You were apparently lucky enough to get a gig wherever you were DJing, and didn't have the stuff to keep your job, whether it's because you don't "bring the people" or because you don't "play their music" or whatever reason it is. If you want to be a DJ apparently there are ropes that have to be jumped(as with any job), and apparently you're not willing to jump them (= no promotion at work).
