit to Bell Labs, who showed him this new "Digital Subscriber Line" technology, that they were going to use to do video on demand.

VOD is crap! Thus why Netflix is crushing it and the divide is only getting bigger. VOD has 800 titles, Netflix has 65,000.

Ramon your numbers are for promotions.. The real price of my comcast is 60 bucks. When naked dsl comes, it will be 20 bucks.. So for 40 dollars more, would I really want comcast??? Fuck no...Thats the point, people will spend less to get less, but the less is really insignificant to the end user...

Dish network with netflix will run you about 60 bucks a month, toss in dsl, you are looking at 80 bucks a month..

40 for Dish

14 for netflix

20 or so for dsl..

Comcast alone is 50 for subscribers for the net!!!

The tech is in place in other nations to do faster broadband on the cheap.

In Hong Kong, you can get 10 Mbps download for 19 bucks a month. Of course they have a huge population density so it isn't a big issue for delivery. Korea is another broadband haven.

The big issue here is sprawl and the Universal Service requirements. Broadband is exempt from Universal Service, so the telcos and cable firms feel no need to bring the service to the outlying areas. Universal Service is the government program where urban and suburban telephone users subsidize rural service. If you read the stories on www.dslreports.com, you'll hear people being quoted outrageous install fees who live out in the sticks.

Comcast is 42.95 for 6mbps and 52.95 for 8mbps plus a 15 dollar discount for being a comcast customer.

Bellsouth better get their naked dsl project running then. They are too busy trying to launch their wireless broadband initiative for rural locations to care it seems.

it's all about convergence at the end of the day its going to be one pipe that gives you voice , data , video and who knows what else and it will be mobile and this is not too far off folks.

$25 dsl is already available for 512k/128k up or whatever it is.

VoD is not crap. The fact I can see anything from HBO's library anytime I want is pretty damn good.

You are right, VOD is not the crap, IT'S HBO LIBRARY that is crap..

Ramon, save the money you spend on HBO or VOD and get Netflix... They have exactly 64,200 more movies.. I'm sure there is some HBO stuff on Netflix as well ;)

It cost 14 bucks...

If and when Bell south drops the naked dsl, everyones comcast bill will lower... If not the masses will switch big time..

VoD is convenient if the library exists. My parents have the full package from Cablevision, and it works just fine for spur-of-the-moment viewing. Plus, as of right now, it's really hard to get full HD content from Netflix or even Blockbuster.

A fast connection isn't worth much if there isn't anything to deliver over it.

Cable is unreliable!!!!!!!!!!! Always has been and for the forseeable future it will be as well. Anywhere I have lived and had cable it has been a more often than not pain. It goes out, it has inconsistent signals on every other channel, and Digital Cable is BS and just a way for them to charge more! I have DSL and rarely if ever have problems. It may not be as fast as cable but the phone never goes out. Not even when there is a hurricane. Fucking cable dies when the wind blows.

I love my Directv and Dish is even cheaper.. Plus after a storm when all the poles are knocked down, you can watch tv unlike the cable customers who hvae to wait 60 days..
