Mark Farina Returns to Milwaukee for Mushroom Jazz 6 Tour

Original Chicago downtempo legend G-Most lends support

MILWAUKEE—It’s been nearly three years since producer/DJ Mark Farina has taken Milwaukee audiences on a ride of trippy, downtempo grooves and funky house beats. Now, for the first time since May 2006, one of underground house music’s original innovators returns for a three-hour set in support of his latest series compilation, Mushroom Jazz 6. Co-sponsored by SmartBar Chicago and AmatoInside promotions, Farina takes the decks for a special, one-off event on Friday, April 18 at Moct (240 E. Pittsburgh). Original Chicago downtempo legend G-Most (New York) opens the show.

In releasing the sixth installment of his acclaimed Mushroom Jazz series, Farina melds his signature blend of funky, instrumental hip hop, downtempo, soul and blunted beats to create a fluid mix of grooves and drop-outs. For his upcoming Milwaukee performance, the producer/DJ throws down a three-hour set that slinks through the easy, organic vibes of his Mushroom Jazz repertoire before turning on the chuggy, dance floor groove that has come to define his style. From fade-out vocals to big, funky bass lines, Farina’s sets have become one of the most recognizable sounds in underground house.

Joining Farina for an opening performance is Chicago downtempo original, G-Most. A former cohort of Chicago’s legendary Red Nail Crew, G-Most spun his way up from the local roller rinks and record shops to produce several tracks with San Francisco-based Josh Michaels (aka DJ Iz). Before moving to New York in 2000, G-Most’s appeared on Farina’s inaugural Mushroom Jazz 1 compilation, crafting dub-inspired, downtempo beats that bump with breezy, melodic groove.

Milwaukee welcomes the return of Farina on Friday, April 18, with event host James Amato (SmartBar Chicago, Potty Mouth Music, AmatoInside) providing sound by Subversion and visuals VJ Brye. The event takes place at one of the Historic Third Ward’s most spacious party venues.

Advance tickets are currently available through HYPERLINK "http://www.smartbarchicago.com" www.smartbarchicago.com for $10, which ensures guaranteed and no-wait entry the night of the show. Advance ticket prices are available until April 17 at 10 p.m.; tickets are $15 day of the show. Must be 21 and older for entry. Tickets do not include “In and Out†privileges. No Dress Code.

  6. Potty Mouth Music, Smart Bar Chicago to Host WMC 2009 Closing Party

PMM artists HiJack and Andy George to make US debut at downtown Miami venue

CHICAGO—The temperatures and talent are heating up downtown Miami at this year’s Winter Music Conference, as Potty Mouth Music and Smart Bar Chicago partner to host the 2009 closing party on Sunday, March 29. Featuring a line-up that includes 14 house, electro and techno-influenced DJs from around the globe, this year’s closing party will be hosted at Electric Pickle (formerly Circa 28, 2826 N. Miami Ave.) and include two levels of sound for the amazing low advanced ticket price of $8.

In addition to showcasing the annual, Smart Bar’s acclaimed resident talent of Colette, Justin Long[b/] and Miles Maeda, this year’s party also welcomes several music debuts, including first-time, US performances by Potty Mouth Music artists HiJack and Andy George (UK). Under the moniker HiJack, Jon Chant is known for creating and playing bouncy, funk-fueled grooves with chunky beats and hooks that walk a thin between house and techno. George, a PMM newcomer in 2008, made a fast statement across the world not only with his filthy, big room “bangers†but also with the launch of his monthly, BBC Radio1 show he co-hosts with Jaymo.

Also making his Smart Bar resident debut at WMC is Santiago, along side production partner Bushido. As one of the first signings to the PMM roster, Santiago & Bushido’s brand of forward thinking, tech house beats elevated his career to new heights in 2008, including a No. 1 seller on Beatport.

