  2. Jenö Fueled by an enigmatic mystique, Jenö has remained one of San Francisco’s most beloved and sought after DJs for over two decades. Developing a passionate love for music from an early age he spent several years as a punk musician & songwriter, before discovering djing and falling into the vibrant London warehouse party scene of the mid 80s. Once Acid House fever hit the UK, Jenö never looked back, becoming known for his heady Whoosh parties, and his involvement in the early days of the notorious Tonka Sound System. Inspired by Tonka’s cheeky f**k the rules attitude, and in search of a more psychedelic groove, Jenö, along with his British cohorts Garth, Markie & Thomas headed to San Francisco in the early 90s. This was the beginning of the now world renowned Wicked Crew, who were instrumental in firing up the SF dance music scene with their now legendary “Full Moon” parties. These wild & free outdoor gatherings were the foundation for an eclectic and soulful underground dance scene, and the driving force of the growing rave community on the West Coast. By the mid 90s, Jenö‘s musical talents and commitment to the dance floor had helped inspire and define a new “San Francisco sound,” bringing international attention to the city’s burgeoning dance music scene. With all eyes on San Francisco, DMC sought out Jenö’s talents for a mix on their prestigious CD series “United DJs of America.” Joining the ranks of legends Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Little Louie Vega and Doc Martin, he put together a mix of fresh local music and classic house sounds that helped put San Francisco firmly on the dance music map. In 1995, he and the Wicked Crew took things to the next level, importing a custom made Tony Andrews designed Turbosound system from the UK. With Wicked very much in demand there was nothing else to do but hit the road, piling into a beautifully restored 1947 Grayhound bus with their own band of merry pranksters, delivering their soulful psychedelic sounds with a rock’n’roll attitude that took the U.S by storm. The touring continued through the late 90s, including some unforgettable stops at Burning Man, Reggae on the River, and even a Jane’s Addiction concert in 2001. As the new millennium approached, Jenö took his talents to the studio and began producing his own unique take on dance music. He met all expectations with several remixes on fellow Wicked DJ Garth’s Greyhound label, including the internationally acclaimed “Stormy Weather” remix of Rocket’s “People.” This was followed by remixes on Cheeky, Turnaround Sound, NRK & others. Jenö’s production talents aren’t limited to the dance floor, having worked on some dark brooding indie music in recent years, and currently producing live acid house for his monthly “Cult of the Acid House” party. In 2004, Wicked disbanded after 13 years of amazing collaboration. Undeterred Jenö and Garth have kept the spirit alive with their regular Back2Back appearances up and down the West Coast; a fun loving and boundary pushing musical romp through the last 40 years of dance music. In 2011, Wicked reformed with a “Twenty Years of Disco Glory,” reunion tour encompassing 13 cities across the country. The success of the tour has put a vital missing piece back into the global dance community. Jenö’s mythical mixing talents have translated far and wide with a diverse international cult following. He has demonstrated these talents on the decks in the premier clubs across the globe, including the legendary Twilo in NYC, The End, Fabric & Ministry of Sound in London, Unit in Tokyo and the Rex Club in Paris. Jenö continues to perform & present music with a unique and psychedelic perspective, djing regularly again across the US, as well as hosting his own musically mischievous cult radio show – Noise from the Void, broadcast bi-monthly with the changing cycle from Full Moon & New Moon. It was at this party, he would meet up with his future partner in crime, "DJ Ghost" along with his future production company. In 94', Frank Nitty and two promoters from "Elmo" started up a production company called "Small World Productions". Together they threw numerous parties at the infamous warehouse located at 16th and Harrison or also known as the "Hayes Theater". Among these parties were "It's a small world", and "Indonesia". The line-ups for these parties consisted of "DJ Dan", "Donald Glaude", "Simon", "Jeno", "Frank Nitty" and "DJ Ghost". "Indonesia" was such a success, that it became a weekly Wednesday nightclub and was moved to club "DV8". Frank Nitty and Small World Productions had split up and gone there separate ways in 1995. Frank Nitty went on continuing