HIALEAH, Fla. -- A teenager with a brown belt in karate used a samurai sword to scare off a burglar who was after his PlayStation 3 video game console.

Last Friday afternoon, Damian Fernandez and his 15-year-old sister, Deanne Fernandez, were home alone at their northwest Miami-Dade County home while their parents were at work when they heard knocking on the front door. Moments later, two men were prying the front door unlocked, prompting Deanne to hide in her closet.

"I was so scared," she said.

As her brother slept in the next room, the burglars ransacked their parents' room, taking some jewelry before moving on to what they were really after -- a PlayStation 3.

According to a police report, one of the burglars kicked in Deanne's bedroom door. She said she could see his foot through the closet panels.

The burglar found the empty PlayStation 3 box and ran out of the room, but Damian was waiting for him.

"Once I saw him take off running back, I jumped off my (bunk) bed and I grabbed my sword … and I just waited for him," he said.

Damian said he lunged at him with his samurai sword, striking him in the chest.

"He freaked out," Damian said.

The burglar ran out of the house with Damian chasing him down the road. When police arrived, a K-9 officer located the burglar hiding behind a neighbor's palm tree. The second burglar got away.

Javier Cotera, 21, was arrested and released early the next morning on bond.

Local 10 attempted to contact Cotera at his Hialeah home, but his family said he wasn't there and that they didn't know anything about it.

Damian and Deanne's father, Delio Fernandez, said he is concerned Cotera is out of jail.

"If he would have had a gun, I could have lost one of my children," he said.

Cotera is scheduled to appear in court in two weeks to face three felony charges

Only in Hollywood.

I’ve never been a big “gun person.†But this story about a not-so-smart burglar made me a little happier that we have the Second Amendment. I’m also happy that we have the Fifth Amendment, I don’t have to tell you why.

HOLLYWOOD, Fl. (Miami Herald) — With a man breaking through the front door, a Hollywood 15-year-old loaded his father’s gun, waited for the intruder to come in and shot him, police said.

Keil Jumper, 22, who police said has a long rap sheet, was later found bleeding in an area between two houses. Police said Jumper was seriously injured but his injuries didn’t appear life threatening.

The incident happened about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, when Jumper attempted to break down the front door, then picked up a bicycle to smash the window, police said. The sounds terrified a family of eight to 10 people who were asleep in the home, which is on South 61st Avenue in Hollywood, police said.

Police said the teenager is unlikely to be charged in the case. But they said Jumper, who was shot several times, will be — once he’s discharged from Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

In the burglar’s defense, he didn’t know the kid had a gun. Then again, he should have realized it was Southern Florida where you get a complimentary gun with a homegrown orange.

Police said he was seriously injured, but he would probably survive. Wish I could say the same for his dignity.

In a related story, National Rifle Association President Kayne Robinson announced that the 15-year old boy will be the recipient of their Humanitarian award.

Sounds like the kids are one up over the cops.

Truth is that guns save between 1 million and 2 million lives a year. Only 16,000+/- die because of guns every year......Don't listen to what they say, guns can be good... But in the wrong hands.....

That kid is seriously lucky the burgler didn't have a gun. I wonder if he was immating the sound effects like on Bruce Lee movies when he was chasing him.

WAAAAAAHHH!

I dont see anything wrong in what he did, stating that this only happens in ialeah is ridiculous. Anybody in the kids position would of done the same either grab a sword, bat, hammer, knife, stick or a gun to protect himself an the family from getting robbed.

They couldn't figure out exactly how many people lived in the house????
