...i think you have to expand your porn library cuz there aint no standards in this industry...you got small, medium, large...just like the women...and there are certainly no standards on appearance either...sometimes it seems that they purposely pick people w/ pimples on their butts...:vomit2:

So you want to be a Porn Star?

Just about every guy has thought about becoming a Porn Star at one time or another & and the majority of girls have, too. For some it's a fleeting thought, for others it's a fantasy, and some just wonder if they'd be good enough. And then there are those who really want to get into Porn, but they don't have a clue about how to get into "Porn City".

If you're one of those who thinks you'd like to be a Porn Star, then you've come to the right place. Porn City News has collected all the info that you'll need, so you can make an informed decision about a career move into porn, along with details about the agents, video companies, photographers, magazines, internet companies, and contact information so you'll have a way to actually get here. Choosing to do so is totally up to you!

Porn Star Q&A:

1) What's it like to be a Porn Star?

Being a Porn Star offers notoriety, fun, money, rubbing elbows with celebs, freedom with your work schedule, travel, and exciting sexual experiences. But it's not for everyone. You're the only one who can decide if it's right for you or not. And that's one thing we're trying to help you do with this site.

2) What kind of resume, experience, or personal attributes do you need?

Girls can get into porn no matter what... almost. If an attractive girl with a nice body (say a 6 or higher on a 1-10 scale) comes to Los Angeles for a week, she can make 2 adult videos each day for the whole week if she wants to. Then she goes home and counts her money. She won't be rich, but it'll probably be more money than she could make in 6 months otherwise.

Guys, on the other hand, have to live in Los Angeles. If you don't already live in Porn City, then you need to move to Los Angeles. Beyond that, guys fall into two categories: Those who have a chance on their own, and those who don't. But remember, there are ALWAYS exceptions!

In order for a guy to have a chance on his own he'll usually be a very attractive guy, have a good attitude, a nice appearance, be fairly intelligent, and be able to impress a potential employer regardless of what job he was applying for.

If you don't think you have a chance on your own, then you need either:

1) a girl who gets into the biz, and brings you with her... she'll just say that she wants to work with you for the first few videos she's in, or 2) an uncle or somebody who you know in the business who gives you a chance, or 3) your own money so you can start your own company to make movies... with you as the male star!

3) What are the risks?

HIV is the most feared, but getting involved with the wrong people, being taken advantage of, having your family or friends disown you, having drugs or alcohol ruin your life, or having moral issues with what you're doing are the most frequently reported negative experiences.

4) How are Porn Stars treated by the companies they work for?

If you're good to them, they're usually good to you. If you have your shit together, do your job, and are generally pleasant at work, then you'll have a positive experience. If you bring your problems to a set, wear your emotions on your sleeve, and are a liability to the director instead of an asset, then you'll probably not be treated with respect.

There's a stereotype that most porn stars are irresponsible, out of control, living for the moment, and aloof. Though there are a lot of great people in porn, there's also a reason for the stereotype. Directors usually aren't surprised if an actress/actor doesn't show up for a scene, has been drinking or is on drugs, or if somebody has an emotional outburst that causes a disturbance. The reason they're not surprised?... NOT because everybody in porn is a loser, but because directors have just about seen it all.

5) Are there any guarantees?

These days there aren't guarantees with any job you have... so the answer is absolutely not!

6) How much money do Porn Stars make?

It depends. And there are exceptions, but generally girls make more than guys, and the range is wide. Girls make between 500 - 2000 per sex scene, with amounts depending on the who the girl is, and what the scene involves.

Guys, in general, make about half as much as girls, but their rate is usually the same regardless of what type of sex they're doing. Below is a little more detail.

Guys - The range for guys is from 0-$600 per scene. Usually a new guy starts with small companies and small projects making $200 to $250 per scene. If the companies and girls you work with like you and your performances, word will travel fast, and you'll be working for the larger companies, higher budget projects, and with veteran female performers before you know it. And as you climb porn's "professional ladder", your "per scene" rate will increase if you expect it to. But you may have to ask for it with some companies. It basically follows the law of supply and demand.