to spin at numerous parties. In October of 95', Frank Nitty threw a party on his own called "Planet E" which was his most successful solo adventure. It was in May of 96' that Frank Nitty and DJ Ghost were billed as a four-turntable act at a party called "Enchantment". This act had later gotten them booked for a party called "Megga Buzz". In June of 96', Frank Nitty threw "Indonesia 2 The Reunion" which was Indonesia's two-year anniversary. The party had a small turnout but had a good vibe. The line up consisted of the regulars at the weekly Wednesday Indonesia in 94', such as "Jeno", "Frank Nitty", "DJ Ghost" and "Kwashi". In September, Frank Nitty and DJ Ghost played at "Megga Buzz" on four-turntables at the infamous rave warehouse, "HomeBase" in Oakland, California. Their performance together was instant chemistry that it astonished the crowd in overwhelming excitement. Soon afterwards, Frank Nitty joined Ghostribe and stopped promoting parties. From 1997 to 1999, Frank Nitty and DJ Ghost playing their now famous 4 turntable act rocked countless massives at the HomeBase warehouse. In 99', Frank Nitty created his alter ego "Danja" playing jump up drum and bass with partna "Spek". Danja's first release was "Dangerous Muzik". Danja and Spek then went on to collaborate on a CD called "JungleGround". At the end of 99', a new member was added to the Ghostribe Krew, "MC Ragga Banton". MC Ragga Banton began to work with Danja and Spek using his dance hall ragga style over hip hop flavored drum and bass. In 2000 Frank Nitty got involved with a radio show that opened up the airwaves to underground music. Hosted by Wild 94.9's St. John , Frank Nitty and the Ghostribe Krew rock the funky beats every other Friday night.by 2001 the radio show HouseNation was the #1 mix show in the bay area. In 2003 Frank Nitty hung up his headphones and went on hiatus. In 2007 Frank Nitty started a skateboard company ironically named Ghostribe Skateboards. In 2010, after a 7 year hiatus, Frank Nitty rejoined the cast of HouseNation and was featured on 99.7 NOW every Saturday night up until the end of 2012. In 2011 Frank Nitty, Ross FM and Krishna Lee formed Cloud 10 Events and began portfolio of successful event projects such as WOMP, Stereo Love, Womp Island 420 and BPM. In 2014, after 21 years in the SF Scene, we find Frank Nitty holding down residency at the most prominant weekly events (Wednesday Nights) EPR & (Sunday Nights) Sunset Arcade. Have spun nearly every genre, have vacillated between taking this very seriously and not giving a fuck. It is more than a hobby, this is integrating an artistic conversation spanning the globe and it is my passion. This particular conversation we’ve been having in the Deep (house/tech/breaks) arena is particularly dope, and I’m excited to be a participant again by spinning & producing that which moves my ass and soul, and raises my hands to the sky. Mixing is my zen-state. It isn’t an intentional act as much as it communion with sound, with the muse.I don’t plan Sets. My mantra is the ‘right song at the right time’, and you’re never going to answer that question until you’re in the moment. I kicked the vinyl habit in ‘05, but I still use CDJs.. You can hear the excitement in a live-mixed set, when there’s no net, when the DJ is a sneeze away from a trainwreck. I like a slippery beat or two, to flash your cards, to show this is real, this is Now, and we’re deep in it, together. I also only like to mix deep, 3 mins or so. It isn’t deep music unless you mix it deep, over your head in sounds, dancing with them as if Tai Chi, rolling them into another as if an Akido master. The tracks dictate how they want to be mixed, the moment dictates what energy wants to emerge next; a DJ isn’t there to be intentional, we’re supposed to be receptive. You can hear the difference. It was during the latter that he accidentally discovered the sound of Drum & Bass while in Berlin on a European tour. James was so blown away by this sound; he shortly sold all of his music equipment to buy a sampler, turntables and a mixer. The first two years were rough as he knew no one involved in DNB, only a local Santa Cruz radio show called 'The Metallic Blurp,' hosted by the Argon Records crew. James, on a whim, emailed the radio show to ask if he could meet up with other like minds. There he would meet the other two members that would form the 3-piece, Red Army. Together, they would shortly set dance floors on fire with releases on Skunkrock, Argon, Phuturo and eventually, N2O. The N2O deal soured on the crew, and it was beginning to be harder to work in the studio as James relocated to Sacramento, Joaquin would move