Joining in the WMC closing antics are fellow PMM artists Scott Cooper (UK) and TJR (NYC). England’s Will Bailey—one half of Bass Weazel, formerly one half of Twocker—also touches down for a electro-house inspired set, while Smart Bar mainstays Frankie Vega and Ori Kawa (Chicago) bring their hometown flavor to the bill. Chicago’s own Alex Peace & Mixin Marc of Movement Music / B96 along with Dino G of SpyBar round out one of WMC’s dirtiest dance line-ups. Host Whisky Pete (LA) MC’s the event.

This year’s Potty Mouth Music, Smart Bar closing party is hosted at downtown Miami’s Electric Pickle (formerly Circa 28), and features two rooms of sound powered by a Cobra Dynachord Sound System. The newly remodeled venue includes two levels that can accommodate up to 300 guests, along with an outside area open to another 130 partygoers. Guests are encouraged to arrive—and purchase tickets—early for guaranteed entry. Advance tickets are available for $8 each by visiting www.smartbarchicago.com; tickets are also available for $12 the day of the show.

The Electric Pickle is located at 2826 N. Miami Ave. Music is from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. For more information visit www.pottymouthmusic.com or www.smartbarchicago.com

KYLE WATSON (South Africa) Potty Mouth Music

    http://www.myspace.com/headfiller

Funk, fidget and bounce find common ground on the production of palette of Kyle Watson, a South African producer who melds melodic beats with big bass. The result is malleable vibe that is organic enough to keep house heads on the floor and energetic enough to blow fidget fans off of it.

Watson first garnered a grassroots following of dance music fans in his native South Africa in 2006, when a small independent dance label uploaded several of his studio crafted tracks to favored response. By the following year, Elevate Music had taken notice and began releasing techy, start-up tracks including “Push It,†“Abstraction,†and “Something Dirty.†Pushed by his own burgeoning underground success, Watson soon migrated to remix work, putting his electro spin on Paul Bingham’s “Superstar.†The track would rise the ranks of both the Beaport and Juno minimal/tech and electro house charts. His remix of Terrance Dizko’s “Be Alright†on Lets Play House also earned nods from tech house fans with fellow South African producer Lady Lea, who named him one of the country’s top upcoming producers in 2007.

Watson’s success was fueled further with help from his rerub of the Kristy Hawkshaw’s classic track “It’s A Fine Day,†which flew to No. 1 on the DMC Buzz Chart within one week. His work led to recent remix projects for John Dahlback’s “More Than I Wanted†(Pickadoll) and Goldfish’s “Cruising Through†(Pacha Recordings). More recently, Watson has released a biting bootleg of Groove Armada’s “Superstyling†and teamed with fellow Potty Mouth Music artists Chris James and Lee Dearn on a remix project the duo’s new digital label, Dubnoir. The imprint debuted in early 2009.

When Watson is not playing for audiences in South Africa, he travels to Fulham, London, where audiences at Zulu’s Bar dig deep into his sound. Regular gigs at the likes of Electric Circus and KISS prove that 20-year-old Watson is on the long-term radar for fidget audiences in all corners of the scene.

Fresh and Bouncy EP is Kyle Watson’s first release on Potty Mouth Music.

    POTTY MOUTH MUSIC (Chicago): www.pottymouthmusic.com

Screw soap the mouth; the brand of jack that defines Chicago's new-school house sound gets a tech-heavy makeover from the talent roster of Potty Mouth Music. Inspired by the dirty glitch twists of fidget house producers such as Switch, Trevor Loveys and Jesse Rose, Potty Mouth ditches conventional house boundaries, imploring turntable trickery, unconventional loops and straight up techno into its catalogue of tracks. Chicago-based label head James Amato keeps house-heavy influences in place and lacing them with the kind of dirty glitch that makes it feel so good to be so bad. Potty Mouth's artists include Crookers (Italy), Santiago & Bushido (Chicago), HiJack (UK), Dj Fame (New York), The Bulgarian (UK), Heavyfeet (UK), Cops & Robbers (Chicago), Electric Soulside (Belgium), Andy George (UK), Scott Cooper (UK), Klaus Hill (Australia), Mightyfools (Netherlands), Adam Bozzetto (Australia), TJR (New York), Chris James & Lee Dearn (UK), Urchins (UK), Pette Vaydex (Slovenia), Rockwell D (UK) and Kyle Watson (South Africa).

