FAQ: DXM

DXM is a dissociative anesthestic commonly found in cough syrup. It has been used recreationaly for years. It only came to the attention of the ecstasy using community in 1999, when pills cotaining high doses of DXM were sold as "XTC".

Dancesafe were the first to publicise that certain pills sold in the Bay Area at the time contained DXM and that it was these pills that were causing many people to become very ill, and even die.

These were two of the most common DXM pills found at that time. They were both copies of pills that had a reputation for being good quality MDMA. The makers of these pills used this reputation to flood the market with a pill that cost them a greatdeal less than one that actually contain an MDxx chemical. Of course they didn't tell the people they were selling them to it's real contents. This is where the danger comes in.

When a user takes a DXM pill, thinking that it is MDMA, they are in great danger of physical harm. The problem is not the DXM itself, which as we've pointed out has been used recreationally for years, but the users expectation of an "XTC" experience.

DXM is a dissociative like Ketamine. This type of drug is very unlike MDMA. It makes a person feel like their body is not their own. It canbe described in a very rough way as "trippy". Recreational use of cough syrup is often referred to as "Robo-Tripping", named after Robotrussin, a common cough syrup.

This dissociative effect can come as a great shock to someone expecting a loved up MDMA experience. And nothing brings on a bad trip like a trip you werent expecting.

But far worse than this is are physical effects, which if you arent aware of or prepared for can cause you great harm.

One of DXM useful side effects as a cough supressant is it's anti-cholinergic effect. What this means is it slows down or stops your sweating response. This is ok when your lying in bed with a cold, but if you are dancing all night, in a hot, unventilated rave, you could end up dead. MDMA also does this, to a degree. This is why it is important to stay hydrated when dancing, regardless of what you have taken.

DXM has one other big problem for someone who takes it without their knowledge. If you take a DXM and an MDMA pill you are putting an extreme load on your liver, as both these chemicals are broken down by the same enzyme (CYP-2D6). Your chances of liver failure or heatstroke are more than doubled.

So what can you do to be aware of what you are taking?

DXM will give this reaction to all Marquis-based reagent kits:

SMOKE TO GREY TO BLACK indicates the presence of DXM.

NB Remember smoke is not the primary indicator. Pure MDMA powder, and some MDMA pills, will give a small puff of gas or smoke at the beginning of the reaction. WHat you are looking for is a very slow colour change to grey/black, with none of the purple/blue tinge associated with MDxx.
