  5. http://www.ctnow.com/nightlife/hce-djculture.artoct22,0,2991880.story?coll=hce-headlines-entertain-top Electronica Evolution Coming Out Of The Raves And Dance Clubs, An Upscale DJ Culture Takes Root In Hartford October 22, 2006 By ERIC R. DANTON, Courant Rock Critic It's past midnight on a Friday night in an otherwise barren area of downtown Hartford, but there's a knot of well-dressed people on the sidewalk outside Room 960 on Main Street taking a break from the thumping music within. The chic little bar is a hot spot in the capital city's surprisingly strong electronic music scene, one that has transcended the underground rave culture of the late '90s to become, if not a mainstream source of entertainment, one that caters to a high-end clientele. Hartford, a city with a moribund rock scene that has trouble attracting cool up-and-coming bands, is hosting internationally acclaimed DJs and making a name for itself in the cutting-edge culture of electronic music. There's house music at Room 960, drum 'n' bass at Sully's Pub and enough devotees of each to keep the scene vibrant, albeit small. (House, an offshoot of the '80s post-disco dance-club scene, features deep four-beat bass grooves. Drum 'n' bass is fast-tempo music with rhythmic break beats tied to jazz, reggae and hip-hop.) "Sometimes, these little cities that you never thought would be great are fantastic, and everybody I've ever put there has loved it," says Emma Hoser, a New York booking agent who represents top-name DJs. Several of Hoser's DJs have performed in Hartford at events booked by budding promoter Bora Celik. Celik, 31, promotes "Bora Music" events every few weeks at Room 960 and, last summer, put together outdoor parties in Constitution Plaza. A software engineer who runs his own company in Avon by day, Celik spends his spare time poring over influential rankings in DJmag to identify talent he wants to bring to Hartford, and negotiating with agents to make it happen. One of his early coups was booking an Argentine DJ named Hernan Cattaneo, ranked No. 7 last year on the magazine's list. "Once I brought him, it was a chain reaction," Celik says. Other high-profile bookings have included Roger Sanchez and Gabriel and Dresden. Celik has also booked the rock band Bloc Party to perform a DJ set Nov. 18 after the group's performance earlier that night outside Boston. Electronic music has long percolated in Hartford's underground. The former Comet Club on Farmington Avenue hosted events in the '80s, and the Municipal Cafe on Main Street was something of a headquarters for the music in its various forms until it closed last year. And Hartford was home to all-night dance parties called raves in the late '90s, until concern over drug abuse led authorities to crack down on the events. "It's definitely cyclical," says Dave Dresden, half of the duo Gabriel and Dresden, who grew up in Stamford where he learned to DJ from another Connecticut resident, Moby. Dresden used to spin at Bar in New Haven and the short-lived club Velvet in Hartford, and he hosted an electronic music radio show on the former WMRQ-FM (104.1). "I really think that people are always going to go out and do drugs and dance around the campfire, so to speak," Dresden says from San Francisco, where he lives now. "And every so often, there comes a club owner or promoter who actually cares about the music, and when somebody takes the time to find out who the right DJs are to play their venue, and to make fliers and goes the whole nine yards, that's when it starts." Neither Bora Music events, nor the monthly drum 'n' bass party at Sully's, called Threshold, bears much resemblance to rave culture. That's by design, Celik says. "That's actually what I'm trying to get away from," he says. "A lot of the people who made that scene so popular weren't in it for the music. They were in it for other reasons, like drugs." Celik is targeting a different clientele: "It's a more mature crowd," he says. "They're more cultured, more international." It's also a slightly older crowd - late 20s to 40s - that can afford hefty cover charges and is looking for a more luxurious experience, such as bottle service at their tables. "It's not just music; it's a lifestyle," Celik says. "You have to know your target audience, and I do." And no wonder: He's a former DJ, who started spinning records in 1992 in his native Turkey. The passion continued when he moved to Connecticut in 1996 to study at the University of Hartford. Keeping current as a DJ is time consuming, though, and Celik soon found he didn't have the time. "DJing is very heavy on research," he says. "If you don't do the research, you don't get new music." Instead, he