Review of Friday @ Venu, Return to the Edge

This is why god created music on the 8th day. I have honestly been bored with the club scene for a month or two now, since I seem to hear the same tunes wherever I go in Miami, and most of the time I feel people are at the club to be seen and not dance or enjoy the music. Well boys and girls, if you have been feeling the same way, the remedy was Friday night at Venu, for Return to the Edge.

My group of friends and I get to Venu around midnight and see a line to get in that is usually reserved for Space and Crobar. Even though I only had 3 of us on the guest list, the door guy was happy to escort all of us in very quickly to start the madness.

I look around and am amazed at the amount of production that has been added to for this event. Extra speakers, added intelligent lighting with technobeams on stage, and a bigger fogger. The music is on point with DJ FX and Sean Bauzay in the main room. It is only midnight and they are already dropping some sick breaks that has the place dancing like I have never seen in South Florida. Every couple of minutes a circle would form and the b-boys and girls would showcase their skills. As time passed to 1 am, Venu filled up, and the only place that was space with people was the VIP area (that no one really cared about). Everyone was dancing so much, ( not just standing around) it was truly refreshing to see, but did everyone have enough energy left for what was to come?

We decide fuel up and head to the bar for drinks. The night gets better as I order three Red Bull and vodkas and the lovely bartender comps me for them. The anticipation is growing for Jackal and Hyde and the crowd is migrating towards the stage. Then the madness hits, with the opening massive bass line, and the crowd goes wild. Everyone was in awe, fixated on the duo, as they blew the roof off the place. The opening DJ's were smiling ear to ear as they watched the crowd get worked up into a frenzy. There was not a single person sitting down the entire performance, the way it should be. By then end of Jackal and Hyde DJ Monk was getting warmed up. As they played the last night, they started passing out some CD's, vinyl, and posing for pictures with anyone and everyone. I will leave the track ID's to the others like meng.

I could tell the crowd was going to thin now since the main act was completed. DJ Monk started to play but the same energy was lost, at least half the place started to clear out. We stayed for a little while longer and then took off around 3.

It was a pleasure meeting brwneydtrouble and Raincrysobe. Great sets to Fx and Sean. Big thanks to Mike @ Venu and the entire Hallucination Recordings family, is was a great evening.

I just have one question for everyone. Where the hell were you all? Everyone on CP Miami always says they want something different, good music, and live performances. This was your chance. No pretentious bullshit, no fake people, great music, live performance, low cost. The excuse that it was in Ft. Lauderdale, is not and excuse. If you wanted to go to Crobar afterwards you still had plenty of time. You missed a great night.

All the pictures will be up by end of the weekend.

Cheers,

Eric

It was great meeting you to Eric!!

Man I have not danced like that in SUCH a long time. Nor have I seen so many great dancers in one place..the most unlikely people were showcasing some IMPRESSIVE skills.....wish I saw more of that down here in Miami. I unfortunately was a little shy during the best oart of the night, Jackal and Hyde, and didn't ahve the nerve to jump in the ring with the rest of them. Although I did not stop moving for a second! Like Eric said, the vibe, the evergy was totally different than what you see at Space, Crobar, Maze and everywhere else in Miami. People go to see and be seen, very few are like us that really go for the music. This group was there to DANCE. I wish this could become a regular event, nothing moves like a bad ass breakbeat. :D

Now I KNOW that a lot of you would have enjoyed yourselves there, and really have lame excuses for not going.....after we finished up at VeNu, we headed to the beach to support Edgar...an awesome ending to an awesome night.

Well looks like i will have to eat my words that it would fail, however i didn't know they brought in extra equipment, cause thats why i said it would fail, so i'm glad it worked out...I was gonna go, but with my full week of work under my belt i was too tired.. But i think you guys learned what S&G learned a while back, in lauderdale you can do what ever you want and no one will look at it like in that sobe miami way. YOu have freedom in lauderdale that you can never have in miami or sobe. In lauderdale you won't have people bitching about anything, its just a great time and people drop all the club bs and they get drunk and dance and fuck...

thus why S&G only does lauderdale...

good job guys, glad to see S&G, Sean Rudnick and Garfeild have some more partners in the club biz in lauderdale...

What can I say about this party that hasn't been said already? We arrive at around 10:30 and the place was DEAD. Merlyn started his set and throughout his hour set people started to slowly pack the place. By the time me and FX hit the decks the crowd was jamming. It was so much fun to see everyone getting down to the breakbeats. We started our set with some new school breaks and finished it off with some old school breaks such as the Electroliners' "Loose Caboose", Uberzone's "Botz", and Trip Theory's, "Time's Up". We had to throw in some of those old school tracks that we used to hear at The Edge back in the mid-nineties.