Guys usually get paid their per-scene rate for any scene that they do, and the same or slightly less for magazine shoots.

Girls - The range for girls is usually from a few hundred to $2000 per scene. A girl's starting point is determined by how marketable she is. She's what sells the product, so if she's a Playboy Playmate or Penthouse Pet, companies will pay a lot for her. Most girls start off making around $400-600 for a boy/girl scene, and after she starts showing up in some of the magazines, she can raise her rate and expect to get it. And the process continues from there.

Girls usually get paid around $500-$800 for a magazine shoot, with exceptions for the biggest stars.

7) What are the different ways that Porn Stars make money?

Performing hard core and/or simulated sex acts, and other nude modeling for videos, magazines, adult product catalogues, and the internet... and appearances, performances, or autograph signings at conventions, adult video and book stores, and feature dancing.

Guys do magazine shoots, as in "Boy/Girl" layouts, some of which are hard core and some simulated sex... a guy can do one of these photo shoots each week if he's a good performer. If it's simulated sex, and kept strictly professional, you'll end up stroking it yourself with little or no help from the girl during the shoot. That's when a guy decides whether he wants to be in mags or just stick with hard core video work.

Guys will sometimes be asked to do nude modeling for adult catalogue companies and sex toy catalogues, and then there's convention signings... but only the top guys end up being paid by companies to represent them at the conventions. Guys are starting to get work doing appearances at adult video/book stores. And the internet has provided a new "stage" on which to perform. Some companies hire guys and girls to perform together, and then there's the do-it-yourself websites, too!

8) How often do Porn Stars work?

Just about as often as they like. If you make it... that is, if you impress the right people at the beginning, then you'll get hired enough that you'll stay as busy as you like. If you want to put a number on it, the average performer will do between 2-6 projects each week, depending... while some choose more and some choose less.

9) How much control do Porn Stars have over the work they do or the projects they do?

Not a whole lot unless they produce the work themselves, meaning hiring a photographer or video crew, and do a shoot as their own project. The down side to working as a performer is that your image isn't your own, and the images can be sold from here to eternity, while you make the basic fee for "performing"... and that's it... usually.

10) What are the agents like?

There is only one agent of note in porn, while a couple others have been around for a while, and with others popping in and out of the picture occasionally. There's one agent who has represented the vast majority of new actresses and actors in porn over the last 25 years. Jim South is his name, and his agency is World Modeling.

The other agents worth mentioning are Reb Sawitz of Pretty Girl International, who's reportedly been a good agent for a relative handful of performers, and Regan Senter of Beautiful Models International, who has earned a very poor reputation.

11) What are the companies like? Who runs them?

Some are large and some are small, some are professional and some aren't. As a new performer, you'll find that some companies don't want to even talk to you. Others will tell you to call them after you've got some experience "under your belt". Your agent and other performers will fill you in on which companies are the most reputable, professional, etc... and which ones to avoid like the plague.

12) What are the people like?

You'll find plenty in porn that you like and dislike, including attitudes and egos. In general, when you first get into porn, there will be some who accept you immediately, and some who'll be standoff-ish... and some will be downright rude. But there's really a place for just about everybody in porn... and after people have heard about you through the Porn City "grapevine", others will start asking about you... they'll be curious about the new guy (or girl), and everything after that is pretty cordial.

13) What's it like being on a porn set & performing in a sex scene?

The director is the man... he sometimes has a producer who puts together a cast of guys and girls for the sex scenes, and any other non-sex roles that are called for... and sometimes he does it himself. The director also has a production assistant on the set on the day of the shoot who takes care of all the little stuff... like food and beverages, towels, lube, dealing with "talent" who are late or can't find the location, and collecting legal paperwork from the performers like model releases, HIV tests, and tax documents. And then there's the camera, sound, and lighting guys... the production crew.

