March 24, 2002 -- Gatien eyes giant new club

EMBATTLED club king Peter Gatien is gearing up to open a huge new nightclub.

Gatien has long had his eye on a huge, 40,000-square-foot space on West 28th

Street between 10th and 11th avenues known as The Foundry across from the

now-defunct Twilo club. It's so immense that many of the Macy's Day Parade

floats have been constructed there. Sources familiar with his plans say

Gatien wants to call the new superclub Thriller.

Gatien has weathered drug charges, attempted deportation, a tax-evasion rap

and bankruptcy. It cost him his two remaining clubs, the Tunnel on West 27th

Street and the Limelight on Sixth Avenue, which he sold to Gay & Lesbian

Nightlife Association President John Blair. But he's itching to get back

into the business and show the world he still has what it takes.

Since he's not a popular figure with city officials, Gatien is planning to

team up with the guys who run Crobar in Miami, insiders say, and have them

run the new venture for him.

Crobar owner Ken Smith has been a pal of Gatien's for years, and the pair

were recently spotted having a confab at L'Express on Park Avenue South. But

Smith's rep insists that while it's no secret he's planning to open a place

in New York, he's not going into business with Gatien.

Gatien recently took noted clubland interior designer Peter Sibilia - who's

done clubs like Gemini Lounge, Abaya, Sugar and the Roxy - on a tour of The

Foundry in an effort to get him to design the new club, insiders say, but

Sibilia declined. Sibilia could not be reached. Gatien's lawyer, Alan

    Klinger, did not return calls.

A rep for Community Board 4 says it's aware of the club plan and that Gatien

and the Crobar crowd are behind it, but declined further comment because the

    application hasn't come in yet.

"I think it's unbelievable that he believes that any community would allow

him to open a club," says former Gatien lieutenant Steve Lewis, who's

heading off to jail to serve a year's sentence for conspiracy to distribute

narcotics at Gatien's clubs. "I wouldn't rat him out and say what the

government wanted me to, and I don't mind going to jail, but he is not an

    innocent guy."

Lot 61 owner Amy Sacco, whose club Bungalow 8 is around the corner from the

Foundry space, says the community board "definitely won't" be in favor of

the new club, noting, "They just got rid of Twilo and Tunnel." And she says

Gatien may have some competition. "Scores is looking at the same space," she

    says.
