JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Ten Palestinians were killed and as many as 20 others were wounded early Friday, according to Palestinian security and hospital sources, after Israeli forces entered the El-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza and destroyed the home of a suspected Palestinian militant.

Israeli tanks leveled the house of Imam Salah Amin Shushaniya, blamed for a series of bomb attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers in Gaza, including an attack on an Israeli tank in March that killed three Israeli soldiers and injured two others, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called the incursion a massacre and said the Palestinians would go the U.N. Security Council to ask for a special session on Israeli operations.

"This Israeli massacre, this Israeli escalation, this terror should be stopped," said Arafat following a meeting with Christian and Muslim clergy in Ramallah. "We are going to go to the Security Council to ask for a special meeting to discuss this issue and to demand an immediate withdrawal.

"It is what's has been declared by them, not by me -- the continuity of the military escalation against our people everywhere here," Arafat said.

Arafat said the incursion was the latest in a string of "massacres" carried out by the Israeli military.

The pre-dawn incursion prompted calls relayed over the local mosque's prayer speakers for Palestinians to resist the Israeli soldiers.

According to the IDF, two gunmen opened fire on Israeli forces as they got near Shushaniya's house and the Israeli forces returned fire.

During the raid, another firefight erupted between the IDF and the Palestinian gunmen.

An Israeli Apache helicopter fired a rocket into a crowd of armed men during the battle, according to the regional Israeli military commander.

Unconfirmed reports from Palestinian sources said that nine people from two families were killed in a house that was shelledli soldiers and injured two others, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Israeli daily newspaper Ha'aretz reported that the IDF's Gaza division commander, Brig. Gen. Yisrael Ziv, said that most of the casualties in the operation were armed terror activists. An IDF investigation, the paper reported, on the incident indicated that five of the casualties were members of Hamas who were targeted by helicopter fire.

A Palestinian woman earlier reported wounded has died, according to hospital sources.

One Israeli soldier was lightly injured, according to the IDF.

Shushaniya was not inside the house at the time of the Israeli raid, according to Israeli sources. The IDF said the specific purpose of the antiterrorism incursion was to destroy Shushaniya's house. Israeli forces completed their mission and pulled out before dawn.
