LavenderMenace
HOMOPHOBIA SHOCKER AT RADIO 1 20/09/2002 16:04:52Gay rights group OutRage have attacked Radio 1 over Capleton's 'Burn Out Da Chi Chi'. The track was listed in the playlist of Radio 1 DJ Chris Goldfinger on his page on the Radio 1 website. A Radio 1 spokesman told The Guardian that the reference to the song on the website was a "mistake" and stressed the track had never been played on Radio 1 or 1Xtra. However, Elephant Man's 'Log On' _ which has also been criticised by groups for its homophobic content _ has been played by Radio 1 and 1Xtra. When the track was broadcast on 1Xtra the offensive lyrics were edited out. OutRage said: "We are appalled that the BBC, a public funded broadcaster, could be distributing music with this content." BBC2's recent program The History of Reggae also slipped up by following a piece about how Shabba Ranks and Buju Banton's careers had been affected by their perceived homophobia with footage of Elephant Man (pictured) performing 'Log On'. The track was also included on a BBC web-page. The 'Log On' lyrics appear to condone the beating up and torching of a gay man: "Log on and step 'pon chi chi man. Dance wi a dance and a bun out a freaky man ... Step pon him like a old cloth. A dance wi a dance and a crush out dem ... Do di walk mi see the light and di torch dem fass." A spokesman for the Jamaican gay rights campaigners J-Flag told The Guardian that homophobic dancehall songs were guilty of inciting a gay hate culture in Jamaica that had recently led to several crimes including murder. http://www.seven-mag.com/news_detail.asp?id=
