  1. yes? no? is drum n bass dead? what are your favorite underground electronica styles to see live these days? just curious... i'm thinking about starting up a Live P.A. electronica group here soon, and am curious as to what everyone is really into here in NYC these days. thanks for the input...
  2. yo. i'm a drummer/percussionist who's looking to get into the electronica scene here after relocating to NYC a while back. was wondering if you know of a good DJ who'd be interested in collaborating w/a live drummer? a good "live P.A." band who needs one? here's a link to my work: www.myspace.com/brianhickman1 peace, brian
  3. what i've found, after using msg boards more lately to do some moving research (haven't used them much in the past), is that there are 2 basic types of posters: 1. the "informer," who tries to answer questions, give info, and be useful 2. the "commentator," who replies to what the "informer" has posted and gives him/her shit, and who usually has like 20,000+ posts and sits at his/her (usually his) computer in his briefs all day and never leaves the house to me, the "informer's" posts are a LOT more helpful. but then again, the "commentator's" replies crack me up (or piss me off)....... lol
  4. thanks for the info poppanils... much more useful than sheendawg's reply
  5. seeing as how someone posted on a previous thread that they had a 2 BR apartment in greenpoint for $750/mo, you obviously can...
  6. i'm hoping to find a really cheap place in the $750 to $1000 range-- probably just a 1 BR apt for my gfriend and i. a second bedroom would be nice to be used for an office/studio, but this type of price range i'm thinking is in the 1 BR range... or am i wrong? BTW, can you even find an apt in NYC cheaper than $750? i haven't checked out actual rent costs online yet in NYC, although i have done so for san francisco a while back, which has a pretty comparable cost of living, from what i hear.
  7. "financial district"? what is that.... the area where the stock exchange, etc, is?
  8. thanks for the info guys. i'll check out craigslist to get an idea of some rental prices. from what i've heard from a few people so far, brooklyn seems to be a good bet for where i might move. i'll check into the southern part of the lower east side, though, as well.
  9. i'm a musician interested in doing a live/electronic music blend, and thinking about moving to NYC. are there any neighborhoods in the NYC area that come to your minds where the housing costs are more moderate, and that would be a good spot for a musician to live? i'm not really talking "ghetto cheap".... just a spot where i could move w/my girlfriend, make a living playing music, and still be able to afford rent...
  10. I'm leaving out NYC b/c I want to see how you all think these 3 other cities compare... Are there any pros/cons about each city's scene that immediately come to your mind? In addition to the club scene in each city, any pros/cons about their live music scenes as well?

    miami scene?

yeah, from what i've seen, NYC seems to be the mecca in the states for EDM played by both DJ's and live bands. the only thing is that my girlfriend has some pretty major inhibitions about moving to NYC at this time (maybe in the future, though). additionally, up to this point, i have more experience w/funk & groove types of live band gigs (b/c there's no EDM scene around here), and it might be better for me to move somewhere else besides the "mecca of EDM in the states" first to get my chops in and knowledge of the genre more up to par. maybe once this is done it would be time for NYC, but i'm thinking moving somewhere else right now would be the smarter decision...

    miami scene?

does your "optimism" extend out towards the live music scene as well? or do you not check out the live bands in the area and stick mainly to DJ-oriented clubs? sorry about your internet/food/money situation

    miami scene?

ideally, i'd visit every place that i'm considering as a possible destination. but... like i said in the post, i'm a MUSICIAN, and therefore not the richest guy in the world w/the funds to make all these trips when i'm having to save $ for the move, etc as well. basically, i'm just currently in a place (fayetteville, AR) that used to be all right w/the music scene, for a small city, but that has gone way downhill the past few years, and i definitely need a change of scenery so that making a living as a musician/EDM artist is a viable option (so i can have $ for trips, etc.... . so, w/this in mind, i'm having to do a lot of research on the net to try to make the right move. i went to chicago before xmas to check the scene, but it didn't feel right for my girlfriend and i. we'll probably take another trip to one of my top three choices--miami, san fran, or LA (already ruled out NYC and chicago for various reasons)--but i haven't yet been to these three places, and can't afford to visit all three beforehand. plus, time is of the essence.... i'm anxious to be in a more real scene than what i have around me...

    miami scene?

i'm a musician/EDM programmer thinking about moving to miami, but never been there... what electronic genres are biggest in the big rooms? in the underground rooms? concerning live music: i know there's a big latin & latin hybrid thing going on down there. what other live genres are really blowin up there? (i'm most into groove-based bands, BTW)
  18. p.s.--i'm also wondering what the price range of the cheapest 1 or 2 bedroom house, and also 1 or 2 bedroom apt, would be in san fran, and if these are two expensive, what surrounding cities are lower cost but still close to the city. BTW, would the cheapest place in san fran be in a rough neighborhood? are there even rough neighborhoods in san fran?
  19. i'm a musician in the midwest, and am choosing a big city to move to w/my girlfriend, and maybe my brother as well. i'm a drummer/percussionist/sequence programmer that has been heavily involved w/groove-based music (i.e. funk, fusion, some hip-hop, etc.), and am really wanting to get together my ideal project, which is live electronica for the most part w/live looping, etc., w/some other grooves thrown in as well. so.... i'm wondering which electronica genres/sub genres are the strongest in san fran. i checked out chicago, and it's definitely house city there, w/some DnB going on as well. is san fran well known for a particular dance scene? i'm also wondering which live music genres are the strongest as well. i know NYC is the hot spot for the jazz cats, LA for the rockers (of course both spots have just about anything). is there a direction the san fran live scene really pushes? i checked out this thread: http://bbs.clubplanet.com/showthread.php?t=279574, and it was pretty informative about the san fran scene.... just trying to get some more info here....
