Getting a job in NYC

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what it's like trying to find a reasonable office job in NYC. Im due to graduate from school soon and was just wondering how hard it is trying to find a job. Assuming one has a bachelors and is qualified for the job, what exactly is the market like? Does knowing the right people get you the job? Is the whole post 9-11 economic downward spiral keeping companies from hiring, etc?

The job market in NYC is crap, not to mention everywhere else. It is especially hard to get an office job since so many of these big companies are letting people go. Your best bet is to try an internship or temp work to get your foot in the door and then work it from there. Good luck

It almost always depends on someone you know - sending out resumes and sitting back and waiting won't get you anywhere (and if it does, you are one of the blessed few.) Talk to people and see if they know someone in the business you're looking to get into, cold call places, join a club related to your field if possible. It's all about networking. Good luck!

yes, that is a good point - if you are in a technical field (or not) go to a conference and so some networking. i know trade shows and conferences like that can be expensive but you can do some great networking at them.

thought the job market is definitely not what it was 3 years ago, it is not all that terrible, the biggest factor as was already mentioned is the field that you're trying to get into. the tech and finance fields have been hammered especially hard and are therefore not the best places to look.

however there are opportunities out there, especially in Jersey in the healthcare field. healthcare is responsible for 14% of this countries GDP, which is larger than the automotive industry, and a huge part of it is based in this area.

i've been serious looking for a job for about the last 2.5 months, and am in final interviews for two positions. they are not exactly what i want to be doing, but will offer really solid learning environments and experiences.

when your looking for a job, think about what industries have been doing well recently, and that will give you good starting point in terms of your search.

remember, you can always leave if you're not happy and that it is much easier to find a job when you have one, than when you don't.

If you can't find something in what you studied, check out the insurance industry. There are a lot of entry level job opps for claims reps, underwriters, etc. I do property surveys for a smaller company in midtown, I graduated last May with a waste of an IT degree, and didn't even realize to look into insurance. Don't waste time applying on internet job sites, go directly to company websites or do a search on flipdog which pulls actual real ad's from companies or check the NY Times sundays. good luck.