back to San Diego to begin his film directing career and Justin would start what is now known as one of the largest electronic groups right now, The Glitch Mob. This left James as the soul output for the Red Army moniker. While getting nibbles for releases from a few labels, 05-09, saw a hard time on DNB altogether. Labels were switching to digital formats and vinyl was becoming obsolete, folding a great deal of labels, including ones that were planning on new Red Army releases. These tunes still have never seen the light of day. In 2009, James got serious again about the production side of the music and slowly started to release again on Simplify Recordings and Onset Audio, two Seattle based labels who are solely responsible for getting his music back out on the dance floors. Flash forward to the present, Red Army is now being released on Turbine Music (both digitally and some soon to be vinyl releases), Ground Mass, Onset Audio (responsible for 7 of his current releases) and a slew of support from some of the scene's veterans and up and comer's like Bailey, Dexta, Maouq, Stunna, Spindall, Homemade Weapons, Clima, Interline, Gremlinz, Reza, to name a few. In the early 90's he joined the Snowball Collective from NYC and DC and went on to throw some of the most-talked (to this day) underground and weekly parties in Washington DC. In 1998 he moved to San Francisco where he has continued to dj and hone his talent to this day. His sound is an amalgam of 22+ years of musical influences which has been described as Deep Garage Tech. His sets incorporate Deep Tech, Garage, Breaks and Techno into a seamless musical journey deep rooted in the past whist always keeping his finger on the pulse of the future. 22. ONIONZ ‘BURNT’ (CAT NO: ESR 100004) 1. Original Mix 2. Ted Patterson Remix 3. Brian Zentz Remix Dj Onionz, renowned for his immovable dedication to music, makes another addition to his diverse array of productions bringing a new soundscape on his latest release titled ‘Burnt’ on Electrik Soul Recordings. A smooth blend of percussion, luscious syths and a smattering of acid give this release with its pan pipe sound a transcending effect on the listener Dj Onionz last two releaes has impressed many of the present heavyweights in the industry including Laurent Garnier, Dubfire, MoS Radio, DJ Mag, iDJ and a long list of others. Ted Patterson mix is a stormer in the Lil Louis’s French kiss vibe. This peak time mix provided by one of NY's most loved djs is stunning edition to the ‘Burnt’ package. This driving electronic groove with a lead hook coming in and out of Ted’s mix is the softness balancing the hardness of the driving synth. Brian Zentz mix holds a deeper more melodic feel to it with 303 acid lines done by one of the most established techno producers of all time. An ethereal journey in sound shows Ted’s techniques as an audio alchemist, resulting in a ‘floating on air’ feel throughout. Support: Luke Solomon: love the original like a small flower.... 23. In 2001, Justin Johnson & Chris O'Connor (3PO) launched a brand new label from the depths of the lower east side in New York City called Cable Recordings. At the time, Chris and Justin were managers at Satellite Records and were roommates in a Brooklyn loft near Bushwick. Their mission was to connect all the sounds that they loved into their own sound. Their first offering “Stolen†was influenced by their surroundings, their peers, their DJ gigs, and their love for bangin' house music. They took the dirtiness of the subways, the grime of the sidewalks, and the magnificence of the skyscrapers and turned them into a stompin' Tribal House stormer, which embodied the sound of the dance floors of New York City at that time. The B-Side featured an amazing remix from long time friend and collaborator John Selway whose progressive Tribal Techno sound had already taken the world by storm. Indeed, it was Selway's remix that helped bring the spotlight to Cable by being licensed to mix compilations on Fabric (Slam), Ultra (Taylor), and Moonshine (Dave Aude), as well as being featured in an episode of Showtime's 'Queer As Folk'. Shortly after its release, DJ-Sets.com grabbed it and brokered remixes from Angel Alanis and Len Faki, and gave the tracks even more exposure. Eight years later, the remixes are FINALLY available digitally. Available at these fine retailers: Track it Down iTunes Join us on Facebook Join us on Sound Cloud Join us on Twitter[/b Coming soon: Justin Johnson "Sustainability" 3PO "I Like It - EP" DJ Nomad NYC & Quentin Harris "Lights Out - Remixes Part Two" Justin Johnson & 3PO "New York Stories - The Remixes" feat. remixes by Lee Coombs and more.
