  5. Gareth Emery bio: Whether it was his critically acclaimed debut on the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, or his rise to number 23 in the definitive DJ Mag Top 100 Poll, there wasn?t much that didn?t go right for Gareth Emery in 2008, a year that saw him become increasingly established as one of the most innovative, unique, and exciting figures in modern dance music. With his numerous world-class productions topping charts everywhere, and his explosive DJ sets continuing to pack out clubs across the globe, you could be forgiven for thinking he?s a long-established dance music old hand. Well he?s not: he?s 28, and as it happens, he?s only just getting started. Writing and playing music is fundamental to Gareth Emery. His first gigs were at the age of 4, when despite never having lessons, he turned out to be so handy on the piano that his teachers insisted on him taking over the duties in school assembly. At 15, he found himself neglecting classical music training to sneak out to play guitar in a local indie band so ahead of their years that they found themselves headlining Southampton?s music pubs despite all being underage. And at 22, whilst on holiday in France, fiddling with a £500 laptop and wondering what he was going to do with his recent politics degree, he wrote his first electronic classic: the seminal ?Mistral?. Plenty more were to come. Since then, the passing years have been pretty good to this young Brit. His relentless touring schedule now sees him banking around 250,000 air miles every year, unequivocally demolishing dancefloors at the world?s finest clubs and festivals. You?ll find him at global superclubs like Home in Sydney, Zouk in Singapore, The Guverment in Toronto and Amnesia in Ibiza. You?ll find him at festivals like Holland?s legendary 30,000 strong Trance Energy and Belgium?s Tomorrowland. And you?ll also find him at the likes of Godskitchen and The Ministry of Sound in his native UK. In short, his unique, distinctive style is one that?s got people talking, with events in over 25 countries a year a testament to his exploding worldwide popularity. Today, in the Emery studio, it?s all about innovation, setting benchmarks, and challenging perceptions. Constantly escaping categorisation, his productions, (which are composed, produced, and engineered entirely by him), span the worlds of trance, progressive, electro, techno, and a few other places. Languid, spacey grooves, juddering basslines, killer melodies, and hooks that take your breath away mean that it?s a given that Armin, Tiesto, Oakenfold, and Judge Jules have all been fully paid-up members of the Emery fan club for years, while both Ferry Corsten and Paul van Dyk have tipped him as a future star. Constantly ahead of the game, Gareth was one of the first DJs to embrace podcasting when he launched The Gareth Emery Podcast in early 2006. The antithesis of long drawn-out DJ mixes, the show soon became the essential download for switched on, savvy dance music fans, with each short but sweet episode providing a mouth-watering expose of the fortnight?s best music. Its success hasn?t gone unnoticed by the industry either, being nominated for ?Best Podcast? at the Miami IMDA awards every year since the category was introduced. With a list of achievements already far surpassing most DJs ten years his senior, Gareth Emery could easily sit back and be content with his lot, but you get the feeling that won?t be happening. His 2009 plans encompass a staggering amount of new projects, including his debut artist album: a long-awaited opus full of completely new material, and Garuda, his new record label and events brand he?s launching after previously heading the much-missed Five AM imprint. Listening to him speak about Garuda tells you all you need to know about the Emery ethos: ?I don?t care if we release two records a year or ten, as long as each one utterly blows me away?. And as long as the music passes his impossibly high barometer of quality, he isn?t even bothered