Its been a few years, but house/tech producer and label boss returns to NYC for a special intimate set at the dark vinyl like Club LOVE.
Rui Da Silva
Producer, DJ, record label boss, musical innovator.
Rui Da Silva is an electronic music producer. He runs
Kismet Records, his own, successful, independent music
label. He DJs all over the world.
Rui has been involved in music since he was a kid and
in the music business since he set up the Kaos label
in Portugal in the early 90s.
Rui recorded for the label, turning his love of
partying into club hits with Underground Sound Of
Lisbon.
In 1999 he moved to London in a search for new
challenges. He set up Kismet Records and started
recording under his own name.
In 2001 his music leapt from club to radio when his
song Touch Me became an international number one
single.
Today he continues to produce club tracks and
experimental electronic music always, as he puts it,
“trying to change the sound and evolve”.
Kismet is still going strong in the digital age with a
mission to “help new upcoming talent to break into the
electronic music scene”.
Rui’s formative years, growing up in Portugal, were
spent listening to music and one-deck DJing at
parties. Early influences included Tones On Tail,
Talking Heads, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno. “But when I
was 16 or 17 I realised that DJing wasn’t as cool as Producing so for the next few years i focused on making beats”
After that he started playing bass in a band.
“That was frustrating as I was the only one into
turning up for the rehearsals.”
Then, the revelatory experience, he started listening
to early house from the US and the UK.
“I decided to sell the bass and amp and buy a Roland
909 (drum machine) and a akai S950 (Sampler) and start creating music. I liked
the way it was all about the music and nothing about
image.”
From there it was only a small step to becoming a
producer, party animal, and label boss.
And the future? More production of course.
“If I don’t do music I feel agitated.”
And more new ideas.
“Trying to learn a little bit more. Making music is
like cooking, you must plan it, and you need to source
the right ingredients. But if you cook all the time
you can start experimenting. The best part of the
creative process comes from mistakes but to make a
track you must also be organised, it’s the pull
between these two poles that makes a great song.”

The Egyptian-themed bi-level eatery-lounge features twisted house beats, with an array of local spinners (and the occasional out-of-towner) playing dirty house sounds all night long. This week Oliver Garcia + KIWI will be dropping a funked-up style of tech-house all night long.
OLIVER GARCIA starts playing in 1994 with electronic music LPs. This led him to house music very early and also to house club culture. His Latin spirit and his club experience sets him aside from other DJs. Oliver Garcia brings together different influences: Frankfurt - New York, his Hispanic roots and though this he rocks the dancefloor. Global, Funky, Twisted and Tribal-House all over the world: Oliver is surely one of the most busiest DJs in the German house scene. His homebase is Frankfurt Main starting point for many international DJ acts. There he plays in clubs such as: MONZA, KING KAMEHAMEHA, U60311 & 190 EAST from time to time. He also plays in the so called Envy Del Mar, the summer club of Frankfurt which became legendary meanwhile. As one of the residents there Oliver rocks the Sunday nights of the Rhein-Main metropolis. Beside that its difficult to pen point Oliver. You can listen to fresh electronic-house-tunes mixed Garcia styled once in a month at the CRÈME 21 in Heilbronn and also once in a month at the SAFAHI LOUNGE in Mainz. GERMAN CLUB/Dresden, ELEPHANT CLUB/Bielefeld, EL DIVINO/Cologne, GLEIS1/Kassel, DOCKLAND/Münster, Tiefenrausch/Bonn, PACHA/Hamburg, EXHIBITION/Bochum, PRINZIP CLUB/Munich, ROOM106/Darmstadt, JOUEJOUE/Erfurt, PARKCAFE/Wiesbaden, CLIMAX/Stuttgart, NACHTCAFE/Leipzig a long list of references which is ever growing in number even though the country is overswimming with house DJs and the clubs became more choosy with there selection of DJ acts. Most of the clubs dont simply look for famous names but look for quality in first line. Quality that you hear in the sets that Oliver plays . In the meanwhile he plays around the globe, in cities like New York, Paris, Zürich or Salzburg .. Recently Oliver Garcia played in Germany's famous and most well-known Radio- and TV DJ-show "YOU-FM Clubnight" at you fm radio, which is the most popular in Europe. Best known in all clubs of his hometown Frankfurt is the radiostation Planet Radio. Here Oliver is one of the different DJs in the weekly House Club Hottest. Together with guests like Chus & Ceballos, Mousse T, Bob Sinclair, Roger Sanchez. Despite of his busy schedule Oliver built up his own studio and he releases his self-produced tracks like "Sax On The Drums", "Just a Felling" and his brand new release "One" on Brickhouse Records. Also his CD mix compilations "Safahi Lounge Vol. 1." or "Voodoo - the Complete First Season", on brickhouse records, were extremely popular. In the pipeline there are a couple of more mix compilations, as well as another self produced track and a constantly growing dj schedule. Wherever Oliver Garcia is playing radio, club or open air festival, there surely should be enough room to dance. His pushing & global sound is driving the crowd to the dancefloor directly in to the heaven of electronic house music.

I hate to rain on your parade but,new york sux cunt right now,besides as you can see from the other posts,there are alot of absent-minded ignorant new yorkers who are self-absorbed fiends.If you really
wanna go somewhere mixed,try another city,maybe out west.Besides clubs are getting raided left and right for stupid things such as the cabaret law,which is so "1920s" and drugs which will pretty much happen anywhere at anytime,The security cameras and ID scanners,its like these mother fuckers gotta have a label on everybody.Lets not forget the stereotyping of certain groups of people who go to the ''Big room" clubs like myself,when I went to big places like that for the House music and dancing,not for drugs.All the nice big clubs have left town,everything is getting small and cheezy,not enuff room to really shake lose.Of course a majority of the people that go to those small bottle service,V.I.P. must be on certain guestlist to get in type clubs,are the people who could careless for the scene,they just want to BE seen,so they can feel,like a Gotti boy or Paris Hilton.New York nightlife is under a police state right now thanks to our arrogant city officials,and the ignorant self-centered jackasses out at these clubs and on clubplanet arent helping the situation either.I wouldnt recommend New York to any visitor until this city gets its shit together.Most people from out of the area arent aware of whats happening,if you intend on coming to NYC you will see for yourself what shit has been literally shooting nightlife str8 to hell

Ive been the resident in the basement for the last 5 or more weeks. Timmy keeps it ture to style upstairs and myself and guests play a vast range of House, Tech, progressive, funky, bumpy stuff downstairs. I have had a great feeling from the regulars there about the music and i love the true spirit of ppl there. Kinda real...no egoz.

If you make it till 1 or 2pm you might get to hear some Bob Marley, U2, Rolling Stones, Beasty Boys, Etc...The original Shelter party has been going for 15years now! If it sucked, dont think it would still be around. Good on them

The party is new and we are happy to say its been a great start. We have our events 2wice a month and have been a packed house 70% of the time. Last night was a bit slow due to the long weekend but we kept the vibe all night. Thanks to James and Gaby for playing w/ me and we will have them back again.
