DEA: 10 Nightclubs, Strip Clubs Busted

POSTED: 12:54 p.m. EDT August 18, 2003

UPDATED: 1:12 p.m. EDT August 18, 2003

MIAMI -- Sixteen people from nine different South Florida nightclubs and strip clubs accused of selling Ecstasy to undercover Broward County Sheriff's deputies and Drug Enforcement Administration agents appeared in court today.

"Our guys, BSO and DEA, walked in cold and were buying drugs off an awful lot of people almost immediately, and were doing so for a month straight," said Joe Kilmer (pictured) of the DEA.

Investigators say they bought as many as 1,000 pills at a time. Arrests were made at the following clubs:

Club Space

The Forum

Port Hole Pub

The Cheetah

The Body Shop

Synn City

Bada Bing

Ebar

Coliseum

Gold Rush

"The nature of the club really has nothing to do with this investigation. This was a drug case -- this was a drug investigation that was based on information that drug dealing was going on ... so it had nothing to do with the kind of club. If we had information that drug dealing was going on in doughnut shops or gas stations, you know we'd be visiting those places too," said BSO's Jim Leljedal.

Some of those arrested are expected to bond out today.

17 Arrested In Weekend Raids

FORT LAUDERDALE -- More than a dozen people are facing drug charges today in Fort Lauderdale after police raided nine nightclubs over the weekend.

The U-S Drug Enforcement Agency, along with the Broward Sheriff's Office and Miami law enforcement, conducted the Ecstasy sting at nightclubes in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties.

Undercover agents made deals for the popular club drug with the suspects. Several of the defendants are in their early 20s, and they told a federal judge this morning that they could not afford an attorney. U-S Magistrate Judge Lurana Snow appointed federal public defenders for everyone.

Bail for most of them was set at 50-thousand dollars or more.

Police say the raids have had a temporary impact on Ecstasy users and sellers.

D-E-A spokesman Jim Kilmer says -- quote -- "Toilets are flushing all over the place." (AP)

DEA, police charge 17 in drug raids

About a dozen people appeared in federal court in Fort Lauderdale Monday morning, each indicted on at least one count relating to the sale or possession of the club drug Ecstasy.

They were among the 17 arrests made over the weekend on raids at nine nightclubs in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. The investigation and sting operation brought together undercover agents working for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, Broward Sheriff's Office deputies, and Miami law enforcement.

According to Joe Kilmer, DEA spokesman, agents with the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco worked with law enforcement to close down the bars at theestablishments after undercover agents made drug deals with suspects on the club's premises.

Clubs raided included Bada Bing, Synn City, and Cheetah in Pompano Beach, the Forum and the Porthole Pub in Pompano Beach, E Bar in Fort Lauderdale, the Coliseum in Hollwood, Club Space and Gold Rush in Miami. The owners of the businesses are not linked to the people arrested.

''These places are just where some of the sellers and buyers met,'' Kilmer said. ''There's no relation to the businesses themselves. We are not making that connection.'' The defendants -- several of whom are in their early 20s -- told U.S. Magistrate Judge Lurana S. Snow that they could not afford an attorney. She appointed federal public defenders for everyone. The bail for most of the defendants was set at $50,000 or more.

Kilmer said a few were selling as many as 1,000 tabs of Ecstasy at a time.

Although the DEA has been investigating Club Space and Gold Rush in Miami for more than a year, Kilmer said the agency and BSO began interviewing Broward informants for Palm Beach and Broward clubs about a month ago.

The raids have had an impact on some Ecstasy users and sellers, at least for the time being, Kilmer said.

''Toilets are flushing all over the place,'' he said.