Five or six sex scenes go into a porn video, with dialogue mixed in. The sex scenes are what sells, so that's the priority. A movie usually takes from one to three days to shoot. Usually when you show up to a set, you wait. That's because something or another always makes porn shoots go off schedule. So you learn to call a couple hours before your call-time to see how the day's going.

When you do your sex scene, you'll do the scene usually start to finish, with dialogue coming first to set up the sex. There's a lot of care taken to get lighting and sound just right at the beginning of the scene. And sometimes things need adjusting after dialogue and before the sex starts. But after the sex starts, there's usually not much interruption... not much, that is.

During the sex portion of the scene, still camera men will pop in and out and get still photos for box covers and other promo stuff. They coordinate with the video crew so it flows pretty smoothly. The video crew will get different angles, and different views for hard and soft core versions, and while they adjust for a minute, the still cameras get their shots. They snap off a few shots or so during each sexual position (usually 3 or 4 positions per scene) and get out of the way so the video crew can resume without delay.

Some of the positions are comfortable, and lots aren't, and your job as a guy is to keep wood, and make it look good no matter what. Sometimes a position just won't work, and then you adjust so it's good for you and the cameras. It's what's on video that counts, and if you're having too good of a time, it's usually not going to look right for the camera. So you enjoy performing, you enjoy the sex to some extent, but not fully... at least not the whole time during the scene.

Many performers joke that getting to fuck on a bed is a rarity, and such a nice change of pace! Usually it's on a kitchen counter, bathroom tile floor, or tub, Jacuzzi, pool, or outside on rocks, in a tree, on a motorcycle, on a horse, or something equally "erotic".

After you've done your "fake internal pop", or "FIP" (faking an orgasm while penetrating the woman) for the video's cable version, and then doing the real pop shot on her ass, tits, pussy, mouth, or whatever, you collect your things, take a shower, get paid, say "see you later" to all, and hit the road.

14) What is expected of a Porn Star?

For a girl... hot performances, and that's almost the extent of it. It's a bonus if they show up on time to a set, if they're pleasant to cast and crew, if they don't bring their personal problems with them to a set, if they're reasonable, and so on... that's what gives them a good reputation, and will pay off in the long run. If a girl doesn't give hot performances, demand will quickly fade.

For guys... you're expected to get wood and deliver a cum shot when and where it's needed, regardless of the chemistry that you and the girl have. Sometimes that means stroking it yourself during any camera switches, film reloads, etc. If she doesn't want to be fucking when the camera's not rolling or snapping shots, then you have to be "professional" enough to get the job done without bitching about it.

For the most part, the guy is there to supply a cock so that the girl can be filmed getting fucked, and looking hot while she's getting fucked. Anything else that may be pleasurable can be considered a bonus.

By the same token, if a guy wants to relax and stroke it himself during any time when the camera's not rolling, the girl has to understand... even if she's dying to keep getting fucked. In practice, that doesn't happen very often, but the equality does exist.

15) Is being a Porn Star like being a mainstream Hollywood actor?

NO! But that's not hard to figure out. There's more money and respect given to mainstream actors. Even a porn "superstar" remains largely unknown to the masses, but as a porn star you get recognized by people here and there who think what you do is really cool and want to meet you, or to ask you about porn, or how to become a porn actor/actress themselves.

And there are times when porn stars get special treatment because of who they are... especially the girls. And then there are the times when someone will approach you and ask, "Don't I know you from somewhere"? That one's always kind of funny. That's when you know there's a good chance that they do their grocery shopping at the same store as you, or they're a fan of porn... or maybe you just have a "familiar" face!

16) Does penis size matter?

As long as you've got enough to make it look good on camera... which is 5 or more inches, you'll be just fine. The camera has to be able to see penetration, and when you're talking stills, they've got to be able to see enough cock to see that it's hard, and they've got to see the penetration. Girls don't like getting rammed all day with a huge cock, so you can be too big in a practical sense. Optimum seems to be 7 to 9 inches... the directors get a little extra to work with as far as the camera goes, and the girls get all they want without worrying too much.