if it sells, although given his flawless record of producing and signing tracks that top DJ and sales charts everywhere, you rather suspect they will. ?It?s about nothing more than hunting down the most incredible, life-changing music out there, and trying to give as many people as possible across this planet a taste of it?. And that?s what it?s all about, right? See you down the front. Rank1 bio: They?re one of Europe?s most established and respected dance acts. Their debut release, ?Airwave? was the first Dutch record ever to hit the 1 position in the European dance charts and went Top 10 in the UK. Over the last 8 years, they have continued to pack the record boxes of world?s A-list spinners with floor-monsters like ?Symsonic?, ?Such is Life?, ?Breathing? & ?Life Less Ordinary?? Performing to tens of thousands of dance fans every week, they play at some of the biggest dance events in the world. Meet Piet Bervoets & Benno de Goeij - better known as Rank 1! Piet?s production career started in 1995, when he banded together with another producer Carlo Resoort to produce the proto tech-trance hit, ?The Silmarillia?. He went on to create the massively infectious ?Instant Moments? in 1997 under the pseudonym R.O.O.S. Benno meanwhile collaborated with the at-the-time unknown Tiësto as Kamaya Painters, producing the scene-setting trance classic, ?Endless Wave?. He was also behind the pan-European hit, ?Deadline? under the name Dutch Force. A chance meeting at a party in the spring of 1997 set Piet & Benno down the road to Rank 1. Introduced by a mutual friend, they spent the entire night discussing their passion for electronic music. Whilst Benno had no formal production training, Piet saw that his classical music background had given him a natural ear for perfect melodies and powerful riffs. This was quickly born out by their debut collaboration? As the Dutch trance tidal wave began to rise over Europe, the pair found themselves perfectly positioned to ride it. Championed by fellow Netherlanders Armin van Buuren, Tiësto and Ferry Corsten, the stadium-sized sound of ?Airwave? exploded across the continent in 1999. By the following year the track had been released in over 40 countries around the world and cemented the duo?s place in Trance music?s hall of fame. Working at roughly one release a year, Rank 1 followed-up with ?Such is Life? (2001), ?Awakening? (taken from their debut album ?Symsonic? - both 2002), ?It?s up To You? (2003), ?Beats At Rank-1 Dotcom? (2004) and ?Opus?/?Top Gear? (2005). After a year?s production break they returned to the fray in 07 with two monster collaborations: ?Life Less Ordinary? (in tandem with Alex Morph) and the ?This World is Watching Me?, co-produced with Armin. Rank 1 also has an estimable remix-ography to their name. Freddy Mercury, Ferry Corsten, Push, Cygnus X, Delirium, Cosmic Gate, Marcel Woods, Mr Sam, Ronald van Gelderen, Angelic and Ayumi Hamasaki have all been given Rank 1?s studio re-touch. The outfit now has two distinct branches. Benno takes care of all the Rank 1?s production elements. He is currently shaping their new artist album and has just co-produced the new Armin van Buuren?s long-player ?Imagine?. Piet meanwhile has the role of globe-trotting DJ, spinning at clubbing tent-pole events like Castle Dance in Russia & Dance Valley in his native Holland, as well as regular Ibiza sessions. Over recent years, Rank 1 have become increasingly about the LIVE performance. They became the first act to perform at Sensation and famously forced the closure of doors when 25,000 clubbers packed-out Trance Energy?s main arena to see them play. They have continued to thrill crowds at some Europe?s best-known festivals including Mystery Land & Germany?s Nature One. When it comes to interviews, Benno & Piet are famously reclusive. They don?t like the term ?success? as it implies they have already arrived. Instead, they prefer to speak in terms of ?progression? & ?perfection?. But ultimately they let their music do the talking!

