Now he's taking his career in a new direction. With his Mojolators project poised to blow up worldwide, he's ready to begin his assault on dance floors as a producer and remixer. With only a brief discography, Justin Nichols and the Mojolators are already refining a house sound that pleases DJs across the 4/4 spectrum. From his Brooklyn studio, Nichols pastes together samples and live instruments to make music that takes in everything from jazz to techno. His music is party music, plain and simple -- and it works a crowd to devastating effect.Always sniffing out fresh talent, the UK's mighty Defected label snatched up the Mojolators for a three EP deal in Spring 2001, signing Nichols to their underground-focused sister imprint Fluential. They also gave the Mojolators remix duty on Knee Deep's "I'll Be There For You." Considering Defected's past success breaking Hatiras, Paul Johnson, ATFC and Eddie Amador, the Mojolators could well be the next underground act to crossover. The Mojolators first made their mark in 2000 with their monstrous debut 12", "Drifting'/To The Music", released by Chicago's esteemed Moody Records. With its thick house beats, hypnotic Rhodes piano loop and filtered vocals, this record was a smash -- hammered by top DJs across the globe and licensed for mix CDs by Pete Tong, DJ Dan and the UK's Grant Nelson. Nichols ended 2000 on a strong note, with his "Carnival" 12" on Catalyst records getting another great response. Now in 2001, "Drifting'" still lives on. Look for the Mojolators to attack the charts with a red-hot vocal version due on Portent Records in summer 2001. Tipped by the BBC as one of the biggest tunes from the 2001 WMC and getting play from the top UK DJs, "Drifting'" appears headed for crossover success and endless Ibiza memories. In the states, Nichols is setting up his own label, Club Recordings, with roommate and fellow producer Jason "Jinx" Zambito. Nichols plans to launch the label with a co-production by the two bosses before moving on to solo productions and work by other producers. He also keeps a busy DJ schedule, traveling coast to coast to drop sets ranging everywhere from deep house to bangin' Chicago tracks.
