mugwump
I love my new job. I'm learning allotabout how a real movie studio works and I'mmeeting tons of interesting characters.(Not to mention making a shit load of connections)However...the other day I was sitting in an editingroom watching a music video being edited andin walks the director. I swear to fucking godthis kid must have been no older than 23 (TOPS)He runs his own business and makes videos.I was shocked. In NY you have to worklike a dog under several companies andmany years before youare able to call your own shots like that (Unless you happen to get extremely lucky)So I left the studio and on my way homeIt hit me: FUCK THIS STRUGGLING ARTISTSHIT! I'M GOING INTO BUSINESS!!I don't want to work under anybody forthe rest of my life.I want to make MY OWN FILMS. and bring in my own projects.I need some training and business smarts.I need to go back to school. So I did some research and decidedon THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY oF Rome.two year business management courseswith a MASTERS diploma. (This way I balanceart and money)WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?IS THIS A GOOD IDEA?HAVE ANY OF YOU THAT HAVE GOTTENA MASTERS ACTUALLY BENEFITED IN THE LONGRUN FROM THE DIPLOMA ITSELF?(Or do you think I should just take a course?) Twilo Beauty
GO FOR IT! It very true that a degree won't guarantee 100% success in work and money, but at least you walk away with education and knowledge. I felt the exact same way you're feeling now. At 18 I moved to London to study filmaking and script writing. Much to my displeasure, i realized that the art and entertainment industry is not what it's cracked up to be. It's very one sided..if you know the right person- you'll get attention. If you don't then you have to rely on luck or sleeping around. I came back to NYC to complete a business degree- a field that offered me security and money. Good luck...you sound like you're doig real well out there.Sometimes you have focus on business first , in order to make money and eventually do what you want. -iliana

someclown
I think getting a master's can only benefit you in the long run. #1, any extra degree (granted it's just a piece of paper) will give you an advantage in any situation over someone else (save of course for nepotism). #2, you're going to live in Rome for goodness sakes. How enriching and cool is that? Granted, it may not make you a better film maker, but you never know what kind of opportunities may open up in the long run. Good luck.
