  2. I would like to get some of your thoughts on this- I think it can go 2 ways- either he compromises and takes on a more ktu approach- or he extends his current radio show and introduces New York to more of his international style of soulful, percussive, and latin based selections... Nonetheless- NY radio is heading for a definite change.... IMO.... your thoughts...
  3. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “The DJ has been an invaluable instrument in treating uneducated club goers. Therefore, there is no question that the relationship between music and clubbers will blossom. As JoJo Flores continues to rebut the sins of our untrained mind and souls, the combination will demonstrate the effects of music therapy". ---The Original Kid Colione Ladies and Gents, I bring to you “Therapy @ Gryphon- a review with the kidâ€â€¦. After battling the tremendous traffic at the Rock, I finally made it to the office at approximately 00:25. The attendant at the front desk notified me that they were no longer accepting walk-ins as of 00:00. He mentioned that although they were no longer accepting walk-ins, I could be seen that night for a fee. Being that I was in need of my weekly therapy, I opted to go ahead and pay the damn fee. The price you pay for being late… Oh, well. I immediately made way to the therapy hall and was surrounded by an extremely large gathering of rejoicing patients. I quickly approached the surgical desk and met with 4 notable professionals known as: The General Surgeon himself- JoJo Flores along with his immediate advisor Dr. Swank, and of course the hosts of the evening and renowned scholars, The Next Generation. Dr. Aaron offered me a drink and ensured me that such nonsense at the front desk would never occur especially, not on his watch. He then proceeded to fill me in on details pertaining to the NG’s future projects and goals. I am not at liberty to disclose much of the information per our convo but I will say this- be on the look out. As for my first drink of the evening, I had a shot of tequila and a tequila-coke to chase. Not really a choice of most but that’s how the kid does it… While sipping on my chaser, I could not help but to notice the sounds being produced by the General. It was based on a mixture of Latin/afro/deep/percussive and arabatic elements. It made me reminisce of my time spent at the Bedside Supper Club in Bangkok, Thailand.- but when I opened my eyes, I quickly realized that I was no longer in the sin city capital of the world cause everyone was fully dressed… After but a few moments, the shot began to kick in and that’s when I took the floor. Aligning my self front and centered to the booth as always, I really began to feel the tunes. The mixing was smooth and volume well balanced. He methodically raised the level and brought it down a notch as to not disrupt the current mood. He created a continuous vibe as by which he would raise the level then lower it. He would then raise it pass the previous level of rising then lowered it but still being above the previous level of lowering. (somebody explain that in shorter words) Along with the live percussions at play, one could only hope for the level to be once again raised and that only track to be introduced but yet keeping with in his building block. And then he did... Yes, sir, he dropped the unexpected, “casa salsaâ€- colione’s dub re-edit of the current Soul purpose -“Salsa Houseâ€. Hoping that he would further intensify the current vibe, he slightly disappointed by again lowering the level. He continued this path throughout the evening at which the patients so graciously enjoyed at a steady rate. At about 0300, Dr. Mikkel of NG took over and began to deliver some power latin funk at which this point was needed. From there came some vocal electro, bass funk and funky tribal- and as always, the Next Generation has quite a few patients in the reserve offices. Therefore, it is necessary that in keeping with the traditions of their brotherhood, they deliver properly. In conclusion, I must remain impartial to fairness for it has not a name in this game. But with reason, JoJo Flores stood his ground and played “his†set. In all honesty, I too hoped for a change rather than a steady dose of percussion throughout the night. But mind you, he did not come to play the expected or reach out from his element and compromise his method of approach. He simply came to perform his duties and to do what he does best. And that ladies and gents, was to perform musical therapy. Now, some may oppose my views and state that the General Surgeon should have played for the Rock and bring about more funky or progressive flavors if you will. I say, in due time ladies and gents, in due time. And as he continues to learn the needs of his patients, he will. But for now, as so thoroughly advertised, let it be known that the Surgeon’s visit was a well paid one. Gotsoul anyone? The kid…..
