And this was broadcast in the more liberal muslim nations....Women are second class citizens in muslim cultures. Horrible...

Move over, Dr. Phil, there's a new relationship expert in town.

He's Saudi author and cleric, "Dr." Muhammad Al-'Arifi, who in a remarkable segment broadcast on Saudi and Kuwaiti television in September, counseled young Muslim men on how to treat their wives.

"Admonish them – once, twice, three times, four times, ten times," he advised. "If this doesn't help, refuse to share their beds."

And if that doesn't work?

"Beat them," one of his three young advisees responded.

"That's right," Al-'Arifi said.

He goes on to calmly explain to the young men that hitting their future wives in the face is a no-no.

"Beating in the face is forbidden, even when it comes to animals," he explained. "Even if you want your camel or donkey to start walking, you are not allowed to beat it in the face. If this is true for animals, it is all the more true when it comes to humans. So beatings should be light and not in the face."

His final words of wisdom?

"Woman, it has gone too far. I can't bear it anymore," he tells the men to tell their wives. "If he beats her, the beatings must be light and must not make her face ugly.

"He must beat her where it will not leave marks. He should not beat her on the hand... He should beat her in some places where it will not cause any damage. He should not beat her like he would beat an animal or a child -- slapping them right and left.

"Unfortunately, many husbands beat their wives only when they get mad, and when they start beating, it as if they are punching a wall – they beat with their hands, right and left, and sometimes use their feet. Brother, it is a human being you are beating. This is forbidden. He must not do this."

is this the follow up to Sharazad(sp) Ali's relationship book where she advised men to slap their women in the mouth when they disrespect them? I really do not know what to say about this except, anybody remember Lorena Bobbitt and her husbby John Bobbit?

This Muslim cleric thinks that the way women dress abuses men, equating it to spousal or child abuse.

Women blamed for men’s sleepless nights

Women who wear figure-hugging clothes are giving Muslim men sleepless nights and distracting them from prayer, a prominent cleric said yesterday.

Attacking the appeal of modern Malaysian women, Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat — a fundamentalist Muslim cleric who controls the main opposition party and one of the country’s 13 states — said that provocative clothes were a form of “emotional abuseâ€.

Clothes that are modest by Western standards were, he said, stopping the country’s men getting a good night’s sleep. “We always [hear about] the abuse of children and wives in households, which is easily perceived by the eye but the emotional abuse of men cannot be seen,†Mr Nik Abdul Aziz said. “Our prayers become unfocused and our sleep is often disturbed.†Like so many of his previous outbursts, the comments drew instant criticism from women’s groups...

This explains why my rebellious Saudi girlfriend loves to dress provocatively and loves to prance around the house naked. It's her way of saying "Fuck You" to the traditional male figures she was surrounded with through her adolescence. I don't mind though... she FINE!! And from the looks of all her close Saudi girlfriends spread across this country... godDAMN them girls got it goin' on!!!

I've seen it happen a million times in all repressive cultures around the globe. Guy or girl it doesn't matter.

Examples -

- I came down here to go to school. Yeah UM, but you know what? Private education works. Screw public. Anyway, I met and saw plenty of kids from a repressed background who just went apeshit the minute they got the taste of independence from Mom and Dad. From the girls in the local whore chapt...er sorority to the closeted gay guy down the hall who finally got to be himself, I was witness to many instances of people from a repressed upbringing who just went buck wild when they got a taste of freedom.

The corollary to that situation was, when Mom and Dad's money ran out, or they got tired of the shit, they essentially had their parole revoked, and went to a more "sensible" school close to home, and fell back into the mold.

That being said, the people whom I know that have lasted down here over the decade of my experience in this area, have come from upbringings of tolerance and logic. Yeah I come off as an asshole, but you know what? I'm just being realistic. That's how I was bought up. No boogeyman in the sky threatening to kill me if I screw outside of marriage, etc...

I'm willing to gamble that within our lifetimes, that someday there will be a cultural rebellion within the repressive religious cultures in this world, and finally we can sweep the irrational beliefs in a pissed-off higher power into the dustbin of history and begin living and exercising our potential as sentient beings.

Not for nothing but if it wasn't for Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and the various animistic beliefs, i.e. organized religion, we would be cruising around the cosmos in starships right now and I'd be covering the nightlife scene in the next galaxy over, and be back here on Earth in time for dinner.

We would be "gods" ourselves. In essence each one of us would be able to say "Reality is what I determine it to be!"

We would not be limited.

Irrational beliefs in a higher power limit the potential of the human mind.

And if any of you are offended, I'm sorry. Not really though.

You're actually describing Buddhism pretty closely (I noticed you lumped it into the same pot as the monotheist religions). Look into it further. I think you could be Buddhist (personal God, avoid theology, expansion of mind, unity, etc.) Danny Lama....haha

That faith places limits on you too, i.e. in everyday life. I just object to the preachy aspect of all these religions, i.e. even down to daily stuff...for example, if I want to be a vegetarian, that's my decision, and my decision alone.

I agree 100% Norah but this has nothing to do with Iraq. In fact, my support of the war and the Republican Party as a whole is diminishing quickly. If Rudy doesnt get the nomination, I am voting Libertarian.
