SUBWAYS TO MOVE RAIL FAST

By CLEMENTE LISI

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December 29, 2003 -- Straphangers will be in for an easier and faster commute starting Feb. 22 after all four tracks on the Manhattan Bridge open for the first time since 1986.

The Transit Authority's revamping of the subway map comes as the city ends its massive rehabilitation of the span, officials said.

The changes will directly affect riders who rely on the N, B, D, W, Q and Q-diamond trains, and will also bring back service between Brooklyn and Grand Street in Chinatown.

Included in the plan are the following changes:

* The N train from Gravesend will again run express through Brooklyn, then local in Manhattan and out to Astoria, Queens, using the Broadway line.

* The B train will replace the Q-diamond and run express from Brighton Beach on the Brighton line and continue to run express along Sixth Avenue to Columbus Circle, then run local uptown to The Bronx.

* The Q train will continue to provide local service along the Brighton line and then run express along Broadway to 57th Street.

* The D train will be replacing the W in Brooklyn, and will be the only line serving Stillwell Avenue until that station is completely reopened next summer. It will operate as an express train through Brooklyn and run up Sixth Avenue, continuing as an express to The Bronx.

* The W will run from Whitehall Street in Manhattan as a local along the Broadway line and end in Astoria, Queens.

* The Q-diamond will no longer run.

* Grand Street will be served by the B and D trains, and the shuttle will be discontinued.
