By-wire throttle and shift controls?!

Recommended Posts

here is the "by-wire" transmission that will be used in the Euro-spec Toyota Prius (taken from toyota.co.uk):

Other technical advances featured in the new Prius include a push-button ignition and by-wire, braking, throttle and transmission contol (i.e. there is no mechanical linkage, as in "fly-by-wire" on aircraft). The by-wire gearshift system means Toyota has been able to dispense with the traditional floor-mounted gear level and replace it with a dashmounted joystick which requires just a tap of the finger to operate and frees up space inside the car.

:what:

there was an electric car i saw on tv the other day. it had no engine the front was completely empty and tinted so you could see all of the road. the steering wheel did everything, no pedals, the "wheel" looked like a space ship control or somehting, to vertical hand gripes. it had about 15 degrees range of motion to turn to the left or right no mater what speed you were going you.

to accelerate you twisted the right hand gripe, like a motorcycle and to brake you squeezed it. they said if you were a white knuckle driver you wouldnt go anywhere, you'd constantly be on the brakes. :)
