OCCUPIED JERUSALEM - Israel on Sunday said its warplanes attacked a "training camp" allegedly belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance group inside Syrian territory.

An Israeli army spokesman said fighter jets bombed a training camp at Ein al Saheb on the Syrian-Lebanese borders Saturday night.

The spokesman gave no details but claimed the target was a training camp used by the Islamic Jihad group.

"All I can say that IAF fighter jets bombed the Ein Saheb base, a safe haven and training camp for the Islamic Jihad terrorists," said the spokesman.

Syrian sources acknowledged the aerial attack, saying it targeted a Palestinian refugee camp.

Accusing Israel of playing with fire, a Syrian spokesman denied the existence of any Palestinian training camps inside Syria.

There have been no details as to casualties or damage resulting from the bombing.

The Israeli air attack against Syria is the first of its kind in more than twenty years and constitutes a breach of the American-brokered disengagement agreement between Syria and Israel of 1974.

Israel accuses Syria of supporting and abetting Palestinian resistance groups, particularly Hamas and the Islamic Jihad. However, there has been reasonable evidence corroborating Israeli claims to that effects.

Syria hosts as many as 350,000 Palestinian refugees who were expelled from their ancestral homeland in 1948.
