  5. the berlin love parade

    Did anyone here go to the Berlin Love parade? I saw a lot of news reports on it and some said crowds were down to around 750,000 people. I still think that amount of people is nice and cosy and not a bad sized party.

    The news reports also said it could be the last Berlin Love parade due to money problems. I hope not cos I hope to go next year, a lot of my mates have been to previous ones and they said it was brilliant!!

    to earlier post regarding disco kandi

    I quite like the disco kandi series as well. The latest remix magazine a new zealand dance magazine has a kandi sampler cd complied by mark doyle. I t has about 8 tracks and most of them are quite good. at least 3 new cds are on their way including a new beach house cd, disco kandi and a new base bar. Also in september hed kandi will release a cd for only the australian market as part of their annual tour of australia.

  9. Has anyone heard the new Metallica Album?

    here in the biggest selling newspaper in the country the reviewer gave the album a 2 out of 5- with the last sentence of the review we have heard it all before. The review says it lacks any kind of production. Normally i disregared critics but this reviewer is usually pretty spot on. The album is called st anger.

    The album has been postponed a week to increase publicity after dismal pre order copies stats were issued.

    actually the song is: running up that hill by kate bush v's infusion not illusion sorry i was tired.

    I first heard it at 2 tribes on march 10, first by a local dj and then by dave seaman later in the night, the roar from the crowd and my own response with this track lead me to believe this a bloody good tune.

    eurovision is like huge!! cant believe you have never heard of it. Its kind of crass however it makes for funny viewing. Lots of people have parties the night eurovision is on. I am in australia and it is always on prime time network tv. One of the biggest acts to win eurovision was abba in 1974.

    Heaps more acts have had hits around the world except prolly in the U.S. I bet the British wont be voting much for the french act this year!!

    First time I heard it was on commercial fm radio. Its a pretty popular and apart from the more underground clubs I hear it at most clubs.

    Not sure what clubs are like in your part of the world so I cant offer any suggestions

  20. Why Is Hip Hop More Popular Than House

    Adding further to what has been said I think drum and bass and jungle are far more interesting genres of music than hip hop. This genre is mainstream in the u.k and other countries around the world however in the U.S its regarded as underground.

    I am unsure why people think because it becomes commercialised it will ruin the whole scene. Sure it may become cheesy to an extent but it wont ruin good music.

    Keeping music underground results in small crowds and very few people spending money on it. This in turn results in club owners becoming very wary of anything different so they keep to the same, instead of exploring and experiamenting.

    In 1987 in melbourne australia people organised a party in a airport hanger playing an unusual style of music. 20,000 people turned up and this music was called house. If no one had turned up to this party I think it would have been several more years later before house music took off in Australia. In early 1988 several house records went to the top of the charts in australia. Likewise 1988/89 started the summer of love in the U.K. which quickly spread throughout europe.

    Last year I went to a party which was put on by the government in a street, with dj's at every main intersection playing house, trance, jungle, breaks and all sorts of dance music. This was free to the public and attracted an estimated 80,000 people. This is one of the best dance events I have been too.

    If the government here put on a similiar type event for hip hop it may attract perhaps 5000 people. I know hip hop is huge in the U.S and so is country music however for the rest of the world its not that big.

    I think because we had the dance music explosion several years ago we are more accepting of different types of music and our charts while full of commercial music, its full of all different styles of music. Some good some bad.

    Most of the charts are also compiled in a different way to the U.S. Point of sales at registars record the number of sales a record may have. In the U.S the charts are complied by mostly radio play. This is also why the american charts move so slow.

    I think their has to be a balance between commercial and underground to keep a scene healthy. Likewise a bigger house scene in the U.S and a little less hip hop would be a good thing.

    Although hip hop is huge in the U.S up until a couple of years ago its popularity had dropped in the rest of the world and dance music and all its genres was a lot more popular.

    I think if you travelled outside the U.S you would be surprised at how little hip hop music is played.

    The last couple of years hip hop has grown in popularity around the rest of the world. This is largely due to american record companies buying out smaller record companies in europe asia and australia. American record companies dont understand how dance music works and find it a lot easier to heavily promote american acts.

    Hip hop works quite well into the record companies formats. I t has street cred amongst youth and record companies can understand the politics behind it.

    Dance music is fickle and very fast moving. Many tracks are hits without going through a major record company.

    Record companies dont make much money from the sale of singles however albums make a lot more money for the companies. Hip hop acts make ideal albums where as dance music acts make one single and then depart and go onto other projects. The push of record companies to promote mixed albums such as global undergrounds, gatecrashers and the like are ways companies can make larger amounts of profits.

    Ten years ago it would be hard to find a mixed album however now you can just go to kmart or target and get global underground, cream or any ministry of sound release or a dance hits or something mixed by any dj.

    The popularity of hip hop is not because it is better than it use to be. It is just marketed a lot better.

    I wonder if dance music was pushed and promoted like hip hop and rnb was in the united states if house music would be filling your charts like it has in the rest of the world.

    reminds me of that popular saying- disco never died it just became house.

    A lot of people have been saying here that their has been no anthems. This maybe true however the other night I went to a club and the dj played A fine day by kirsty hawkshaw the James Holden remix and the response was amazing.

    The crowd of 3000 people just roared it was enuff to send tingles up the spine!! The resident dj stopped the track and 3000 people sang the words to the tune. When he kicked it back off again the hands in the air and cheering was amazing.

    Maybe its not an anthem but I think its pretty close to it.
