ARTISTRY Updates / DJ's Wanted

Well, a lot can happen in a week. This past Saturday night, we played at The Bulldog Cafe. The night went over so well, that not only did they ask us to play every Sat night, but Tues and Sunday nights as well. Which brings us to 4 gigs a week!! Saturday nights format will be much like our Friday offering at Nevis(for those who know!) however, Tues & Sunday will be different. Bulldog is not a club, it's a Bar with a very cozy & intimate feel. There is a private area available for any groups or parties.

Tuesday Nights-

ARTISTRY was formed for many reasons. One of which was the lack opportunities for unknown, quality, up&coming DJ's. Every Tuesday night, we will hold mixing competitions. These will be very informal & friendly showcases of local talent open only to DJ's who are NOT residents of any area Clubs or Promotions.

--DJ's will be pre-selected for the competitions by submiting a 30min mix CD or Tape.

--These can be brought to us on any of our nights or mailed directly to us.

--We will contact every DJ that submits a CD or Tape.

--We will be looking for overall mixing ability and technique when choosing the DJ's.

--Currently we will only be accepting DJ's playing House/Trance. In the future, we will feature other formats.

--Each DJ will play a 30 minute set and will be judged on Mixing ability 25%, creativity 25% & crowd response 50%.

--The winner will win a $25 Bar tab and will return the following week to compete as returning Champion.

We are working with Danceatarium who may provide a gift certificate for the winner as well. For anymore information, please email syversin@yahoo.com.

I did something like this in England and it worked out quite well. I'm hoping for the same results here.

We are still deciding on a format for Sunday nights. If you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear 'em. Post a reply or email us directly. OK, here's a recap:

Just a heads up -

If you're ever in the need, or interested, in a downtempo/acid jazz dj, please let me know. That's what I spin. I've been tryin to get my foot in the door, but it seems as if most places are hip to the beat (sorry for the pun cwm1.gif ).

peace and respect

Phrank> Word up; good to see you're spinning acid jazz... that's the mainstay of my vinyl collection (in additon to deep house). Do you like Gilles Peterson? There's a place called Dada in Delray Beach (b/w West Palm Beach and Boca Raton) where the format Friday and Saturday nights is acid-jazzy/ninjatunish/atmosphericdrumnbassish; you may want to check that out...

Big fan of Gilles. And thanks for the info. Kinda hard to find places that spin acid jazz/style music. Muchless hard to find the vinyl period. Do you know of any good vinyl stores or online distributors? I would usually go through X-radio, ubiquity and groove distribution. hard to get any of that here. a lot of music that they "classify" as acid jazz is really jazzed out d&b. you know what i'm sayin?

Phrank> I usually shop at Dancetarium in West Palm Beach, DJ Store in Lauderdale, and Grooveman in SoBe. But it's true that it's hard to find acid jazz due to the abundance of trance/prog/breaks these days. By the way, I just read in the most recent URB magazine that Gilles P had a performance in a theater in LA last month or so; can you imagine that?! What are your favorite labels? Mine are Seasons, Naked, Guidance, Yoshitoshi, Imperial Dub, Talkin Loud, Nuphonic, Grayhound, Siesta, Glasgow U, Paper, and Om.

Well it seems as if we have the same taste. My fav labels are OM, Ninjatune, Mo Wax, Talkin Loud, Yoshitoshi and Imperial Dub.

I've never been by Danceterium. Kind of a drive for me since I live in South Miami. I've gone to the Dj Store, but they didn't have that big of a selection. Grooveman had more D&B in the Acid Jazz section than Acid Jazz itself.

Hey what do you think of DjKrush? I would love to catch a show from him anyday of the week, month or year!

Yeah; Krush would be cool to catch live... when I was last in Paris I just missed him - he was spinning on a boat in the Seine River! Do you have the new Talkin Loud compilation ("Inside the Beat")? what about Nuphonic 03? I found both of these on vinyl a few months ago and feel they're essential...

Hey Phrank

Marlin (1200 Collins) just got a live acid jazz band (The Specialists) on Mondays. It should worth to check out. Also PEOPLE (409 Espanola) has deep, funky and soulful house 7 days a week. A line up of special guest DJ's will be posted soon.

peace
