Banned in the USA

Recommended Posts

FYI: it was _worse_ then outright banning the songs. the list was circulated by the heads of clear channel (the despicable and disreputable owner of the marjority of mainstream radio stations in the US) not outright banning the songs, but basically "suggesting" that they should not be played. thus, if your station _does_ play any of these songs, expect your job not to exist by tomorrow. you can legally fight "banning" a song as part of your first amendment rights, but when corporate muscle is involved it is all perfectly legal.

also, note that "all rage against the machine songs" are banned. i haven't listened to them in a while, but it is a shame that in a time where we _need_ people to be thinking about what this country is about to do from _all_ sides, any opposition to "we stand by our president" is blacklisted.

clear channel did *not* ban these songs. nor did they suggest that they *not* be played.

the list was made at clearchannels corporate headquarters so that program directors at 100s of stations did not have to sit down and make a list themselves. there was no indication that the songs should not be played. rather, it was simply a list of every song that might be relative to the events of sept 11. many media outlets (all movie companies, every tv station, etc) are looking at some of the stuff they offer to make sure that they arent being total clods with what they present. after all, when 5000 ppl die in a burning building, "burning down the house" might be considered poor taste.

take it easy. not everything is a big corporate conspiracy.

please see salon.com's coverage of clear channel, specifically W.R.T. the lawsuit that has recently been filed against them alleging monopolistic practices. we have laws in this country to proctect enterprises like clear channel from engaging in anticompetitive behavior under the guise of free enterprise, and i personally would be glad to see them eradicated.

(it needs to be said that salon.com is a media organization just like any other and is thus susceptible to bias and personal opinion. seek out the facts)

Some radio stations still play some of the songs eventhough they were told not to play it... like 92.3..they played...System of a Down "Chop Suey!" which was banned...only cause of the title...

the radio station was saying the song has nothing to do with anyting...theyre not saying anything bad and they said what happened to freedom of speech???....