At 1:30 Jackal and Hyde kicked off their set with their nasty "electro-core" sound. Their first track was "This is the Sound of the Underground". That's the one that goes, "Miami is the home of the motherfucking bass!!". Man that song rocks!! They played relentlessly for about an hour as the crowd was just exploding with energy. Jackie was going off even though she stayed away from the hard core b-boys and girls that were in the center of the dancefloor. ;)

Monk came on after but unfortunately the crowd wasn't feeling his first hard house tracks. He picked it up a bit with some breaks that were bad-ass but people started leaving at around 3 or 3:30.

Overall I think this party was a huge success. There will be more parties like this coming soon to the same venue. We'll keep you posted.

CP, you missed out on this one!!! At least I was able to kidnap Jackie so she can experience the event. I don't know how the hell I ended up at Crobar after all that madness but we did catch the end of Edgar's set which included a bad-ass breakbeat mix!

Big thanks to koky for driving my car back from the beach. I wasn't that drunk but I was extremely drained from all the driving and partying.

Now I have to switch from the banging breaks I was spinning last night to an opening house set for Eddie G tonight at Maze. See you guys at Maze tonight. :)

Just a quick note to thank everyone for coming out and making my first Ft. Lauderdale party a blast. All the DJ's that came out and showed me some love the first time through.....respect. To everyone else that came out and had I good time.....thank you too. I am glad to hear that everyone was feeling the vibe and enjoyed the night.

I am also glad to hear that there's a crew in S. FL that is not afraid to check there heads at the door and get on the dance floor and get loose. Thats the reason I go through all the motions. It was really rewarding to see everyone having fun.

Stay tuned for more parties in the same vain coming very soon........Next Friday........Wendel & Stryke.....August 8......Merlyn / Andy Hughes & Kimball Collins.........and I cant wait to line up another performance with Sean & FX......(two great guys aside from kicking much ass on the decks).

Again, I really appreciate all the love and support from everyone that came out. Please continue to come out and have a good time and support the return of the late night to Laudy......wouldn't it be great to have 2,500 in that room every Friday with that same vibe? You can always count on us to keep it simple and focus on the basics.....great music, no hassles, great vibe, stiff drinks........

Once again......FUCK VIP.......and I hope to see everyone at the club again soon. If there is anything anyone would like to see added to the nights, holla.

Respect to the fullest,

Mike Feinberg

To a Nation Rockin'!!!

Fucking love that track!!!

Brings me back to fond memories of DJ Dan, fer sure!!!

What a trip playin' all those old records out in a place and on a night like that!!!

We tried to squeeze MotherEarth in there but it wasn't workin' out.

A cool moment was when Exzakt and Todd (Hyde) came up to me with a CD in hand beggin' me to play it.

I had my track all lined up and ready to go with a bit of time to spare so I cued up the CD and got it lined up and sure enough through it in a couple minutes after they handed it to me and the place went berzerk! It was a new track that Exzakt has bbeeen working on with Jackal and Hyde and it was boomin'!!!

Atomic Age sounded great too, Sean!!!! I liked hearing that one out on the floor!!!

The party was outstanding! Jackal and Hyde put enough bass in me to last a month! Man they jammed!

I'm not playing this week but something is in the works for a weekly party there on Fridays in which FX and I will probably be participating in (as well as other locals and special headliners). Stay tuned. ;)

You're totally right. Miami's scene is getting weak.

Everyone makes fun of Ft. Lauderdale, but lately Ft. Lauderdale has been kicking Miami's ass! I remember when I first moved here in 94 I used to go to the Edge every Saturday, because i knew I would never be dissappointed with the music, or the rolls for that matter, plus we would go to Viper, Trio's, the Theatre, and Roxy. Granted they are all new names now, but they all still kick ass. Now, in south beach the hottest clubs suck. Level you can get shot at now because of that hip hop shit. Opium is ok, Crobar is slowing down(but is still good), Space 34 is the best thing down there, Maze sucks (they ruined that club). The only reason why people used to go to that club was because it was so opened and big. Why should we have to walk all the way from the dance floor to upstairs just to go to the bathroom (or in club terms do a bump)? I just hope season really kicks ass this year, or a lot of really important people won't be living here anymore.