  7. Rhythm (devoted to the art of moving butts) presents: :::lotus launch party::: ...with special guest... dennis ferrer (objektivity, nyc) ...introducing lotus artists... dj smash (giant step | blue note | motown remixed, nyc) halo (city deep music) aybee (deepblak) vincent kwok morrisson (live pa) a special evening launching lotus, san francisco's newest agency, with a rare west coast appearance by one of house music's biggest stars, dennis ferrer. lotus is a new san francisco based artist booking and management agency. in addition to the agency, lotus specializes in the production and promotion of quality soul inspired events including rhythm (devoted to the art of moving butts), the yoruba dance sessions, feedback, soul mama, and collaborative events with various promoters and clubs throughout the us. dennis ferrer right place, right time. it's an old cliché, but it's one that's been the definition of dennis ferrer's musical career. just as the dance music world was heading into the world of afro-centric house, ferrer was there. and then, when it began to embrace the mix of tech and soul, ferrer was there again, leading the way with his impeccable productions. as ferrer goes, it seems, so does electronic music. and, as someone who's never content to do the same thing twice, it's clear that he'll be staying on top for years to come. ferrer burst back into the consciousness of most dance music heads with the release of "sandcastles," (ibadan) his collaboration with jerome sydenham in 2003. a throwback to his techno roots as producer of the first ever release on synewave in 1994 and mixed with a healthy dose of soul, the track was a massive hit for the duo. but, to his credit, ferrer didn't simply repeat the formula afterwards. instead, whether it's been the gospel house sounds of his remix of blaze & barbara tucker's "most precious love" (defected) or the deeper-than-deep rework of fish go deep's "the cure & the cause," (defected) ferrer has continued to push a variety of genres all at once. it's clear that ferrer isn't content to rest on his laurels: he's too busy dreaming up new ways to shock and delight audiences. of course, we do say "back" into the consciousness of dance music heads because ferrer has been around for far longer than 'sandcastles'. he was crafting techno records in the mid-'90s as morph and then had success in the afro and gospel house scenes with releases via his sfere label, an imprint he began alongside kerri chandler. "sandcastles" merely marked his return to techno phase?and broadened his appeal to a new audience largely unfamiliar with his past work. but it's this past work that gives his new productions such resonance: unlike many of this house peers, ferrer's techno experience has given him an edge that you can hear in his recent work. "son of raw," (ibadan) "church lady," (defected) "underground is my home," (king street sounds) and "touched the sky" (king street sounds) have all been huge dancefloor anthems and all show a different side of the ferrer personality. as he's said in interviews, "it doesn't matter if it's gospel house, brazilian house, jazz house, or whatever. as long as it's got soul and moves people, that's all that matters." collected on his full-length the world as i see it (king street sounds), it's a sound that reached many different audiences. "transitions" and "p2daj" were huge in the techno world, while the beautiful ode "how do i let go" was a hit in the gospel house scene, the success of which has become bittersweet considering the recent passing of its vocalist, kt brooks, one of ferrer's favorite vocal collaborators. ferrer has brought that anything goes approach to his newest venture, objektivity. the new imprint has thus far focused itself on vocals, featuring often unlikely turns from indie heroes like ane brun and télépopmusik. low slung and deep, objektivity is a cutting-edge label in touch with its time, putting a uniquely american spin on the deep house revival that is currently making waves in europe. and with releases from the likes of the young phenoms the martinez brothers and classic new york house heads like timmy regisford and quentin harris, it's obvious that ferrer doesn't regard the label as a vanity project. objektivity is a living, breathing thing?one that's set to drop bombs on the dancefloor for years to come. but ferrer isn't just limiting the explosions to his own label. his remix of the sunburst band's "journey to the sun" (z records) is a stunning crystallization of his stripped-down dubby, techie side, while his forthcoming remix of loco dice's "breakfast at nina's" (desolat) confirms his connection to europe's techno vanguard. and 2009 promises even more to come... ferrer wasn't always the confident anthem machine of recent vintage. in fact, his musical beginnings were quite humble. born and raised in the bronx, he remembers his parents buying him a toy piano at an early age and composing his own little ditties. "i remember my aunts and uncles playing music in the house and then trying to follow along." like many in the bronx, ferrer was influenced by many different styles of music. rap, disco, even