Serbian pro-democracy leader, ambassador to Canada, dies at 55

The Associated Press

BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro (May 7, 2003 8:27 p.m. EDT) - Miodrag Perisic, a pro-democracy leader who helped topple Slobodan Milosevic, has died, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday. He was 55.

Perisic, who was Serbia and Montenegro's ambassador to Canada, collapsed after suffering a heart attack in Ottawa late Tuesday while exercising. Efforts to revive him failed, the ministry said.

After Milosevic's overthrow in 2000, Perisic - a member of the Democratic Party led by the late Prime Minster Zoran Djindjic - was appointed the new government's diplomatic envoy to Canada.

In the past two years, Perisic worked to revive relations with Canada that were severed during Milosevic's autocratic reign and the Balkan wars of the 1990s.
