  7. 365MAG Interview: Michael Brand (CEO of Massive Event) View the original article here 5/14/09 So many debuts so little time. The summer schedule for Massive Event's is literally going to be Massive, and jam-packed with Top 100 Trance DJ's. Club Love has been tranced out like never before due to the extreme efforts of Massive NYC. Never before have there been so many world famous artists, and additionally artists that have never played for the New York crowd made it here to be in our presence and Massive Event are the ones making this possible. Since the beginning of this year they have already brought artists such as Randy Boyer, Breakfast, John O'Callaghan, Ronski Speed, Kyau & Albert, Tom Colontonio, and Giuseppe Ottaviani. In addition they have ventured into house and techno markets bringing in talent like Chloe Harris, Hybrid, Shlomi Aber, and Marcus Schossow. Check out their upcoming schedule, it includes talent such as Simon Patterson, Marcel Woods, Sean Tyas, Cosmic Gate, Richard Durand, and there are plenty more special surprises on the way. We got together with Michael Brand owner of Massive Event for a little Q & A on what we can expect from them in the future. Continue reading to find out more details… First and foremost would you like to tell us more about Massive Event? Well, if you have been to one of our events, you know Massive is about the party, the right DJ, the right crowd, and the right atmosphere. The events are fan driven; they are equally for the dance music enthusiasts and the average clubber. Never pretentious, all we care about is that anyone and everyone have a great time. How do you handle the day-to-day responsibilities of running Massive Event? Well, I have to say, I couldn't do anything without Matty (Felner), and he is my right hand man. He is an absolute marketing and PR wizard. I'm only good at taking care of vodka. How did each of your histories lead you to where you are now? For starters I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Dr. Frank Nasso, he is my inspiration and reason d'être. I was a “professional†clubber who should have been charged rent for the amount of time I spent at Twilo. When I felt that not enough of the EDM talent was being brought to NYC I decided to do something about and here we are today. Matty came up working at Crobar, that really gave him exposure to inner workings of clubland in New York. What are some of your business goals for the remainder of this year? Massive has always been about simplicity, so our goal is just to keep the brand going and continue bringing in talent that will tear this city a new one. We will continue to focus on bringing up a new generation of dance music enthusiasts and that why you do see us working hard to cater to a younger crowd as well since many of the clubbers of my generation are nearing retirement from the scene. We do, however, intend to throw some bigger events with talent-laden line-ups so be on the lookout. Any plans on going countrywide one day, or are you content with the local scene? We are from New York and what we do is FOR New York, so we will stay local for now. I would never close the door on an opportunity for growth though so when the time is right you will see global expansion. Do you find it difficult competing with other New York promoters? It would seem that NYC is quite competitive, but actually the truth is each and every promoter in the city has his or her own niche. We carved one that did not mirror or compete with any other promotion company. It's helped us stand out without taking anything away anything from any other promoter. As a whole we feel that is very good for the scene. How does Massive Event go about standing out from the rest? Our focus has always been about the music. By being about the music and acting more as fans than business people we are able to bring in the talent not everyone is willing to take a chance on. One of the things we wanted to accomplish is to educate people that it's not always about the brand name DJ, it's about the talent. What are some of the things you feel the typical New York City clubber wants? I'm not sure what a “typical†NYC clubber is to be honest. There is nothing typical about the people in this city. I will say though that New York EDM fans are extremely knowledgeable and thus critical as well, so it's always a challenge to produce good events for them, which is great in our opinion, it pushes us to work harder. I'd say though most people want a stress free clubbing environment, no hassle on lines, nothing pretentious or exclusive. Just a place you can go nuts and leave it all on the floor. Most importantly it should be affordable and we really try to make it just that despite the costs to put such a night together. What aspects of this business motivate you to keep improving? Without a doubt I'd say it's the feedback from the people attending the parties. I have had seasoned veterans of the clubbing scene tell me they have had more fun at one of the Massive events than at Trance Energy. That just makes us work harder to deliver that kind of satisfaction. Like we said before, the NYC EDM fan is really knowledgeable, so they set the bar really high and we welcome the challenge to meet those standards. Most of the general population is unaware as to how much work goes into putting on an event, would you like to provide some insight on that? Oh man, yeah, I can't even begin to tell you how difficult it is and how stressful it is. Everyone always sees an end product culminating from months of work. It isn't easy at all. How do you go about selecting which lesser-known artists you are willing to take a risk on? That is a very tough question. We always look at the artist as a whole, their productions, stage presence, marketability, and charisma. We want someone who will interact with the crowd, not just on stage, but the kind of DJs that will hang out for a bit and talk to people. How are you able to make your events so affordable in comparison to the promoters who charge an arm and a leg? The answer to that is simple, it's not about the money for Massive. We just want to give clubbers and DJs an opportunity to enjoy one another. That means operating at a low margin of profit since the costs associated with bringing a DJ from overseas is considerable. At the moment is seems Massive is focused on the trance genre, do you have any plans of expanding to say… house or techno? Absolutely! We will be making occasional forays into those markets to broaden our market a bit. We don't want be pigeon holed in any way. Our events we did in those genres did very well so we are encouraged to try them again. How do you feel about club Love in comparison to other clubs in New York? We really, well for lack of a better term, Love it! The sound is amazing and the vibe there is really cool. It's reminiscent of Arc and Twilo in that dark vibe it has. It reminds me a lot of Turnmills in London when it was around. The DJs that have come through have told me they really enjoyed the intimate vibe and being that close to the crowd, many of them preferred that to playing bigger venues. Are there any particular artists that you have your eye on at the moment? Of course! But we will keep their names close to the vest for now How would you handle a situation where the turn out for an event wasn't quite what you expected? It's happened before and I'm sure it will happen again, there are always circumstances that cause it. If they are circumstances within our control we learn from the experience and correct it so it doesn't happen again. If it's out of our control, well, there is nothing that can be done so why stress? What are the factors that you believe contribute to your success? I think the secret to our success is our accessibility. We don't hide in back rooms you know you can find us in the middle of the dance floor. I'm easy to spot; I'm the blithering idiot speaking Klingon. We are just like everyone else, we love the music and love a good party and enjoy the company of the people there. I think people respect that. Would you like to share anything else with us that we haven't covered? We would really like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported our efforts. We wouldn't be anywhere today if it weren't for the people who come out and support our parties and for that we are truly grateful. We hope to see everyone at some point at one or all of our events and get your friends into it! 365Mag would like to thank Massive NYC for their time and answers! MassiveEvent.com 365mag.com
