An inspiring DJ, he says the following in his own words on how he got started in the music scene. I was introduced to Paul Oakenfold's, Tranceport by some friends in San Francisco. Before that I had no interest in Electronic music. Two years later after becoming submersed in trance and progressive house music I picked up turntables. His early influences include such artist as Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Sandra Collins, Sasha & Digweed, Dave Seaman and Jon Pak. These influences along with some great natural ability and fantastic energy are what make listening to KT so great! He has struggled in his home are of Detroit, trying to break through the heavy influences of the Detroit techno scene. As he says, traditionally this town has not embraced progressive styles of electronic music and has ever so graciously adopted the saying Trance Sucks as its motto as the anti-progressive capital of the world. This is a very techno oriented city that doesn't tend to validate any other form of electronic music. But with the help of my friends, fans, and other DJs we'll work to broaden the horizons of this city or at least reach as many new people as possible. Photo taken by Laura Murphy(NZ) CALIBRE Dominic Martin - Dublin, Ireland Signature / Soul:R June 2003 saw the launch of Signature Records, the new home exclusively for the work of Dominic Martin a.k.a. Calibre. Since his early work for Dublin label Qaudrophonic in 1998 Calibre has always delivered a sound that delves below the all too often unsatisfying D&B surface. His ability to bring a warm, natural feel to the digital landscape of drum n' bass raised interest from Creative Source and Radio 1's Fabio, leading to a critically acclaimed double album in 2001, entitled 'Musique Concrete'. This opened the door to a new breed of dance floor capable, musically orientated D&B, as confident in its longevity as in its originality. Less was certainly more. Since then Calibre has released for labels such as MIST's Soul:R label including collaboration work under the Mist:I:Cal moniker with the Manchester duo. Other label contributions have included Revolv:R, CIA, 31, Defunked, Innerground, Bassbin and Liquid V. Remixes have also been a heavy outlet for Calibre's take on 21st century blues and soul, with commissions coming in from the likes of High Contrast, Badmarsh & Shri and US R&B up and comer Jaheim. Fast forward to 2003 and Calibre's own vision, Signature records has come to light. This imprint is the home for his own prolific studio output, offering an unprecedented freedom to experiment and release music on his own terms. Signature promises regular Drum and Bass singles as well as an artist album in 2004 (Second Sun LP out Oct 10th!), a limited edition 10" Dub influenced series, remixes of his own work from fellow boundary pushers such as Omni Trio and Klute as well as further collaborations, including MIST's ST Files. Signature will also showcase Calibre's House and down tempo work, which has already seen the light of day thanks to John Tejada's US house imprint, Palette. Signature certainly looks like another reason to be positive about Drum and Bass and its assured longevity. Whatever the doubters may say, Drum and Bass isn't going anywhere; and neither is Calibre.
