> NEW ORLEANS -- That it would come to this seemed inevitable, as packs of

players from Florida and Miami made their way toward each other while

sauntering down Bourbon Street late Wednesday evening.

>

> Almost immediately upon their first interaction of Sugar Bowl week, many

of the players exchanged words, and then shoves. Then one Miami player

dumped a drink on Gators wide receiver Reche Caldwell. About 40 players

scuffled before a New Orleans police car - sirens blazing - raced down

Bourbon, scattering both visitors and players. A portion of the street was

sealed off, but it was to no avail.

>

> A few minutes and a few blocks later, at about 11:30 p.m. local time, the

players converged again. Some Hurricanes had words for Florida wide receiver

Jabar Gaffney, who cursed back and was restrained by teammate Lito Sheppard.

Gaffney later searched the street for his missing cell phone, and several

others scoured the street for missing pieces of jewelry.

>

> Florida linebacker Andra Davis missed most of the 2000 season following

knee surgery but rushed quickly to Gaffney's defense. He said he didn't

throw the first punch, but one he did throw took out an unidentified Miami

player and fueled an all-out brawl at the corner of Bourbon and Conti, in

front of and then inside a pizzeria that also serves mixed drinks.

>

> Police filed no charges, nor did they file an incident report.

>

> "The reason for this is two-fold. First, who's the victim? Second, we

don't need the publicity," a police spokesman said.

>

> By the time police arrived, Florida defensive tackle Gerard Warren was

engaged in fisticuffs with an unidentified player who was not nearly as

large as his 6-foot-4, 310 pounds. Police forced Warren to his knees and

handcuffed him and the unidentified player. Both were taken to the station a

few blocks away on Royal Street. Within a half hour, they were released to

the detaining officer, who placed them in a patrol car and returned them to

their team hotels.

>

> At the scene, Florida players were seen trying to give officers the card

of a New Orleans police official, who just hours earlier had advised the

Gators of what clubs and bars to avoid and also encouraged them to avoid

altercations. Several players appeared to sustain minor injuries, including

Florida linebacker Travis Carroll, whose white shirt was stained with blood.

>

> An officer at the scene said he couldn't remember a pre-bowl scene as bad

as this one.

>

> During the scuffle, Florida defensive end Alex Brown took a punch to the

face that left him with a swollen left eye.

>

> "I wish I knew who did it. I'd kill him," said Brown, standing outside the

Eighth District police station.
