  5. David Hollands in Russia www.minimalwage.com summed it up best: “…from tropical beaches to cavernous, pulsating Gotham nightclubs to intimate lounges and frolicking pleasure boats, Hollands does what he does best: move bodies and stimulate minds with eclectic, intuitive sets of potent, cutting-edge dance music…†Son of a bitch… the guy is always on the move and hard to get a word from. Ironically, as we considered having him play Miami he popped up in South Beach -- along side Nigel Richards -- the day Shiva played. She knew them and invited them out to hear her and THAT was how we got in touch with him and asked him to fit us into his busy rotation. Residing in NY but seeming to never actually stay put, David’s hard and continuous work in the scene continues to take him around the world. A true pioneer of the scene, our interview with Locutus even had references to Mr. Hollands as an electronic music founder. So, I could go into the details of his lengthy career, or get to the interview and encourage you to check out his site: www.minimalwage.com for more info. But, above all else, come see the man behind all this well deserved hype and see why his name continues to be affiliated with techno and the ongoing struggle to breath new life into the electronic music scene. I start with the usual, “How did you get started?†David Hollands: “Played in a band in high school, we broke up so decided to use the equipment to DJ on.†Of course, I wanted to know, WHY TECHNO? His response: “Techno is only part of the picture... I started with R&B, hip-hop and other dance styles moved through house, acid house the whole thing.†bari.ann: “Where do you see yourself in 5 years? David: “Still doing what I love.†The question that always gets a wide variety of answers, again brought a surprise this time… “Influences?†Mr. Hollands’ intriguing answer: “Anybody who's been at the top of their game has been an influence - even if I disagree with their style altogether†His reply to the random question of -- “If you were a refreshing beverage, what would your main ingredients be?†“Ice (it must be cold), muddled fruit (so it seems healthy), bubbles (that make you laugh), and probably vodka (leaving you with a heady buzz).†In closing, I asked David what his proudest contribution to the scene was -- thus far… “ I really enjoyed the 4 years I was at Cafe Novecento, very memorable.†Bari.ann: “Anything you’d like to add…†David’s reply, “Just loving Miami…†We agree!!!

  14. A glimpse into the mind of Locutus: ----------------------------------------------------------- So the sunshine state is fortunate enough to have yet another recent techno transplant -- DJ Locutus. And, in case you hadn’t already heard -- Locutus <(along with T.Linder, Chris Calix & Anatoli Russki )> will be in one of Sobe’s favorite haunts, Laundry Bar on April 7. So, consider this interview a meet & greet. Not only a glimpse inside the mind of a DJ coming to our town, but a semi-local techno talent now claiming FL as his home. And Wes, AKA Locutus, had a lot to say. But the way he tells it reads like a well written story in some parts, reminding me truth can be more interesting than fiction. Starting with the same routine, I asked Wes how and why he got started. Locutus explained that he, along with Dave Wulle & Andy Garcia (owners of Docile Records Detroit/Las Vegas) went to school and parties together, and then began collecting vinyl back in the early days. “We came from a small town in Indiana. Back in 1994 there was a guy who did one-off punk rock shows in our town, and he knew that we were ‘into that new techno-rave thing‘. He asked us if we wanted to play at one of his shows after the bands finished. We barely had enough records (between all of us) to make a set, but being young and ambitious we gleefully agreed. “It was after we were setting up Andy’s decks in the back while the last band was playing that our excitement turned into morbid fear. We suddenly realized “oh shit, we’re about to play ‘dance music’ for an angry mob of slam dancing punk rock kids,†as if somehow that simple fact wasn’t blatantly obvious to us before. Dave and Andy suddenly decided I was going to be first… it was kind of like one of those “will a volunteer please step forwardâ€â€¦ everyone else takes one step back, and I’m the sap who just ‘volunteered’. *** (maybe it’s just me, but sounds more like ‘made the sacrificial lamb’ would be more accurate than volunteered) *** Wes continues…“The room was a gelatinous mix of disorder, darkness, and youth. My shaky hand managed to get the needle on the Superman (symphony) theme song from the movie sound track. Now the entirety of the sweaty, mottled, leather-clad mob was bearing down on me with their eyes. “I wondered if this would be the first, last, and only time I would step behind the decks in front of a crowd. Then with the sudden jolt of the fader in the hands of a novice I slammed into the first techno record. to read the full story, go to www.myspace.com/dirtygruv interview by Bari-Ann @ www.myspace.com/bari_ann

  19. T. LINDER is one of the Detroit Underground's best kept secrets. Extremely conscious of the historic significance of Techno in his hometown, T.Linder has done his homework and paid his dues. His street-honed DJ skills and dedication to Detroit's electronic music tradition have earned him recognition and respect from many of his mentors. He's rocked hundreds of events in Detroit and throughout North America; Including such high-profile gigs as the World Electronic Music Festival in Ontario, Canada (2000) and the Underground Stage at the 2002 Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Never one to follow fads, fashion or format, T.Linder's track selection can cover a wide range of genres and eras in any given set. Audiences can expect him to drop anything from the Electro-funk of the early '80s to white labels of brand new Techno tracks. Anything pressed to vinyl is potential ammunition for his arsenal. When T.Linder was asked to define his particular style. Paraphrasing Derrick May, he answered, "It's like Nitzer Ebb and Rakim stuck in a studio with only my records to keep them company." www.myspace.com/tlinderdetroit www.myspace.com/detroittechnomilitia
  20. LOCUTUS has been championing the sounds of American techno both in the reemerging American dance scene and while performing extensively in Asia and Europe. His renowned DJ skills have been witnessed at the finest clubs, festival, and events around the world. Rather than pigeonholing himself like many DJs today, his sets blend a range of funky styles form house, techouse, electro, minimal, and of course techno. He brings back meaning to the word “mixâ€. 2005-06 has proven to be major years for Locutus, both in DJing and production, with successful EPs for Marco Bailey’s MB Selektions, and Mark Broom’s King of the Snakes, and 2007 is already looking to top that. In addition he has highly acclaimed and charted releases on his own labels Bipolar and Polarized, and other international labels such as Konsequent, Surface, Gotham Grooves, Zuvuya, Serie, Flux, Remains, Dark Print, Anode, Elypsia, and Azure. Not only has Locutus been able to share the decks and studio with some of the giants of techno, but it is commonplace to his vinyl releases in the boxes of top jocks like: Ben Sims, Adam Beyer, Henry Chow, Chris Finke, Adam Jay, Dave Clarke, Suburban Knight, Sven Vath, Marco Bailey, Angel Molina, Frankie Bones, DJ Surgeon and many others.