turned to promoting. "I still see it as my hobby, but it's a hobby that consumes a tremendous amount of time," he says. It's also one that his patrons say he's good at. "You just can't get this anywhere else," Tim Bonito says one Friday night, while waiting for DJ Donald Glaude to spin at Room 960. Bonito, 29, a mortgage broker from Springfield, says he comes at least once a month to Bora Music events, which he prefers over the fare at other clubs downtown. "Everything else is really commercial and Top 40," he says, making himself heard over the pulsating beats in the low-lit room packed with people. That's fine for Club Blu and NV downtown, but Celik seeks a more discerning crowd. "I'm not trying to make everyone happy," he says. "We have a niche. Our goal is quality first." Threshold also has a niche, and it's not likely to bubble into the mainstream, either. "Drum and bass is kind of like the most underground sound," says Stacy Lambert, a DJ who goes by Miz-Eyesis and co-founded Threshold in 2004 with DJs named Oneself and Torrential. "It's popular, but if you go to festivals, it's very much underground in terms of electronic music." Threshold has featured DJs from New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and London since its inception. Patrons range in age from 21 to 50, and Lambert says drum 'n' bass attracts a more relaxed crowd than the higher-end house music scene. "There's a certain laid-back attitude. It's more punk-oriented or Rastafarian," she says. "They don't want to look like they're coming out of GQ magazine." The popularity of the event - 80 people crammed into Sully's last month - has surprised its organizers. "We never expected it to last that long," says Lambert, who works as a consultant for ING. "We didn't realize there was such a want for drum 'n' bass in Connecticut." Lambert says Hartford is well-situated between Boston and New York, and the smaller scene can be an attraction. "It's a different place for these DJs to go to instead of another bustling busy city," she says. "It's an attractive thing to come to a place that's a little bit smaller and show people, `Hey, this is what I do.'" Although Bora Music and Threshold have helped establish Hartford's name on the electronic music circuit, there are limits to how large the local scene can grow. "It's very difficult to get my international guys to play there, because they come over for one weekend, maybe two, so I have two Fridays and two Saturdays, and it's really important to get them to play the major markets, like New York, Los Angeles, Miami," says Hoser, the booking agent. Yet she credits Celik for working hard to overcome Hartford's non-image, and says his events rival those in bigger cities booked by more established promoters. "I hope Bora continues doing it, because some of the bigger cities in America aren't as good as Hartford," she says. Celik has no illusions that Bora Music events at Room 960 will transform Hartford into an electronic music capital. He just likes throwing parties. "I don't think what I'm doing is going to convert Hartford into this great dance-music Mecca of New England," he says. "That would be great, but it's not realistic." Contact Eric R. 6. After last months successful "Darkness Falls" edition, the THRESHOLD Collective decided to change it up a bit and do a celebration to the wonderful sounds of Liquid, Drumfunk, Dubwise, Atmos, and melodic jungle. Sexy dancing or sexy cuddling to the beats on the dancefloor to orgasmic rhythms... Check it out as this edition is not to be missed... Miz-Eyesis (THRESHOLD - CT) It's been a while since Miz-Eyesis has spun at THRESHOLD and she's back bringing the masses some soulful sounds as well but filled with Amens of course. Taking a cue from the song "I'm Bringing Sexy Back" and closing out the night Miz will drop some sensual melodies that will not only make you feel as though you are in love, but also at peace as well. From classic Atmospheric to cutting edge Drumfunk, Aural Pleasure will be the name of the game this night and she will bring a memorable set for all the heads... Don't miss it! 12. Aug 4th: FRONTLINE PRESENTS BREAKAGE (BASSBIN RECORDINGS, UK) Breakage (Bassbin, UK) From www.upfrontdc.com Born in Slough in 1982, James moved to Buckingham at the age of 6, before finally settling in London when he was 11. In his own words, he lead "a pretty normal life," listening to a vast range of music. "Everything from. [pauses] everyone! Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, T Rex, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin. NWA, Bob Marley. Tenor Saw - he was ruff! - old sound system tapes. everything, man! Portishead Live in New York never leaves my stereo!" By the age of 12, James was already making his first forays into the world of music production. "My cousin Leroy used to live down by Heathrow Airport, and I used to travel down there every other Saturday and stay there overnight making little shitty tunes on his crappy computer! Well at the time it was good; it was Fast Tracker 2, and you could make music on this little blue and black program! So big up Leroy!" Before being introduced to the dnb scene by some people he knew at school, James used to tamper with breakbeats - as he puts it, "I was some young 12, 13, 14 year old Prodigy wannabe, and a hip hop wannabe. Then I started doing dnb." Bursting onto the scene in 2001 with an explosive, unofficial remix of Doc Scott's classic Here Come The Drums, which tore up many a dancefloor, including the legendary Metalheadz Sunday Sessionz. The remix picked up by Reinforced for release on it's legendary Enforcers series of picture disks; the relationship with this label continued with singles as Solar Motion (in collaboration with Dsyfa), an EP with Threshold of Special Branch, and two solo EPs. It was via Special Branch that James made contact with the Inperspective family. Forrester introduced James to Equinox, knowing the two would hit it off. The rest is, as they say, history. Inperspective signed Comatose and Trance, and James went on to revisit Equinox's Acid Rain, a piece of Amen science that James rates as one of his favourite pieces of dnb, alongside such classics as Rufige Crew's Kemistry - "Probably the best dnb tune in the world EVER!" His ability to turn his hand to any style he fancies is perhaps James' strongest point. From the dubby stylings of So Vain and Out of Reach, through the liquid leanings of his collaborations with Metalheadz resident DJ Flight as Alias, and onto the pure breakbeat science he unleashes on Inperspective, James excels at whatever he turns his hand to. "I make all different kinds of stuff, there's no one style! My style is unorthodox!" As with the other Inperspective artists, though, James' personal favourites are signed to the I. "I'm so happy with my Acid Rain VIP Final Chapter remix. That and Drowning." In addition to his collaborations with DJ Flight, James plans to work with Equinox in the near future, and would love to work with other artists such as Tangerine Dream and James Lavelle. 13. Aug 3rd: THRESHOLD @ SULLY'S PUB PRESENTS LIONDUB +liondub+ from www.djliondub.com Music is often referred to as a universal language, however there are many dialects and few artists are able to freely express themselves in more than one. Young producer, dj, promoter, and engineer, Liondub is capable of inspiring new translations of cultural and concious music through the fusion of musical and modern beliefs. Striving to embrace as many styles and sounds as possible, Liondub's seamless mixes and heavy productions feature a strong dose of reggae, dub and trip hop, as well as more divergent styles of contemporary dancehall, ragga jungle and hip hop. Liondub grew up a native New Yorker, frequently travelling to Jamaica, exposing himself to the artistic movements of hip-hop and reggae soundsystems at a very young age. Fueled by the influences of DJ Red Alert, Chuck Chillout and jamaican sounds Jah Love, Stur Gav, Volcano and Downbeat, Liondub was inevitably inspired to take up the science of turntable mixing and the art of building rythms. Spinning records, he developed a single, distinctive voice that could speak many musical languages, and build cultural bridges. Now, that musical voice has matured and earned him worldwide acclaim. By steadily producing tracks and mixing, he is re-shaping the way many listen to reggae music. DJing conscious reggae music, dancehall, hip-hop and jungle since 1991, Liondub is touring the US playing with groups and artists like Johnnie Osbourne,Terry Ganzie, The Wailers, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Sound Tribe Sector Nine, DJ Krush, Ras Kush of Black Redemeption Sound, The UK Steppas and Rob Paine of Worship Recordings. His most recent performances include Touring with Steel Pulse and opening up for Dancehall Star Sizzla, Jungle legends R.A.W., Dara and Cassien of Legend. When he's not touring, he can be found lacing tracks in the studio with many of Reggae's up and coming rising stars such as Norrissman, Richie Spice and Fragga Ranks as well as Jungle veterans like MC Navigator. Liondub represents numerous artists and dj's within a comprehensive artist agency and is producing an impressive catalog of conscious music at home and abroad. Expect some serious dubplate business and seamless turntablism when Liondub steps to the decks.
