phrankadelic
Joe Schad> of the Sentinel Staff>> December 28, 2000 10:12 AM EST>> NEW ORLEANS -- That it would come to this seemed inevitable, as packs ofplayers from Florida and Miami made their way toward each other whilesauntering down Bourbon Street late Wednesday evening.>> Almost immediately upon their first interaction of Sugar Bowl week, manyof the players exchanged words, and then shoves. Then one Miami playerdumped a drink on Gators wide receiver Reche Caldwell. About 40 playersscuffled before a New Orleans police car - sirens blazing - raced downBourbon, scattering both visitors and players. A portion of the street wassealed off, but it was to no avail.>> A few minutes and a few blocks later, at about 11:30 p.m. local time, theplayers converged again. Some Hurricanes had words for Florida wide receiverJabar Gaffney, who cursed back and was restrained by teammate Lito Sheppard.Gaffney later searched the street for his missing cell phone, and severalothers scoured the street for missing pieces of jewelry.>> Florida linebacker Andra Davis missed most of the 2000 season followingknee surgery but rushed quickly to Gaffney's defense. He said he didn'tthrow the first punch, but one he did throw took out an unidentified Miamiplayer and fueled an all-out brawl at the corner of Bourbon and Conti, infront of and then inside a pizzeria that also serves mixed drinks.>> Police filed no charges, nor did they file an incident report.>> "The reason for this is two-fold. First, who's the victim? Second, wedon't need the publicity," a police spokesman said.>> By the time police arrived, Florida defensive tackle Gerard Warren wasengaged in fisticuffs with an unidentified player who was not nearly aslarge as his 6-foot-4, 310 pounds. Police forced Warren to his knees andhandcuffed him and the unidentified player. Both were taken to the station afew blocks away on Royal Street. Within a half hour, they were released tothe detaining officer, who placed them in a patrol car and returned them totheir team hotels.>> At the scene, Florida players were seen trying to give officers the cardof a New Orleans police official, who just hours earlier had advised theGators of what clubs and bars to avoid and also encouraged them to avoidaltercations. Several players appeared to sustain minor injuries, includingFlorida linebacker Travis Carroll, whose white shirt was stained with blood.>> An officer at the scene said he couldn't remember a pre-bowl scene as badas this one.>> During the scuffle, Florida defensive end Alex Brown took a punch to theface that left him with a swollen left eye.>> "I wish I knew who did it. I'd kill him," said Brown, standing outside theEighth District police station.>> Copyright © 2000, Orlando Sentinel>> Visit OrlandoSentinel.comWell well well...sounds like the old days!