  4. Afternoon ladies and gents, shall I began today's review with a quote... “If a DJ is called upon to destroy the patio, he should annihilate even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should obliterate the patio with such thoroughness that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great patio destroyer who did his job wellâ€. --the Original Kid Colione It’s 0610 as we parked whilst being cautioned by a downtown alley cat that I may receive a parking citation upon exiting. Paying no mind, I had one mission. And that mission was to rejoice along side my fellow patio mates to the sounds of the destroyer. Upon entry, we experienced as I would say an uffed up situation… Overseeing ‘Slamming Shaun’s’ id situation, patio on lock, and just a handful of children at play to the closing act of Cedric, I was not pleased with the current state of affairs. But understanding the game, I figured that I would make due with what I had. Under the circumstances as a club manager, I would have done the same in securing the patio. First and foremost, I am sure that they were exercising proper safety measures by trying their hardest to prevent a fire hazard. Secondly, which I think may have taken the better half of the argument, is from a business point of view, them boyz were going to make sure they got every dime of the $78k (so they say) they invested into the destroyer. Cedric on the other hand should have taken that opportunity to keep his act going by at least playing a little more appealing. In my opinion, when you have a situation where by the patio is secured and everyone’s focus is to get onto the patio but their only option is to remain in a deep, dark, loud, and ¾ empty main room, some ear candy would have been definitely more than appropriate. But, I am not the experienced, only the embracer. After a painstaking and dreadful hour of anticipation, we finally made it up the place to be surrounded by a slough of unfamiliar faces in utter delight. I proceeded to walk the 4 corners as though to get a good feel of the crowd but mostly to generate a feeling of assertion in us actually making the patio after undergoing such stress below. After a few looks, acknowledgements, and chin-ups, the feeling was brought back and it was time to play; I was on for the killing. But I tell you what ladies and gents, I bobbed and weaved through the crowd like Ellis Roger on game day. I waited patiently for that perfect opportunity. I stood behind observing their every movement hoping that one would fall victim. And then it happened, my prey became weakened by the lack of conditioning and jumped off the blocks. The kid literally rose to the occasion and claimed that 2x2 area as though it had my name on it. Of course I executed my occasional knee-to-head movements to those sitting but a quick “sorry†surely excused me of any intentional harm or damage. Although while up there, I really felt the vibe, not so much the tunes, but the overall happiness of the crowd and my fellow block mates. Shortly thereafter, I decided to relinquish my position due to the lack of sweetness that Eric delivered to my ear. Mind you, I will always say an “M†party is strictly for the vibes and I must also express that Erick is probably the most passionate dj I have come across. The man trully loves what he does and continues to show it. But this time, he had me for a mere 1hr and could not carry me further. Now, that is not to say that he did not deliver properly for another. But after being out all night, I wished for a little more feeling behind the tracks. For the time in which I was there, there was a mixture of tribe, tech, etc. But there was just something missing in which at present time I can’t really point out. Maybe after reading some other reviews, I may come across that missing element. But in all, as I am always so thrilled by an overly packed patio, I had a great time. With a great atmosphere, passionate folks that don’t give a what having a good time attitude and are just to have a good time, I have rejoiced… even with a parking citation. Until next review, it’s the kid signing off…

  9. Thanks buddy.... those words really mean a lot...
  10. Please be advised that the following review is based on mostly the patio set and is in accordance with the opinions of its writer….. I got there around 0500 and entered the main room to the sounds of the S-man Roger Sanchez… Although loud- a little too loud, the sound was clear and had a tremendous kick…. For about an hour, me and the ole lady endured what is known to be as some groovy-progressive tribe with minimal vocals. Being that late into his set, I could only have imagine what he produced earlier on… 0600 came around and I bided farewell to the ole lady as she had to part for work. I then proceeded to the patio after Roger had relinquished the decks to Cedric… To my surprise as we were granted access in to the patio, Roger was gearing up to retain is supremacy as the peoples choice of “patio kingâ€. We all gathered like children in a playground as Roger tweaked the sounds and prepared to dish out his treats…. Once he gave the thumbs up to the sound engineer, I knew that the time had come to commence a journey into the lands of elation…. Sounds: Roger began his patio set with some deep percussive and quickly moved on to some Latin funk.. By 0700, he was well into some power soul funk. I was almost sure that he would have allowed the crowd to recuperate from the annihilation he administered in the main room but I was wrong and a little bothered at that. As oppose to his previous patio sets, I felt that he was in some type of rush to distribute more main room sounds. I don’t know- maybe it was what the crowd had called for but in my opinion, he should have held back a bit more until 0900 or so before dropping his signature groovy- tribe rhythms. But instead, he continued until about 0800 or so with plenty of recognized tracks but again playing mostly their progressive -black label mixes.. From about 0830 to close, it was low-bass funk to progressive-vocal-tech tribe with the Makita cordless chainsaw on low throttle (thank god) Now, as far as the set went and wanting him to hold back a bit, that is my opinion … I was just in need of some good power Latin funk and some of that good old power soul house before moving on to bigger and better things. But at the end of the day, it’s all about touching each and every soul in the place to be and this is exactly what roger did- with the little time that he had. He gave everyone their own taste of choice and that is what makes him so special- being consistent with is track selections and not being stagnant in programming… Although this time he did not look back once he brought out the big guns…. Straight- up peak-hour madness…. Overall, the crowd was extremely passionate and pleasant. Friendly faces with great attitudes. The ladies as usual were up to part and that is all I will disclose about that topic at present time. The bartenders tended to be a little shady on the returns- count your cash people… Happens to me every time @ space… But nonetheless, I still leave a tip to show them off with a little something professional…. Until the 26th with Eric the M- illest rilo.. it’s the kid signing off….