kiss. "i grew up in the whatever age, where you would listen to everything and i'm doing the same thing now." his proper introduction to electronic music, however, occurred much later. it was around the time that he bought his first keyboard, an ensoniq sq1. "yeah, i used to cut school and go to manny's or sam ash and i'd be there from one o'clock in the afternoon until four when they kicked me out." ferrer spent his nights seeing louie vega at the devil's nest and began to make tracks, eventually hooking up with an unlikely collaborator, tetsu inoue. the noted ambient producer and ferrer worked under the name om, releasing a full-length entitled instant enlightenment (c&s). but ambient wasn't quite ferrer's cup of tea and the producer was soon wooed away to experimental by damon wild. after a short time working with wild, though, ferrer quit the music business entirely. "i sold all of my gear and went back to school for applications programming," he recalls. and, yet, he couldn't give it up entirely. while he was at school, ferrer moonlighted at rogue music, a new york music equipment store. and he continued to fool around a little bit with music, despite his lack of gear: "i did these drum cds of drum sounds, while i was there and ended up meeting people like kenny dope, jerome sydenham, kerri chandler." the latter was perhaps the most important, as ferrer lived down the block from chandler in new jersey. when ferrer landed up on wall street with an insurance company, he would often visit chandler after work, soliciting advice on new productions and slowly teaching himself how to make house. coming from a tech background, this wasn't this easiest thing in the world. ferrer began to spend more and more time at chandler's house, eventually becoming enough of a fixture that he was given keys to the place and a room of his own for his equipment. and being around chandler made the transition easier. "i had great tutors," he says. "this was around the time that kerri was doing stuff like 'atmosphere' and i was just sitting there listening to it get made in the room next door." soon, chandler suggested a label where ferrer could finally get his feet wet again in the recording industry. the result was sfere records and, along with it, the afro-centric sound that came to define ferrer's second chapter in electronic music. "after sfere started," ferrer remembers, "everything just started clicking and taking off." hits like "ko ko" (ibadan), "funu" (basic recordings), and "dem people go" (king street sounds) soon followed, with ferrer simultaneously also working the gospel house angle with the soul collectives series (large records) and tracks like "grateful" (sfere), which featured the vocal talents of one of ferrer's favorite singers, kenny bobien. but, like any great artist, ferrer is restless and seeks to flip the script from time to time. "i never want to get caught doing the same thing twice," ferrer has often proclaimed. in 2003, he tried something that seemed shocking at the time: bridging the gap between tech house and soulful house with his jerome sydenham collaboration, "sandcastles" (ibadan). at first, it didn't take: after playing the track at the wmc and getting a lackluster response he thought he had made a huge mistake: "i felt so bad, i thought i botched [it]?. but a couple of months later it caught on, and it was full on a year after its release." this delayed reaction would become a theme for ferrer's work over the next few years. right place, right time: it's just that everyone needed a bit of time to catch on. following "sandcastles," ferrer had hits with his ultra-minimal (only 12 parts) original production "son of raw" (ibadan) and remixes of blaze & barbara tucker's "most precious love" (defected) and fish go deep's "the cure & the cause," (defected) the latter of which saw ferrer taking a completely new approach to vocals. instead of a straight delivery, ferrer began to loop hooks in tandem, turning ordinary tracks into sing-along anthems. the success of these tracks?and more?led to the release of his king street sounds full-length, the world as i see it. as the title states, the record is all ferrer?lyrics, beats, melodies?and showcases nearly all of his myriad interests into one record, going from afro to gospel to tech to soul and back again. "i've always done my own thing," he says, "i've never tried to be like anyone else and you either like it or you don't. there's no in the middle for me." it was at this moment that ferrer knew that he had to go back to the drawing board one more time. enter objektivity. ferrer's newest imprint, this time done on his own, is yet another chapter in the ferrer narrative. what that sound is exactly remains to be seen, but it's going to be a lot of fun finding out. especially when he comes out with his next full-length, currently due for release in early 2009. just be sure to keep up. ferrer will be in the right place at the right time, but he's probably not going to be waiting for anyone to catch up. this event is expected to reach capacity. early arrival is strongly recommended. 21+ | no dress code www.myspace.com/lotussf | www.myspace.com/dennisferrer | www.myspace.com/djsmashreleases | www.deepblak.com | www.myspace.com/vincentkwok | www.myspace.com/morrissonmusic | www.**********/lotus_dennisferrer | www.mighty119.com | www.fusicology.com | www.wantickets.com

