GOP Not Anti-Gay Enough, Says Group

Monday, 5 May 2003

WASHINGTON -- The rabidly anti-gay group Concerned Women for America has condemned the chairman of the Republican Party for meeting with representatives of the Human Rights Campaign and for not being more forcefully supportive of embattled Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

In a letter to Republican National Committee Chairman Marc Racicot, the CWA's Sandy Rios said the GOP should not be flirting with what she described as "sexual anarchy."

"Theoretically you may want adulterers and porn addicts to vote for your candidates, but realistically you will be way off course if you allow a sex-driven interest group to set your agenda, thus shutting out pro-family leaders and discouraging pro-family voters," Rios wrote.

The letter also slammed Racicot for meeting with representatives of the HRC last month, though the meeting produced no change in the substance of many anti gay GOP policies. "[R]eaching out to groups that unapologetically define themselves by their aberrant sexual practices will not help build the GOP," Rios wrote.

"Mr. Racicot, you and the leaders of your party have a choice. You can continue to broaden the party with pro-family initiatives that appeal to large Democratic constituencies, or you can try to straddle the line between family values and sexual anarchy."

A spokesperson for the RNC issued a statement that read in part, "Chairman Racicot continues to meet with many groups all across the country to share the president's compassionate conservative agenda and listen."