  11. I suppose the threads were combine... Thanks-
  12. First and foremost, I must pay my respects to the entire djs list- Doc, Jae vynel, Diga, that performed throughout the course of the night at Nocturnal... A special shout to Jae for the passes and acknowledging me through the night in hopes that I would enjoy it as much as possible.- Great reception! And so I begin.... I decided that last night was going to be a solo night and be pretty much on the dancing tip whilst observing the scene. As I arrived a few after 0100, I was able to enter via guest list even though the time had expired. Much appreciation towards the door staff for they are a very professional group maintaining awareness yet understanding at all times.. Upon entry, the roof top had not opened yet and mister jae vynel took control of the sounds enticing the crowd with some power soul, old school funk and junk. Not particular to his style, but as any good resident, he was preparing for the legendary Doc M- so it has been said…..Shall it be written. The lower main room was pleasantly filled with individuals out to have a great time. I observed many of “groups†which allowed for the utmost of proper entertainment. The bartenders were friendly and quick on order. I purchased a Heineken for a mere $7- supposedly after hours…. I walked up to the second level to find an atmosphere of pure enlightenment. Ladies smiling, fellows relaxing, mister jae vynel and friends behind the decks rejoicing over a bottle of champagne to celebrate his continuous battle of conditioning nocturnal’s sound, stage, and lighting. At approximately 0145- Doc Martin assumed his role as proprietor whilst establishing himself as the well expected and honorable guest of the evening. He staged his cigarettes and vinyl cleaner and became familiar with the audio equipment. Prior to going into details as to describing the Doc, I would like to advise you that Nocturnal truly needed to do a better job in scouting a dj to perform at their venue this past evening. Reason being is that although the doc expresses himself in an exemplary fashion through his djin skills, in my most humble opinion; his track selection did not compliment that of Noctornal’s. His style was that of a European received/retro clash of old west coast funk and tribal. Tunes that you would find in the cellar or basement in the UK or Eastern Europe’s clubs- where they enjoy old school sounds. If I could describe his selection for the evening with two words, it would be “house partyâ€. The sounds became as though repetitive with the same driven kicks and baselines… But I must acknowledge that his mixing and programming techniques are of course beyond reproach. Whatever the case maybe, I did have some moments and I am sure the clubbers enjoyed themselves as well for the sounds were groovy. But, I can’t imagine him as a repeat guest- especially after what I am about to explode on to you………. End of article I
  13. Article II- Without hesitation……. At approximately 0347, the word on the street passed on by jae himself, was that the rooftop would open shortly. Well, as any of you may or may not know, noc’s rooftop is where it’s at nowadays if you want to get away from the hard stuff and fake the funk like your worth a million bux. With Jae spinning the best of power soul and Latin funk. And Diaga adding progressive, tribal and the up and coming electric/base funk as I forewarned that they needed, it makes for a perfect collabo. Whether it was intentional or not to follow my advice, the rooftop is officially in fully operational status with the exception of a current lack of guidance and leadership. Here is where it gets ugly At 0400, the word was fully passed and the rooftop had now been fully operational. Me being tired of the stagnant sounds of Martin, I opted for a change of pace with the hopes of being able to drift back and forth. I arrived upstairs to a ¾ packed rooftop with jae unloading with Danzel’s â€pump it up†(ropero’s mix). I was truly amazed and astonished. Not by the amount of patrons or superb quality of sound, but of the mere fact that no respect was being extended to our current legendary guest. But still, I could not imagine why jae was banging it out so quickly. It made absolutely no sense until after about 15 minutes into the opening rooftop set, Diaga took control and began pumping their asses with tribe and base funk. Whatever the case may be that Diaga took over so quickly, let’s not stray from the fact that these boys are under no control whatsoever. Mind you, I am not holding the djs accountable for their actions. As a dj, (State side mentality) it is pure instinct to get yours and do whatever you need to do in order to achieve your personal goals. Even if it means eating out another dj…… As I stated previously, that is the way of the dj and therefore I am not holding them responsible. I am going after the club promoters and or music directors in which I see have not been able to grab a hold of their men and take control of the situation. As far as I am concerned, Nocturnal demonstrated the least bit of common courtesy and respect towards their guest. They down right ignored his presence and went along with their own program…. As appose to the director taking control and guiding their men (djs and bouncers) into allowing minimal entry to the rooftop to allow for a mutual transition, and give the guest a proper closing, they instead opted to allow the masses to enter and began plundering the crowd with the latest in peek hour tunes. After 18 minutes (approx -0418) of being on the rooftop, I went downstairs to find an empty main room………. The resident djs did not even have the common courtesy to bid their guest a farewell as commonly done all over the world…….. I have lived in 5 countries during the past recent 8 years. Not visited, but lived for a year a time and partied with the best of them. And I can assure you that hospitality goes a long way…………… I leave you with this- Doc Martin may not be the best dj in the world, but he surely knows some of the best djs in the world. Let’s hope it does not come back to bite you in the ……….