The Dim Mak Collection clothing line was launched in 2006. A new fashion range designed by Steve and his sister Devon Aoki is coming out in 2009. They've partnered with the founders/owners of Ksubi, George Garrow and Dan Single to release this range together. "We've been putting it together for two years, from the very early stages." Aoki told. Also with Dan Single and George Garrow, Ksubi will be partnering up and creating a Dim Mak sunglass line that will drop in 2009 as well. Aoki and friend Greger, the owner of Wesc, came up with the idea together to do the "Aoki headphones." They used different shades of green, because that was Aoki's favorite color at the time. Each season Aoki plans to design new headphones for WESC.Aoki also is endorsed by KR3W Apparel and Supra Footwear, where he develops and designs an entire range of clothing and shoes for both companies under his name.Aoki is a co-owner in a Korean BBQ restaurant Shin alongside Danny Masterson, Julian Casablancas from The Strokes, Mark Ronson, Laura Prepon, Jerry Butler, among others. He also had an Essential Mix that aired on BBC Radio 1 on August 2, 2008. He has recently remixed the track 'When The Wind Blows' that features on the Uk edition of the The All-American Rejects latest album When The World Comes Down. JOACHIM GARRAUD After having perfectionned his piano and percussions for seven years at the conservatory, he decided to move toward electronic music. Along with Laurent Garnier, he started as a DJ at the Boy, the Parisian club that first initiated the discovery of the techno phenomenon in France. He then successfully tried some music production with Maxximum radio station, number one national 100% dance radio station (CTL group). Becoming the pioneer of numerical music, he created his own recording studio in the middle of Paris, which allowed him to remix, compose or produce artists such as David Guetta, Jean-Michel Jarre, Paul Johnson, Deep Dish, David Bowie, Omd, Kylie Minogue, Mylène Farmer, Cassius, Ceronne, Moby, Robbie Rivera... and many more. Joachim developed a new concept, blending Deejaying and musical improvisation, thus giving a true concert, a unique live performance which soon gave him the opportunity to perform all over the World. Today, he is surrounded by a big community with the Space Invader mascot.

  22. Ruby Skye proudly presents Andy Moor on Friday, June 19th. Andy Moor will need no introduction to the majority of readers, currently sitting at number 18 in the world DJ poll, producer and remixer to the stars and a member of numerous acts including Leama & Moor, Tilt and Whiteroom to name a few. A mixture of hard work, determination and raw talent has catapulted Andy to the status as one of the most definitive and influential artists in the dance music scene today, although to pigeonhole him into any musical category would be a crime in itself. From learning his first piano piece at the age of five to mastering six musical instruments by the age of eleven, From spinning his first record at the age of thirteen onto rocking the worlds leading festivals in front of tens of thousands of people by the age of twenty one. Now, with a few more wrinkles at 28 years old, he is considered by many a veteran of the industry acquiring an ever growing army of loyal followers. Endlessly on Tour, Andy has been spreading his infectious grooves and beautiful melodies to every corner of the globe. Playing live at the worlds most prolific festivals and venues is where Andy gets chance to express his dedicated ear for uncompromising musical set structure. Andy’s tour schedule makes for a dizzy read, clocking up over half a million air-miles every year, yet he always returns straight home to the studio, not wanting to waste the Musical talent that has earned him Best Trance producer and Best Trance Track at the 2004 trance awards, Best Dance Record at the 2006 International Dance Music Awards (for the track ‘Air for Life’ in collaboration with Above and Beyond), a Grammy nomination in 2008 (for his remix of ‘Delerium - Angelicus’) along with numerous other accolades. The impressive list of artists to receive the Andy Moor remix touch include Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Paul Oakenfold, Brian Eno, Tiesto, Delerium and Arthur Baker to name but a few and as his tracks always add colour to club charts across the world. 2008 will see the emergence of the highly anticipated Andy Moor solo album, due for release under his own imprint AVA recordings, which follows on nicely from his 2005 album ‘explorer’ with Tilt, and the 2006 album ‘Common Ground’ with Leama & Moor. Andy has always kept his feet firmly on the ground, preferring to spend all of his energy and attention on the Music and letting everything else fall into place. With this attitude, talent and work rate it is no wonder Andy Moor is at the top of his game….. yet we are assured the best is still to come. nbsp;