SCOTT COOPER (England) Potty Mouth Music

    http://www.myspace.com/djscottcooper

Scott Cooper blends jackin electronic house with eclectic influences of hip-house, ragga and dancehall. His diverse spin on the underground sound has made him a less predictable—but always rowdy—addition to the Potty Mouth Music roster.

Cooper channeled his classically trained guitar skills into electronic music, taking early influence from Sasha, Lee Burridge, Craig Richards and the breaks of DJ Hyper. London-based DJ Jon Carter further influenced his production with a fusion of ragga vocals and old-school samples with house music and broken beats. His diversity would become the cannon for a sound he would develop at Nottingham’s prestigious Confetti Studios.

In the past 10 years, Cooper has honed his skills on the decks and in the studio, collaborating with artists such as Jak Z, and Balie funk MC Edu-K. Cooper’s breakthrough “Hanging with Mr. Cooper EP†released in early 2008 on Lee Mortimer’s Wearhouse Music showcased his signature mix of electro, dancehall and breaks. The artist takes these influences even further with his forthcoming “Natty Jack EP,†on Wearhouse, which includes remixes by Potty Mouth Music artists HiJack and Heavy Feet.

“I’d describe my style as all-embracing in the way that I like to get a lot of different sounds and make sense of them in both my productions and my DJ sets,†Cooper says. The self-proclaimed serial collaborator of late still finds time to work with other artists while also making time to tweak his own twisted sound.

On the DJing front, forthcoming gigs see Cooper, 27, touring Canada, Europe and The States, along with an annual outing to Ibiza. He has held a previous residency at Digital in Lincoln and is a current resident of the monthly Moda event which Potty mouth's Andy George runs along with fellow Lincoln based DJs Jaymo and Ingo Staar.

Cooper has collaborated with George for their latest EP, “The Cooper and George EP†due for release in July 2008.

Audio Soul Project - Room With No Windows (Revisited)

Nathan Drew Larsen - New Day In A New Home

    WHAT THEIR SAYING:

Stel (Dieb Audio) - Love the concept and love the tunes! Top top marks as usual. My fave's are "Deep Trip" and the Echo Mix of "Mirari".

Milton Jackson - Love the Wasted Chicago Youth remix, fantastic. Also Mirari is great, I love those synths. Thanks!

Nathan Coles (Wiggle) - I believe one of the words you chaps across the pond would use is...DOPE! Here's to many more Fresh Meat years!

Rob Mello - "Deep Trip" and "New Day In A New Home" do it proper for me.

Kenny Hawkes - Really a great package. I'm not sure which track I like best as they're all really good. I'm looking forward to playing "Deep Trip", Wasted Chicago Youth's "Gotahavejor Love" remix and "Room With No Windows". Thanks for sending this.

Pete Dafeet - Fresh Meat has fast become my favorite label. I want to make music like you guys, simple as that.

John Selway - Feeling the distinctive deep funk of "Mirari". The dark drive of "Room With No Windows" is quite good as well.

    THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

It was Roy Ayers who said, "Bad is about as good as it gets!" "When Bad People Cook Good Food" is the first collection to cover the three year history of Chicago's Fresh Meat Records – including tracks from many of the label's cast of bad characters. Key artists represented here include Audio Soul Project, Nathan Drew Larsen, Tuomas Salmela of Phonogenic, Phonique, King Roc, Will Saul & Tam Cooper, House of Black Dress, Worthy, Dan Berkson, Kyle Szmurlo, Wasted Chicago Youth, and Peace Division. "When Bad People Cook Good Food" is not a greatest hits; fans and new listeners alike will appreciate that eight of the songs on this release are exclusive, including unreleased tracks, fresh album only edits and a hot as hell new remix of the House of Black Dress classic "Gotahavejor Love" by Wasted Chicago Youth (Mazi & Justin Long). As a special bonus, this release comes alongside a sublime live DJ mix by Mazi under his Audio Soul Project guise featuring 13 of the songs in the collection. "Deep Trip" by Sandrino & Adryan, Fresh Meat’s newest signing, starts the mix and sets the stage for an album that elegantly blurs the boundaries between contemporary and classic house music. The compilation is teaming with vibrant remixes, the crown jewels being what are arguably the best reworks by German outfit Phonique and Chicago to London transplant Dan Berkson. Vocal tunes by Audio Soul Project, Badmouth, and Mazi & Duriez give this record what so many contemporary tech house collections are missing. There are also two revisited gems from the vault. Nathan Drew Larsen’s "Mirari" and Audio Soul Project's "Room With No Windows" both have been reinvented exclusively for this compilation. King Roc's pastoral deep house remix of "Touch Meâ€, a colorfully epic rendition of Nathan Drew Larsen's sexy original, ends the DJ mix version of this compilation. As promised some months ago, the unmixed version of this album contains the original version of Larsen's "New Day In A New Home" complete with it's glorious Prophet-8 infused intro - more honest electronic dance music from an artist with no boundaries.

Enjoy this Fresh Meat as delivered by some of the baddest characters around!

With their blend of big basslines and vocals, Santiago & Bushido are a filthy addition the Potty Mouth Music roster. Since teaming up as a production duo in 2001, Chris Santiago and Tim Bushido have elevated the art of electronic jack to encompass many influences, from the hard hitting to the deep and soulful.

At the core of Santiago & Bushido’s sound lays the forward thinking, funk-tech that has given them critical moxie in Chicago and beyond. As products of the mid ’90s rave scene, the DJ/producers grew up immersed in a community that they would soon become their professional careers. Bushido picked up djing at an early age and got deep into the art of production. Experimenting with hip hop at the start, he slowly ebbed into house production, thanks in part to his work at Chicago Recording Company. Sharing the same recording space with the likes of R.Kelly and Smashing Pumpkins, Bushido honed his engineering and production prowess until opportunity knocked.

While Bushido was mastering his craft, Santiago was working his way up the Chicago’s nightlife hierarchy. Within one year of playing live gigs, he secured a Friday night residency at Zentra Nightclub. The renowned “Jack Fridays†have continued to attract underground house crowds for more than six years, with crowds still going off weekly. Santiago’s presence in the Chicago house community reaches even further with his involvement in the House Arrest promotion group, which continues to host some of the scene’s most well attended parties.

As producers, Santiago & Bushido draw influences from their straight house background and apply harder and heavier elements to the sound. “We get really deep into the tracks we’re producing, flip them and cut them in so many different ways, all to get the heaviest groove possible,†Bushido says. Since collaborating, they have dropped numerous EP’s and remixes on some of House Music’s most well respected label including Robsoul, Control Recordings and Black Cherry, to name a few. The duo’s smash release “What Your Name?†on Robsoul continues to enjoy heavy rotation on the global house scene.

In addition to their Potty Mouth debut, the duo recently finished work on Colette’s new album “Pushâ€, slated for August release on OM Records. They wrote and produced the album’s second slotted single, “If,†which they also remixed for a separate release. Already generating a buzz in the house community, “If†also features its own music video which will align with the release.

Santiago & Bushido’s recent inclusion in the Potty Mouth family aligns with the duo’s production and performance philosophies. “One thing about us is we’re not afraid to do a deep track or a totally hardcore track…as long as it works on the dance floor and is pushing the sound forward, it works for us.†Given the tech-funk inflection of their forthcoming release, the nastier the duo delves, the better they beat.
