NEXT GATECRASHER LINEUP @ THE LIMELIGHT - JULY 7TH

Recommended Posts

Gatecrasher returns to New York on the 7th July to continue it's monthly residency at Limelight. In attendance will be Matt Hardwick, Nick Riley and homegrown talent Bill Patrick

MATT HARDWICK - Ex-Sheffield Wednesday footballer Matt began his Djing career with stints on pirate radio. After a chance meeting with Gatecrasher's promoters, Matt was asked to become weekly resident at the club. In the last five years his three hour sets of "tough, deep and progressive, moving towards energetic trance" have taken him from Sheffield to destinations as distant as Japan, Australia and America.

NICK RILEY - Steem resident, Nick Riley bought his first set of decks back in 1994 and started mixing old rave and jungle records. A year later he invested in a pair of Technics 1210's and started to take things a little more seriously. Hardcore and Jungle were dying so he started buying trance records.

He was getting the odd warm up slot, but really wanted to play on a regular basis. He gave local promoters demo tapes but they were reluctant to book him without more experience. The only way round it was to set up his own night, so in early '97 Nick, Dotun Edema and Phil Guilfoyle approached the newly opened Orchis about starting up a weekly house night. Again, having had little experience DJing and no promotion experience the management were apprehensive about letting them do a weekly night. Instead they compromised and let them do a series of 5 one-offs. They were very successful and in September '98 Delve Deeper went weekly. Delve Deeper not only enabled Nick to play out on a regular basis, it also allowed him to play alongside big names such as Lee Burridge, Anthony Pappa, Craig Richards and Hybrid. It was invaluable experience.

In June '99 they decided to celebrate the success of Delve Deeper by putting on a summer ball at the Republic. With the Tyrant sound system (Lee Burridge and Craig Richards) headlining it didn't take long for the tickets to sell out. It was Nick's first experience of playing in a 'Superclub' and he loved every minute of it.

Shortly after the summer ball, they were approached by the Republic management with a view to promoting a midweek house night at its new club 'Bed' due to open the following March. They decided that the new night (Steem) would play predominantly trance, whereas Delve Deeper would stay progressive. Nick was to be resident at both nights.

Between the Summer ball and the opening of Steem he was invited to play regularly at the Republic's Monday night 'Blessed', filling in for Matt Hardwick when he was away on Gatecrasher tours. It enabled him to play alongside premier league DJ's such as Fergie, John Kelly and John '00' Fleming.

In March 2000, Steem opened its doors for the first time at Bed. With Guy Ornadel topping the bill, Steem was rammed. With regular appearances from the likes of Seb Fontaine, John Kelly and JFK, Steem is proving to be amazingly popular.

After a chance meeting with Gatecrasher promoter, Simon Oates, he was given the opportunity to play at Gatecrasher. As if there wasn't enough pressure already, Rapture TV were filming all night! As well as playing out of Sheffield at venues such as Eden in Lincolnshire and the Bomb in Nottingham, Nick has more recently been spending time in London working in the studio alongside Andrew Galea (Giresse). Their first tune (yet to be named) will be completed in early May.
