Right-winger Augusto Pinochet marches his military into Santiago, Chile and overthrows the popularly elected government of Socialist leader Salvador Allende. All with backing from the American CIA. Allende had been told to leave the capital, but he refused in order to fulfill his orders as president. Allende ends up comitting suicide (or so the official story says) on the day of the coup.
